古山竺演 作 法藏寺 阿彌陀掛佛圖 硏究 (A Study on the Banner Painting of Amitabha by GosanChugyeon in Beopjang-sa Temple)

초록

‘고산축연’이 그린 서울 법장사 소장의 감로암 아미타괘불도는 조성연대가 1900년대 전반으로 다소 뒤지기는 하나 조성 당시의 봉안사찰과 조성내력 및 조성화원을 알려주는 화기가 분명하게 남아 있고, 괘불도 윗면에 걸어두는 복장주머니에서 조성발원문 등의 복장품 출현은 물론 그림의 좌․우변과 하변에 언문체의 시주자 명단이 묵서되어 있어 학술적 자료가치가 높은 것으로 평가되고 있다.
보존상태가 좋지 않아 최근 들어 전면적인 보존처리(수리․배접)와 함께 묵선묘모사도를 작성함으로써, 얼핏 보아 지나치기 쉬운 세부까지도 파악할 수 있게 되어 본 논문에서는 본래 괘불도와 모사도 간의 비교를 통한 도상 및 양식특징을 고찰해봄으로써 고산축연의 만년기에 해당하는 불화화풍 이해에 보다 접근해보고자 하였다.
본격적인 접근에 앞서 먼저 1920년대를 하한으로 하는 19-20세기 전반 아미타불괘불도의 조성현황과 함께 당시 사회의 시대적 배경 및 유형, 고산축연 유파의 활동과 괘불화 화풍에 대해 알아보았으며, 이어서 법장사 아미타괘불도의 도상 및 양식특징에 대해 구체적으로 살펴보았다.
법장사 아미타괘불도는 19-20세기 전반에 조성된 40여 점의 괘불화 가운데 ‘고산축연’이 만년에 그린 불화로서, 존상의 신체를 나타내는데 있어서는 그 동안의 불화와 다름없이 전통적인 표현을 충실하게 따르고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 그러면서도 한편으로는 자유자재한 필선의 구사와 밝고 명랑한 느낌의 색채를 사용하고 부분적으로 음영을 가미한 바림기법을 적용함으로써 변화를 보이는 그 만의 화풍상 특색을 가늠해 볼 수 있다. 특히 ‘축연’은 대세지보살이 쓰고 있는 보관의 정병과 관음보살이 두 손으로 받쳐 들고 있는 감로병 표면 장식에 부정형 선을 구사하여 현대적 느낌이 나도록 장식하고 있는 점은 다른 불화에서는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없는 새로운 면으로서 ‘축연’ 나름의 표현기법이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
비록 한정된 자료이기는 하나 보수과정과 묵선묘모사도 작성을 통한 정밀분석을 시도해 봄으로써 만년기 ‘축연’의 작풍을 보다 면밀히 파악할 수 있었다는데 연구 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

The Banner painting of Amitabha in Beopjang-sa Temple, Seoul, though created in the 1900’s, a somewhat late period, is evaluated as having high academic values since there is clear record of painting that informs us of the history of its creation, its painter, and the temple enshrining it at the time of creation, hidden articles like the prayer for creation are found from the pocket hanging on the upper side of the painting, and lists of donators are written with ink in Hangeul(한글) on the right, left, and bottom sides of the painting.
As the details of the painting that one can overlook have become easily detectable with recent overall preservation processing(repair and side graft) and creation of a Mukseonmyo(墨線描) Copy due to its poor state, this paper tries to understand the style of Buddhist painting by GosanChugyeon(古山竺演) in his late period by examining iconographic and modal characteristics of the painting in terms of its comparison with the copy.
Before full-fledged discussion, this paper investigates the social background at that time, the activities and painting styles of the GosanChugyeon faction as well as the conditions of the creation of Amitabha Banner paintings in the 19th century and the early 20th century with the 1920s as the limitation of investigation.
We can see that the Banner painting of Amitbha in Beopjang-sa Temple, drawn by GosanChugyeon in his late years, among other 40 Banner paintings created in the 19th century and the early 20th century, fully complies to traditional expressions in showing the Buddha’s body as other Buddhist paintings so far. On the other hand, we can simultaneously observe his own characteristics of painting style in which he exerts free brush lines, uses delightful colors, and shows variations by applying Western painting techniques with partial addition of shades. In particular, the modern-flavor ornamentation with indefinite lines on the surface of the kundika on the jewellery wreath worn by Mahasthama-prapta(大勢至菩薩) and the nectar bottle held by Avalokitesvara(觀音菩薩) in the hand is a novel feature that cannot be easily found from other Buddhist paintings, and hence we can claim that it is Chugyeon’s own technique of expression.
We believe that this study is significant, though with limited materials, in that it can closely observe the painting style of Chugyeon in his late years by trying a close analysis of the work in terms of the repair process and the creation of the Mukseonmyo Copy.
