초록

본 논문은 쿠자누스의 작품 중에서『정신론』(Idiota de mente)의 ‘살아있는정신(mens viva)’의 개념을 은유를 통해서 살펴본다. 이 작품에서 쿠자누스는인간의 정신을 신과 세계를 매개하는 자율적이고 창조적인 실체로 서술한다. 인간 정신은 실재 사물을 창조하는 신적 정신의 모상인 동시에, 사물들의 원상으로서 사물들을 개념적으로 함유한다. 인간 정신은 인공적이고 기술적이며 수학적인 대상들을 자립적으로 형성함으로서 신의 창조적인 자유를 내적으로 품고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 인간 정신에 대한 쿠자누스의 표상은살아있는 상으로서 다양한 고찰 관점을 허용한다. 이러한 이유로 쿠자누스는 정신론에서 다양한 은유를 통해 살아있는 정신의 본질을 풍부하게 설명한다. 살아있는 정신은 자신을 다른 모든 것의 원상으로 만듦으로써 자신을 찾고 인식한다. 이러한 인식은 자신의 원상인 절대 정신과 끊임없이 닮으려는 무한한 움직임이다. 알려지지 않은 왕을 그린 초상화는 인간 정신으로서, 이 초상화를 보고 그린 나머지 초상화들인 사물들은 이 첫 번째 초상화의 모상들이다. 이로써 정신은 그 자체로 신의 모상이지만 사물들은 정신을통해서만 신의 모상임이 강조된다. 반면에 살아있는 그림과 죽은 그림이라는 두 가지 자화상을 그리는 화가의 예는 화가인 신적 정신이 자신의 살아있는 초상화로서 인간 정신을 만들고, 이 초상화가 스스로 자신을 완성시켜나감으로써 끊임없이 신과 닮아감을 강조한다. 그리고 다른 은유로서 사문화되지 않고 살아있는 성문법에는 규정되고 해석되는 실제의 법 사례들이 현재한다. 마찬가지로 정신의 법 안에는 실재의 무한한 다양성이 잠재적으로 내포되어 있다. 동시에 정신은 이 성문법의 해석자로서 자신의 천부적인판단력으로 이 법을 모든 것에 생생하게 적용한다. 더 나아가서 살아있는 정신의 의미는 단순히 자연을 모방하는 것을 넘어서 신의 기술에 버금가는 인간의 고유한 관념을 실현시키는 인공물인 숟가락 공예의 은유에서 절정에달한다. 숟가락 자체의 범형적 형상(paradeigma)을 모방해서 만드는 숟가락은 결코 이 형상 자체에 도달하지 못한다. 아울러 숟가락의 표면은 거울과같은 역할을 함으로써 숟가락과 그 표면은 각각 육체와 영혼의 자립성과 의존성을 나타낸다. 이러한 다양한 은유를 통해서 쿠자누스는 살아있는 정신을 고정된 개념 속에 집어넣는 순간 그 참된 특성은 빛을 잃어버리게 된다는 것을 강조한다. 근본적으로 신적 정신으로서 무한한 정신이 어디에나 확산되고 스며들고 작용하는 모든 실재의 원천으로서 풍요로운 내용을 지니며, 인간 정신은 그 모상이기 때문이다. 따라서 신적 정신의 살아있는 모상으로서 인간 정신은 항상 최종적으로 파악될 수 없는 신을 파악하려는 시도를 통해 자기 자신을 이해한다. 이러한 신적 정신의 살아있는 상으로서 인간정신의 면모를 다양한 방식의 은유를 통해서 끊임없이 ‘추정(coniectura)’하는것이 쿠자누스에게는 가장 적합하게 정신을 이해하는 방식이다. 살아있는정신의 추정적 인식은 다양한 경험적 형상들에서 자신을 상실하는 것이 아니라, 인간의 정신 능력의 고유한 역동성에 의해 조정되면서 선험적으로 남아있다. 이렇듯 최종적으로 신의 모상으로서 살아있는 정신이 자신의 원상인 신에게 다가가고 접근할 수 있는 것은 신적 정신과 인간 정신 간의 역동적 관계에 근거한다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the concept of ‘living mind(mens viva)’ in Idiota de mente among the works of Cusa through metaphor. In this work, Cusa describes the human mind as an autonomous and creative entity that mediates between God and the world. The human mind is the image of the divine mind that creates real things, and at the same time contains things conceptually as their original form. The human mind internally embraces the creative freedom of God by independently forming artificial, technological, and mathematical objects. Therefore, Cusa’s representation of the human mind allows various viewpoints of consideration as a living image. For this reason, Cusa abundantly explains the nature of the living mind through various metaphors in Idiota de mente. The living mind seeks and recognizes itself by making itself the exemplar of all others. This recognition is an infinite movement to constantly resemble one's exemplar, the absolute mind. The portrait of the unknown king is a human mind, and the rest of the portraits, the objects, are images of this first portrait. This emphasizes that the mind itself is the image of God, but objects are the image of God only through the mind. On the other hand, the example of a painter who paints two self-portraits, a living picture and a dead picture, emphasizes that the divine mind, the painter, creates a human mind as a living portrait of himself, and that the portrait continues to resemble God as it completes itself. And, as another metaphor, actual legal cases that are defined and interpreted are present in the living written law without being dead letter. Similarly, in the laws of the mind the infinite variety of reality is potentially implied. At the same time, as the interpreter of this written law, the mind vividly applies this law to everything with its natural judgment. Furthermore, the meaning of a living mind reaches its climax in the metaphor of spoon craft, an artifact that goes beyond simply imitating nature and realizes the unique concept of humans comparable to God’s technology. Nevertheless, the spoon made by imitating the paradigma of the spoon itself never reaches this form itself. In addition, the spoon and its surface represent the independence and dependence of the body and soul, respectively, by playing a role like a mirror. Through these various metaphors, Cusanus emphasizes that the moment a living spirit is put into a fixed concept, its true character loses its light. This is because, as a fundamentally divine mind, the infinite spirit has rich content as the source of all reality that spreads, permeates, and acts everywhere, and the human mind is its image. Thus, as a living image of the divine mind, the human mind always comprehends itself by attempting to grasp the finally incomprehensible God. As a living image of such a divine mind, constantly ‘estimating(coniectura)’ the aspect of the human mind through various metaphors is the most suitable way to understand the mind for Cusa. The estimated cognition of the living mind does not lose itself in a variety of empirical forms, but remains a priori conditioned by the dynamics inherent in human mental capacity. In this way, it is based on the dynamic relationship between the divine mind and the human mind that the living mind as the image of God can finally approach and assimilate God, its exemplar.
