초록

본고는 1907년 미국 남장로교회 선교사로 전주에 파견된 Miss Nellie B. Rankin(羅恩希: 1879-1911)이 고향의 가족 및 친구들에게 보낸 편지를 분석하여, 조선을 지극히 사랑하였던 여선교사의 전주 정착과 이후 선교사로서 조선에서의 삶을 미시사·생활사의 관점에서 살펴 본 것이다.
랭킨은 조지아주 Savannah의 Independent Presbyterian Church 장로의 딸로 태어나 Agnes Scott 대학을 졸업한 기독교 가문 출신의 선교사였다. 그러나 그녀의 부모는 딸의 조선 선교사 파견을 강력히 반대하였는데, 이는 중산층의 삶을 추구했던 그녀의 부모가 딸이 선교사로서 살기를 바라지 않은데다가, 당시 조선은 미국인들에게 청일·러일전쟁을 겪은 매우 위험한 지역으로 인식되고 있었기 때문이었다.
부모의 반대를 극복하고 1907년 2월 13일 전주에 도착한 랭킨은 성곽도시 전주의 역사적 배경과 함께 아름다운 자연에 매료되어 전원생활을 즐기면서 조선에 빠르게 적응하였다. 도착 한 지 1주일 후부터 시작된 조선어 공부 역시 어려운 문법과 존대어·평어·하대어의 구분으로 쉽지 않았으나, 그녀의 교육선교에의 열망은 다른 선교사에 비해 빠른 속도로 조선어를 습득하도록 한 동력이 되었다. 28살에 조선에 온 Miss 랭킨은 30살을 넘기면서 스스로 ‘노처녀’임을 인정하며, 당시 조선에 온 선교사의 2/3가 여성선교사인 상황에서 미혼인 여선교사들의 결혼이 쉽지 않은 현실을 슬퍼하는 내면세계를 어머니와 남동생 Will에게 토로하기도 한다.
랭킨은 전주의 여성교육과 전도에 헌신하면서 교육선교사로서 정체성을 확립해나간다. 그녀는 여성교육에의 강한 열망으로 1910년 기전여학교에 서양식 교사(校舍)를 신축하고 고등과정을 개설하여 전주 여성교육의 기반을 마련하였다. 이외에 랭킨은 주로 여성과 어린이를 대상으로 한 성경학교나 농촌교회여성 강좌, 초급반 주일학교를 운영하며 전도활동에도 힘을 기울였다. 특히 기독교 신자가 아닌 가정의 어린 부랑아를 대상으로 주일학교를 개설하여 불신자(不信者)를 대상으로 선교의 영역을 넓히고 선도하였다.
랭킨은 4년 6개월(1907.2.13.-1911.8.13.) 동안 재조선 선교사로 사역하면서 조선이 일제로부터 국권을 침탈당하는 과정을 현지에서 직접 목도하였다. 랭킨은 고종 강제퇴위와 궁궐 유폐 등 일제의 만행을 놀라울 정도로 정확히 파악하고 있었으며, 일본을 지구상에서 가장 ‘파렴치한 민족’이라고 비난하였다. 나아가 그는 미국의 가족·친구들에게 왜곡 전달된 조선의 사정이나 일본과의 관계를 상세히 설명하여 수정할 정도로 조선을 사랑했던 지한파(知韓派) 지식인으로 정치의식이 성장하였다. 조선에 선교사로 온 것을 단 한 번도 후회해 본적이 없을 만큼 조선을 사랑하고 교육선교사로서 여성교육과 선교에 혼신을 다한 그녀의 삶과 이상이 한국 선교사에서 의미 있게 기억되기를 희망한다.

영어초록

This paper examined educational mission activities of Miss Nellie B. Rankin who was sent to Jeonju as a female missionary of Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1907 and loved the Joseon Dynasty very much and her life in the Joseon Dynasty from the micro-historical viewpoint based on her letters to her families and friends in her hometown.
Rankin was born a daughter of an elder of Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Georgia. She was from the Christianity family and graduated from Agnes Scott College. However, her parents strictly opposed her dispatch of missionary to the Joseon Dynasty because they thought it was the non-civilized backward nation and was very dangerous after the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War Rankin who arrived at Jeonju on February 13, 1970 after overcoming parental disapproval enjoyed country life and adapted herself to the Joseon Dynasty quickly being fascinated by historical background of Jeonju, the walled city and the beautiful nature. She started studying Korean from the day after her arrival. She had difficulties in difficult grammar and classifying words into terms of respect and normal words. Her desire for educational mission became a force for learning Korean more quickly than other missionaries. Miss Rankin who had visited Korea when she was 28 years old admitted that she was 'a maiden lady' when she was 30 years old. She expressed her feelings about her inner world to her mother and Will, her younger brother. She was sad about the reality that it was difficult for female single missionaries to get married in the situation that 2/3 of the missionaries who visited Korea was the women.
However, Rankin established her identity as the educational missionary devoting herself to the education and mission of women in Jeonju. Her strong desire for the education of women was realized by establishing a new Western school building (校舍) and opening an advanced course in Jeonju Gigeon School for Girls(紀全女學校) in 1910. In addition, she focused on evangelical preaching by establishing 'Sunday School for Girls' for girls in the families that were not Christians.
Rankin directly witnessed the process that Japan dispossed the Joseon Dynasty of the sovereignty of the nation carrying out the ministry as the missionary in Korea from 1907 to 1911. Rankin surprisingly and exactly understood brutality of the Japanese Empire including the fact that Imperial Japan forced Emperor Gojong to abdicate the throne and he was confined in a palace. And she criticized Japan saying that it is the most shameless race on the earth. Furthermore, she grew as the intellectual of the pro-Korean group (知韓派) who loved the Joseon Dynasty as she explained the Joseon Dynasty's situations that were distorted and delivered to the world and its relationship with Japan to her families and friends in U.S. and her political awareness also did. The researcher hopes people will remember that her life and spirit to love the Joseon Dynasty as she never regretted visiting Korea as the missionary and do her best to educating women and go on missions to them as the educational missionary are meaningful.
