芝湖 李選의 삶과 詩세계 (The Life and Poetry World of Jiho Lee Seon)

초록

이 논문은 17세기 말 기호 사림의 중심에서 활동하던 芝湖 李選(1632~1692)의 삶과 사유가 담긴 詩를 중심으로 문학적 표출양상을 살펴본 것이다. 이선이 활발한 정치 활동을 할 수 있었던 배경에는 그의 가문뿐만 아니라 사승 관계에 있던 스승의 영향과 종신토록 정치적 궤를 함께하여 제자의 의리를 지킨 이선의 삶이 자리잡고 있다. 그는 성정에 뿌리를 두고 화려한 수식 없이 평이한 문체로 진정성을 담은 문학에 가치를 두었다.
이선이 시세계를 통해 보여준 문학적 성취는 다정다감한 所懷를 진솔하게 표출한 부친에 대한 그리움과 헤어짐을 소재로 한 이별시, 만시는 수식보다 절제한 감정을 응축하여 시에 담아 표현하였다.
또 자식들에게 남긴 훈계의 글 <訓子要語>에서 立志를 공고히 하여 절의를 중시한 역사의식을 고취하였으며 의리와 충렬의 행적이 높은 인물들을 존숭하며 훗날 자신의 정치 활동에 본보기로 삼아 이들의 절의관을 시로 남겼다. 한편 만년에 유배지에서 쓴 시에는 삶의 悔恨과 自警의 獨白으로 내면의 심정을 담담하게 고백하는 자기반성의 태도가 관찰되었다.
시에 드러나는 이선은 당대의 정쟁에 몰두한 인물이 아니라 인간적 소회와 감정을 솔직하게 표현할 줄 아는 인물이었다. <松江歌辭>의 발문을 통해 문학을 대하는 이선의 생각은 성정에 뿌리를 두고 화려한 수식 없이 평이한 문체로 진정성을 담은 문학에 가치를 부여하고 있음이 드러난다. 그러한 자만이 사람 됨됨이를 알 수 있고 진실의 경지에 이를 수 있다는 주장이다. 또 한글 가사에도 관심을 보였으며 이는 진정성을 담보로 그 진심이 사람들에게 오롯이 전달되어야 함을 중요하게 여긴 그의 문학적 사유를 짐작하게 한다.
그의 시는 당대의 성리학적 사유나 문학적 수식의 측면에서 특별한 성취를 논하기는 어려우나, 평이한 표현으로 전달력을 높이고 진정성을 추구하여 공자의 ‘詩言志’와 ‘文質彬彬’ 의 정신을 충실히 실천하였다고 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

Jiho Lee Seon (1632~1692) was a figure who was active in politics among the literati in the late 17th century. As a descendant of Prince Guangping, he formed a wide network of relationships through marriage with prominent families of the time, and absorbed the teachings and political ideologies of his father, Lee Houyuan (1598~1660), who was a respected scholar-official and a central figure in the literary society. This study aims to approach Lee Seon from a literary perspective, examining the literary expression of his life and thoughts through his poetry. With a focus on his collection of poems, "Jihozip(芝湖集)," which contains 148 poems on various themes, we analyzed his life and family background, the affectionate and sensitive expressions of his thoughts and feelings, his historical consciousness that emphasized principles and ethics, and his confessions of regret and self-reflection.
Lee Seon's background as a member of a prominent family and his relationship with his mentor were important factors in enabling him to be actively involved in politics. He deeply respected his mentor, Song Siyeol, and remained loyal to him by submitting multiple petitions when Song was exiled, and even resigned from his position to protest against the mistreatment of his mentor. He also valued the concept of loyalty among friends, requesting that he also be punished if his mentor and friends were punished unjustly.
In his poetry, Lee Seon's literary achievement is characterized by his affectionate and sensitive expressions of nostalgia for his ancestors in poems such as "elegy(挽詩)," which deals with eternal separation and longing. Furthermore, his writings on education for his children in "Xunzi Yaoyu" reveal his historical consciousness, emphasizing respect for individuals with high moral character, and providing himself as an example for his children to emulate in their own political endeavors.
His confessions of regret and self-reflection in his poetry reveal his sincere introspection and self-examination, which is the hallmark of his poetry. Through this type of poetry, he candidly expresses his emotions and reflects on his own shortcomings and the futility of worldly affairs, reminiscent of the psalms written in the Book of Psalms. In other words, he speaks frankly, confessing his regrets about his life, and in doing so, demonstrates a sincere and honest attitude toward self-reflection.
it can be evaluated that he faithfully practiced Confucius' spirit of "poetry" and "literary" by enhancing the delivery power and pursuing sincerity with plain expression.
