남원 교룡산성의 변천 과정과 고고학적 가치 (Transformation of Namwon Gyoryongsanseong Fortress and Its Archaeological Value)

초록

이 글은 그간에 조사성과를 토대로 남원 교룡산성의 변화상을 살펴보고, 호남 제일의 요해지(要害地)이자 방어시설인 교룡산성의 고고학적 가치를 제시하였다.
주지하다시피 교룡산성이 위치한 남원 시가지(市街地) 일대는 685년(신문왕 5) 3월에 남원소경(南原小京)이 설치되고, 691년에 소경성(小京城)의 축성이 이루어졌다. 당시 남원소경은왕경과 닮은 격자형의 토지구획을 적용한 시가지를 조성하고, 조선시대의 남원읍성(南原邑 城) 자리에 소경성(治所城)을 축조하여 중심공간으로 활용하였다. 그리고 그 배후에 교룡산성을 축조하였다. 평지에 축조된 소경성과 배후산성(背後山城)을 조합한 당시의 도시계획은 완산주(全州)와 무진주(武州)에서도 찾아볼 수 있다.
당시 완산주와 무진주에는 평지 시가지의 중심공간에 주성(州城=治所城), 배후에 석축산성을 축조하여 일반군현과 차별화 된 경관을 연출했다. 이러한 형태는 국가의 엄격한 관리하에 주‧소경에만 특화하여 정비된 것으로 이해된다. 특히 완산주의 배후에 축조된 전주 동고산성은 교룡산성과의 여러 속성에서 동질성이 간취된다. 1,000m 이상의 대형급 산성으로 분류되며, 수원확보와 장기간의 농성에 유리한 포곡식 산성으로서 성내 지형의 활용방식과 부대시설의 배치양상이 닮아 있다.
무엇보다 주목되는 점은 교룡산성의 초축 성벽과 동일한 축성법이 적용된 점이다. 성벽은내구성과 안정성을 유지하기 위해 외벽 기저부에 지대석(地臺石)을 배치하고, 방형 또는 장방형으로 가공된 성돌을 바르게 들여쌓았다. 이와 같은 통일신라시대의 전형적인 축성법은 완산주와 무진주에 편제된 군현성(郡縣城)과 경주 관문성(722)을 비롯한 타 지역에서도 확인할수 있다.
고려와 조선시대에 교룡산성은 통일신라시대의 원형인 평지 치소성과 배후산성이 하나의조(組)를 이루면서 입보용(入保用)의 기능을 유지하였다. 고려시대에는 대몽항쟁기와 왜구의침입이 본격화되는 고려 후기에 활용되었을 것으로 추정된다. 조선시대에는 국가의 산성입보전략에 따라 시대적 상황에 맞게 운영되었다. 현존하는 교룡산성은 임진왜란과 정유재란 이후18세기 초반에 수‧개축되어 완성되었지만, 그 원형은 통일신라시대에 갖춰진 것임을 알 수있었다.
이상의 내용을 정리하면, 교룡산성은 통일신라시대에 초축되어 조선시대까지 시대적 상황에 맞게 활용되었다. 특히 통일신라시대의 초축 성벽은 시대를 달리하여 수‧개축되는 성벽의근간이 되었으며, 이러한 성벽에는 각 시대에 맞는 축성기술과 역사적 경험이 반영되어 있다.
향후 남원지역의 정체성을 담고 있는 교룡산성에 대한 체계적인 조사와 연구를 통해 시기별특징과 성격이 보다 입체적으로 규명되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This thesis, which investigates the alterations to Namwon Gyoryong Fortress—the greatest defensive structure in Honam and a prominent strategic location—based on the investigation's findings—presents the archaeological value of Gyoryong Fortress. It is well known that Namwon Sogyeong was founded around urban area, where Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is located, in March 685 (under King Sinmun 5), and that regional capital fortress was constructed in 691.
Namwon Sogyeong established an urban area at that time that used a land division in grid pattern similar to that of the capital and constructed regional capital Fortress at the location of Namwoneupseong in the Joseon Dynasty to use it as a main space. Gyoryongsanseong Fortress was constructed behind it. Wansanju and Mujinju also indicate the period city layout integrating regional capital Fortress and Background Mountain Fortress erected on flat land.
A State fortress (州城=治所城) was constructed in the flat city region of Wansanju and Mujinju at that time, and a Sukchuk fortress was constructed from the behind, resulting in a scenery that was distinct from other counties and prefectures. It is thought that under rigorous governmental control, this design wascreated especially for capital and minor areas. In instance, Donggosanseong Fortress in Jeonju, which wasconstructed by Wansanju, and Gyoryong Fortress have homogeneities in many ways. The manner of employing the terrain and the design of auxiliary facilities in the fortress are similar, and it is categorized as a massive fortress with a height of 1,000m or more that is useful for safeguarding water supplies and long-term agriculture.
Above all, it is remarkable that the initial fortress wall of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress used the same construction technique. Foundation stones were placed at the bottom of the outer wall to preserve the fortress wall's strength and stability, and square or rectangular fortress stones were appropriately piled. Other locations, such as Gunhyeonseong and Gyeongju Gwanmunseong(722), which are assembled in Wansanju and Mujinju, may be discovered using this common building technique from the Unified Silla period.
Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, the circular land during the Unified Silla Period, continued to serve as an access point throughout the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties while joining forces with Chisoseong Fortress in the flatland and Background mountain Fortress. It is believed that it was in use during the Goryeo Dynasty's last years, when the anti-mongol struggle and Japanese invasion was at its height. It was run in accordance with the conditions of the time and the country's fortress entrance strategy during the Joseon Dynasty. The current Gyoryong Fortress was finished in the early 18th century after being rebuilt and refurbished during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, although it was later discovered that its original structure was constructed during the Unified Silla period.
According to the preceding information, Gyoryongsanseong Fortress was first constructed in the Unified Silla Period and was used until the Joseon Dynasty. Particularly, original fortress walls during the Unified Silla Period served as the foundation for the fortress walls that were restored and refurbished in other ages, and these fortress walls represent the fortification methods and historical experiences appropriate for each era. Through examination and research on Gyoryongsanseong Fortress, which includes the identity of the Namwon area, it is anticipated that the traits and traits of each era will be recognized in solid in the future.
