초록

이 글은 노산(鷺山) 이은상(李殷相, 1903~1982)의 시조론과 고시조 선별기획물 <時調노리>(1936)의 특성을 살펴 그의 연구 지향을 드러내 보는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 이은상의 시조론과 고시조 선별기획이 오늘날 시조 연구의 토대가 되고 있음을 밝혔다.
이은상의 시조 연구 방법론은 몇 가지 핵심 지표에 따라 정리된다. 첫째, 시조의 역사적 가치는 세계문학의 보편성으로부터 확보된다. 둘째, 고시조 연구의 의미는 문헌 발굴과 폭넓은 작품을 대중과 공유하는 데서 찾을 수 있다. 셋째, 시조 형식은 ‘定形而非定形’으로 신축 유동적 성격을 지닌다. 마지막으로 시조의 생명은 자기 생활체험을 조선어로 구현하고, 조선 민족과 국토의 정신을 내면화함으로써 획득된다. 이렇듯 이은상은 시조를 옛 유산이 아닌 살아 숨 쉬는 현재의 문학으로 정립하고자 했다. 그런 의미에서 이은상의 시조론은 전통 복원의 차원에서 전개된 것이 아니라 향후 시조로 도달해야 할 조선 문학의 실현에 놓여있었다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 이은상의 시조 연구 방법과 시조관은 고시조 선별 작업에도 영향을 미쳤다. 그 결과가 바로 대중놀이형 고시조 앤솔로지 <時調노리>다. 이 기획물은 시조 보급과 대중화에 근간을 두고 만들어졌다. 또한, 시조로 조선 문학의 중심을 세우고자 했던 이은상의 의도 또한 강하게 반영되어 있다. 이은상은 역사적으로 가치 있고 연대별로 대표되는 유명씨 작품을 선별하여 시조가 오랜 전통을 지닌 전 민족의 노래였음을 알리고자 했다. 아울러 여성 창작 시조를 대폭 수록하여 우리말 시조의 탁월한 미감을 추구했다. 나아가 세상에 알려지지 않은 작품을 선별함으로써 고시조에 관한 보다 다양하고 올바른 정보를 전달했다. 이은상의 방대한 연구 성과와 시조 시인으로서의 역량이 <시조노리>를 꿰뚫고 있는 것이다.
<시조노리>는 해방 후에도 거듭 발매되며 대중에게 널리 인기를 끌었다. 게다가 이은상이 <시조노리>에 선별한 작품은 조윤제의 『朝鮮詩歌史綱』(1937, 東光堂)에 배치된 것들과 크게 다르지 않다. 그런 점에서 이은상의 시조 연구 방법론과 <시조노리>는 오늘날의 시조 문학사에도 다대한 영향을 미치고 있다. 우리는 이은상의 시조론과 고시조 선별작업을 탐독함으로써 시조 비평의 시각과 계승의 가치를 찾을 수 있는 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to reveal the orientation of Lee Eun-sang's research by examining the characteristics of his Sijo theory and selecting project <Sijo-nori時調노리>(1936). Through these considerations, it was revealed that Lee Eun-sang's Sijo theory and the plan of selecting Gosijo were the basis for today's Sijo research.
Lee Eun-sang's research methodology of Sijo is summarized according to several key indicators. First, the historical value of Sijo is secured from the universality of world literature. Second, the meaning of Gosijo study can be found in discovering literature and sharing a wide range of works with the public. Third, the form of Sijo shows ‘定形而非定形’ which has a flexible characteristic of new construction. Finally, the life of the Sijo is acquired by embodying one’s own life experience in Korean and internalizing the spirit of the Joseon people and the national territory. As such, Lee Eun-sang tried to establish Sijo as a living and breathing present literature, not an old heritage. In that sense, it can be said that Lee Eun-sang’s theory of Sijo was not developed in terms of traditional restoration, but was on the realization of Joseon literature, which should be reached as Sijo in the future.
Lee Eun-sang's research method about Sijo and the view of Sijo also influenced the selecting work of the Gosijo. The result was the public play type GosiJo Anthology <Sijonori>. This project was created based on the dissemination and popularization of Sijo. In addition, Lee Eun-sang's intention to establish the center of Joseon literature through Sijo was strongly reflected. Lee Eun-sang tried to inform that Sijo was a song for the whole nation with a long tradition by selecting works of famous people that were historically valuable and represented chronologically. Also, Lee Eun-sang pursued the outstanding aesthetics of Sijo written in Korean by significantly including the women's creative Sijo. Furthermore, by selecting unknown works of the world, He delivered more diverse and correct information about Gosijo. Lee Eun-sang's vast research achievements and competence as the Sijo author are penetrating <Sijonori>.
<Sijonori> was released repeatedly even after liberation and became widely popular with the public. The Sijo in <Sijonori> are not much different from those placed in Cho Yoon-je's 『朝鮮詩歌史綱』(1937, 東光堂). In this regard, Lee Eun-sang's methodology for researching Sijo and <Sijonori> have a great influence on today's history of literature. We can find the perspective of the criticism of the Sijo and the value of succession by reading Lee Eun-sang's theory of Sijo and the selecting project of Gosijo.
