초록

The tale of Samshin Grandmother is a legend and myth passed down to the Korean people through Gut ceremonies, or shaman rituals by shamans. Myths convey the wisdom of life people have acquired while dealing with hardships, and cultivating a history of their own. The life ‘context’ [life－world] that formed the ‘text’ of Samshin Grandmother, and passed it down was the very basis of everyday life for the people that continuously faced hard times. In a patriarchal society, the grandmother survived amidst being a woman, and having to adjust to the married life and the in－laws. This grandmother holds in herself the wisdom of life of the resilient people. Basically, the grandmother represents the wisdom of survival and grammar of life. We will call these two notions, as the reason of the life－world, the ‘reason of salimsari[vivification].’ We will examine the various dimensions of significance that Samshin Grandmother indicates in this thesis. Next, we will briefly look into the legend of Samshin Grandmother handed down through oral tradition, taking the form of epic warrior songs and Gut ceremonies. In doing so, we will attempt to fathom the meaning of the group unconsciousness implied in the myth. Later on, we will epitomize the uniqueness of the myth of Samshin Grandmother, and point out noteworthy factors of the reason of vivification within. We will compare this to the Western concept of reason, and check over the distinct structural dimensions of the reason of vivification.
The reason the globalized age needs at this moment is not the reason of the survival of the fittest where only the strong and superior wins. What this age needs is a symbiotic reason, every being in the world living and letting live in harmony. We will be able to find the clues to that in the reason of vivification within the tale of Samshin Grandmother.
