익산 미륵산성의 조사 성과와 향후 과제 (The Results of Investigation into Mireuksanseong Fortress in Iksan and the Future Tasks)

초록

현재 익산 관내에는 사적으로 지정된 익산토성을 포함하여 모두 11곳의 산성이 분포되어 있는데 가장 큰 규모를 자랑하는 미륵산성은 발굴조사를 통해 통일신라시대에 축조된 것으로 확인되었다.
미륵산성은 해발 430m인 미륵산 정상부를 중심으로 동쪽과 남쪽으로 뻗은 능선과 동쪽 계곡을 가로질러 축조한 둘레는 1,776m에 달하는 포곡식(包谷式) 석축산성이다.
미륵산성의 성벽은 지형에 따라 협축식, 편축식 등의 방법을 혼합 사용하여 축조하였으며, 성벽의 폭은 대체로 5~8m 내외이다. 전체적으로 볼 때 체성의 쌓기 및 보축 방법, 현문식 문의 구조 등에서 통일신라시대의 성곽 축조 방식을 살펴볼 수 있다.
미륵산성 내 건물지는 제1단 석축의 출입시설과 제3단~제5단 석축에서 건물지가 시설되었다. 특히, 제5단 석축에서 조사된 건물지는 2층 누각형식의 건물지로 미륵산성 내 가장 중요한 시설로 판단된다.
미륵산성에 대한 향후 연구는 미륵산 전체에 대한 정밀지표조사와 백제시대 축성설에 대한 확인이 선행되어야 미륵산성의 진정한 정체성에 접근할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 통일신라시대 미륵사지의 확장, 왕궁리유적의 중건, 미륵산성의 축조 등 백제 멸망 이후 익산은 여전히 정치, 군사, 문화 등의 중심적인 역할을 했을 것으로 추정된다. 이들 유적의 상호 관련성에 대한 종합적인 연구가 이루어진다면 미륵산성에 대한 명확한 성격이 파악될 것으로 본다.

영어초록

Currently, 11 fortresses are distributed in the area of Iksan, including Iksan Earthen Fortification which is designated as a historic site. Mireuksanseong Fortress that boasts the largest scale of them was confirmed from excavation researches to have been built during the period of Unified Silla Kingdom.
Mireuksanseong Fortress is a stonework of valley-inclusive style (包谷式) with a circumference of 1,776m, built across the ridges extending east and south and the valley on the east, centering on the summit of Mireuksan, a mountain which is 430m above sea level.
The walls of Mireuksanseong Fortress were built by employing a combination of the methods such as stones stacked in- and outside of the wall (夾築式), stones stacked at one side (片築式), etc. in consideration of the topography, and the width of the fortress walls was mostly around 5-8m. Overall, we can get a sense of the Unified Silla Kingdom's way of building the fortresses in terms of the form of main or original wall, retention method, structure of hanging doors (懸門式), etc. in the Mireuksanseong Fortress.
The building sites within Mireuksanseong Fortress include the sites where access facilities to the 1st layer of stone works were constructed and buildings were erected on the 3rd to 5th layers of stone works. The building site investigated on the fifth layer of stone works, particularly, is a two-story pavilion-type building site, and it is judged to be the most important facility in Mireuksanseong Fortress.
Any future works to unveil the true identity of Mireuksanseong Fortress are believed to have to be preceded first of all by detailed ground level surveys of the entire Mireuksan Mountain and by confirmation of the argument regarding whether it was constructed during the Baekje Kingdom era. Just on the basis of such works as expansion of Mireuksa Temple site, reconstruction of Wanggung-ri remains, construction of Mireuksanseong Fortress during the Unified Silla era, it could be presumed that Iksan continued playing a central role in politics, military, culture, etc. even after the fall of Baekje Kingdom. Once a comprehensive study on the interrelationships of these ruins could be conducted, it is expected that the nature of Mireuksanseong Fortress and others might further be identified.
