尼山 南廷瓚의 시세계 고찰 (A study of the poetic world of Nisan Nam Jung-Chan)

초록

이 글은 19세기 말 의령 사족인 尼山 南廷瓚(1850~1900)의 시세계를 조명하고 이를 통해 그의 한시가 가지는 의미를 살피고자 했다. 먼저 그의 시는 네 가지의 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 외세의 침범과 내부의 정치적 소용돌이로 매우 혼란한 시 대를 시를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 그의 시는 혼란의 시대를 어떻게 살 것인가 끊임 없이 고민하는 지식인의 고뇌가 담겨 있었으며, 또한 당시 국가의 참혹한 현실을 증언하고 기록하는 역할을 하고 있었다. 둘째, 학문과 수신에 대한 그의 생각을 읽 을 수 있었다. 특히 주희의 ‘경’ 공부를 강조하고 삶의 정표로 삼고 있으며, 주희 를 잇는 정통학문-유학 전승의 의지를 확인하였다. 셋째, 의령뿐만 아니라 주변 지 역의 역사적인 현장인 재실, 누정 등을 찾아서 지역 사우들과 회합을 도모한 것이 다. 이를 통해 문중의 일이나 사족들과 교유에서 전통의 단절이라는 우려를 해소하 고 이를 계승시키고자 하는 의식을 읽을 수 있었다. 넷째, 관직의 기회를 접고 고향에 은거하여 지내면서 그때의 심회를 지은 시에서는 도연명의 삶의 자세를 따르고 자 하였으며, 자연과 벗하며 진정한 즐거움을 표출하기도 하였다. 그러나 남정찬이 추구하던 삶, 즉 세상에서 벗어나 고원하게 절개를 지키고자 한 삶은 나라의 존망 의 위기에서 느끼는 상실감, 무게감에서 편치 않았음을 알 수 있었다.
결과적으로 그의 시는 19세기 말 의령에 기반을 잡고 살아온 사족으로서 가문의 위상과 학문의 영향, 자신의 성정, 관직 진출, 향촌 사회에서의 활동 등 지방 사족의 삶과 의식세계를 읽을 수 있었다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 국권 침탈의 시기, 즉 특 수한 시대 지식인의 삶과 의식을 담아냄으로써 전통 유학자들의 의식을 강화하는 데 기여, 중요한 가치를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article aims to shed light on the poetic world of Nisan Nam Jeong-chan (1850–1900), a Uiryeong nobleman of the late 19th century, and to explore the significance of his Sino-Korean poems. His poetic world reveals, first and foremost, the turbulent era marked by foreign invasions and internal political upheaval. His poems embody the anguish of an intellectual constantly pondering how to live through such chaotic times. Furthermore, they serve to testify to and document the harrowing realities of the nation during that period.
Second, his poetry reflects his thoughts on scholarship and self-cultivation. In particular, he emphasized Zhu Xi's study of reverence, adopting it as a guiding principle for life, and demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving the orthodox scholarly tradition and the Confucian legacy passed down from Zhu Xi.
Third, he visited historical sites in Uiryeong and surrounding areas, such as the ancestral shrines and pavilions, and sought to foster meetings with local scholars. Through this, he aimed to alleviate concerns about the disruption of tradition through the clan gatherings and interactions with other gentry, and his intention to preserve and pass down this tradition could be seen in his poetry..
Fourth, in the poetry he composed after retreating from opportunities for official positions to live in seclusion in his hometown, he expressed a desire to emulate the life philosophy of Tao Yuanming. His works reveal moments of true joy as he found companionship in nature. However, it becomes evident that the life Nisan aspired to—a life of transcendent integrity removed from worldly concerns—was overshadowed by the profound sense of loss and weight of responsibility he felt during a time of national crisis and existential uncertainty.
In conclusion, Nisan's poetry holds significance in that it provides insights into the life and consciousness of a local gentry of late 19th-century Uiryeong. Through his works, one can trace the prominence of his family, the influence of Confucian scholarship, his temperament, ambitions for official positions, and activities within his rural community. His poetry also reflects the multifaceted aspects of life during a period of national upheaval, contributing to the reinforcement of traditional Confucian values during the loss of national sovereignty. Sino-Korean literature entered a period of decline during the Japanese colonial period. Still, it was confirmed that the artistic value of Sino-Korean poetry creation did not entirely disappear. By capturing the life and consciousness of an intellectual during a unique era, his poems can be said to hold significant value.
