초록

이 논문은 병자호란 당시 南漢山城에 고립된 조선 국왕 仁祖를 구원하기 위해 출동했던 勤王軍의 활동에 대한 연구이다. 그동안 병자호란에 대한 연구는 당시의 국제적 역학 관계와 전쟁의 발생 경위, 패전의 정치적 파장에 집중되어 왔다. 군사적인 측면에서는 당시 조선의 전술 논의, 방어책 등에 관심이 모아진 반면, 근왕군의 활동에 대해서는 충분히 검토되지 못했다. 본 연구는 각 지방 근왕군의 활동을 전체적으로 조망해봄으로써 조선이 후금(청)의 군사적 위협에 대해 수동적인 자세로 일관하지 않았음을 밝히고자 했다.
병자호란은 남한산성을 중심으로 국면이 전개되었다. 조선군은 서북 지역에서 청군의 진격을 효과적으로 방어하지 못했고, 그 결과 인조가 남한산성으로 입보했기 때문이다. 인조는 남한산성에 고립된 상황에서 지방군의 구원을 기다리는 처지에 놓였다. 이로 인해 전쟁은 포위망을 구축하려는 청군과 이러한 국면을 타개하려는 조선 근왕군이 남한산성 부근에서 전투를 치르는 양상으로 진행되었다.
본 연구에서는 청군의 진격로를 검토하여 그들의 행군 과정이 순탄하지만은 않았음을 강조하고, 이를 통해 조선의 서북 지역 방어체제를 분석한 뒤 인조가 남한산성으로 입보하게 된 경위를 밝혀보고자 했다. 남한산성 부근으로 집결하고자 했던 각 지방 근왕군은 상당히 큰 규모의 병력을 갖추고서 빠른 속도로 진격했는데, 그것이 가능했던 이유는 정묘호란 이후 전임 營將을 두어 束伍軍을 단속해왔기 때문이었다. 인조의 항복으로 근왕군의 활동은 실패했지만, 조선이 후금(청)의 위협에 대비한 군사적 장치를 마련하고자 노력해왔음을 보여주고 있다.

This study sheds light on the activities of Joseon troops loyal to the King Injo(勤王軍), which gathered to rescue the King, from the local regions to the vicinity of the Namhansanseong Fortress(南漢山城). Preceding researches, which were based on the diplomatic views, have focused on the international relationship, the origin of war, and the political impact of the defeat. Meanwhile research which put emphasis on the military aspect has yet to be carried out, due to fact that Joseon was defeated at the war and due to the critical understanding that Joseon could not face the international situation with equanimity, while being in favor of the fidelity to the Ming dynasty. This led to the widespread recognition that Joseon government did not take military steps corresponding to the probable war, although it could have predicted the possibility of war.
The main stage of the Manchu’s invasion of Korea in 1636(丙子胡亂) was the Namhansanseong Fortress． Joseon Army could not check the advance of the Qing China(淸) at the northwestern region, resulting in the King Injo’s entering into the Namhansanseong Fortress．Being isolated, the King Injo had no choice but to wait the local army’s coming to rescue him. Therefore the war progressed with the two parties conflicting around the Namhansanseong Fortress: the Qing China’s army trying to encircle the King Injo and the Joseon army struggling to rescue the King. Thus it is necessary to comprehend the activities of Joseon troops loyal to the king in order to understand the Second Manchu invasion of Korea from the military perspective.
This article aims to examine the organization of Qing army and its route and analyze the strategy of Joseon to defend its northwestern region with regard to the reason the King Injo entered into the Namhansanseong Fortress. The activities of Joseon troops loyal to the king would be discussed to figure out the whole picture of the Joseon’s military strategy. This article would suggest that the local army of the Joseon during the war acted speedily, that their scale was quite large, and that the activities of the army were effective to some extent. This was the fruit of Joseon government’s struggle to devise the defense strategy toward the Later Jin(後金)／Qing China(淸) for a long time. It is true that Joseon tried to avail diplomatic measures to solve the conflict with the Qing China. Joseon government, however, did not solely depend upon the passive strategy, with no preparation for the war.
