조선시대 문인의 주왕산 유람과 문학적 형상화 (Literary men's Excursion to Mt. Juwangsan and their Literal Figuration)

초록

승경을 유람하며 시문을 제작할 때 대상의 명칭에 담긴 의미를 파악하는 일은 매우 중대한 사안이다. 대상의 명칭은 창작의 과정에서 破題의 대상이 되거니와 그 이름에는 주변 풍광의 특징을 위시하여 해당 지역에 얽힌 다양한 이야기가 압축되어 있기 때문이다. 본고에서는 이러한 점에 착안하여 周王山과 관련된 다양한 설화를 정리함으로써 ‘주왕’이라는 명칭의 연원을 고구했고 주왕 설화에 대한 조선 문인의 인식을 검토하였다.
천인벽립의 기상을 자랑하는 주왕산은 수많은 봉우리가 바위로 뒤덮여 있고 산세 또한 기굴하기 짝이 없다. 주왕산을 소재로 제작된 한시는 명사의 사용을 최대한 억제하는 대신, 동적인 느낌이 강한 술어를 적극 구사함으로써 대상의 웅장한 형상과 험준한 산세를 역동적으로 묘사한다는 특징을 보인다. 주왕산 遊記에 구현된 수사 장치 가운데 주목할 만한 것은 ‘引古取譬’의 기법이다. 이것은 전고를 인용하여 비유를 통해 경물을 묘사하는 방법으로서 張顯光에 의해 시도되고 權濂에 의해 계승되었다. 이들은 기암괴석의 천태만상을 조감하며 자신이 읽었던 다양한 전적 속에 등장하는 성인과 영웅호걸을 떠올렸고 그것을 정제된 구법으로 형상화함으로써 중후하고 경건한 분위기와 웅장한 미감을 중첩시켰다.
주왕산을 유람한 인물들은 대부분 주왕 설화의 허황됨을 꼬집었으나, 해당 설화를 한시 작품에 수렴할 때는 일단 역사적 사실로 가정한 뒤 흥망성쇠에 대한 회고의 뜻을 펼치기도 했고, 人和와 德治, 내면수양의 중요성 등 역사적 교훈을 피력하기도 했다. 이밖에 주왕산의 지리적 속성이나 외형적 특징에 착안하여 자연과 인간의 遇･不遇, 혹은 사물의 상대적 가치 등에 관한 의론을 개진하기도 했으며, 이와는 반대로 객관적 안목으로 주왕산의 단점을 거론하며 혹평을 가하기도 했다.

영어초록

When excusing to Juwangsan or writing poetry about Juwangsan, people face the name of mountain, ’Juwang(周王)’. ‘Juwang’ is the emblem of excursion space and comes in for the preface of the poetry. There have been many tales about the origin of the mountain’s name, Juwang such as Prince of Silla(新羅王子)’s tale, King of Silla(新羅王)’s tale, Judo(周鍍)'s tale, Jubang(周房)'s tale. Except the Jundo’s tale, the three tales had been come down even before the Reign of Seonjo. In the latter period of Joseon, literary men excursed to Juwangsan keeping the Judo’s tale in mind and wrote verse and prose assuming the tale as historical truth regardless of its genuineness. Most debates were denied by Ryu, Jung-mun(柳鼎文), Huh, hun(許薰) and Jubang's tale was judged to be highly probable. To explain this tale, the mountain was originally named Jubang(周房) because of the figure of mountain and was transformed to ’Juwang(周王)’ which is pronounced similarly. And then, posterity made up a story out of it.
The common feature of Han-si(chinese poetries) on Juwangsan is that predicator(述語) with dynamic image is frequently used in the texts instead of using noun(名詞) in order to emphasize the magnificent view of Juwangsan. The most significant literary device of the prose for Juwangsan excursion is In-go-chui-bi(引古取譬) technique that describes natural features through metaphor by citing historical precedents and old stories This was introduced by Jang, hyungwang(張顯光) and was inherited by Ryum, Kwon(權濂). While enjoying the view of Juwangsan, they associated the oddly formed rocks and strangely shaped stones in myriad forms with saints and heros from the various history books that they read. And they crystallized the images with refined writing techniques. Therefore, the feeling of dignified and reverential scenes of history and the natural beauty of the magnificent mountain are overlapped. Consequently, this doubled the thrill.
Many literary men who excursed to Juwangsan criticized Juwang's tale due to its unreality. However, when applying the tale to literary works, Han-si(chinese poetries), they simply assumed the tale as historical truth and even reminiscently stated their views on the rise and fall of the nation. Also, they emphasized the historical lessons on the harmony and benevolent administration. Besides, they expressed their opinions about the encounter(遇) and separation(不遇) of nature and human, relative value of things taking a notion of geographical and configurational properties of Juwangsan. On the contrary to this, some people criticized bringing up defects of Juwangsan from the objective point of view.
