논산 지역 동학농민혁명 연구- 연산 전투, 노성 봉화산 전투, 소토산·황화대 전투를 중심으로 (Nonsan region and the Donghak Peasant Revolution : Focusing on Yeonsan battle and Sotosan-Hwanghwadae battle)

초록

논산지역은 동학농민혁명 2차 봉기시기에 공주전투 이후 후퇴하는 동학농민군을 체계적으로 이해하는데 중요한 지역이다. 논산에서 남북 접 동학농민군이 결성되어 공주성 전투에 나섰고, 후퇴한 동학농민군 이 논산 곳곳에서 전투를 치러 진격과 후퇴의 상징적인 의미를 지니는 지역이다.
전라도 전봉준 중심으로 바라보던 동학농민혁명의 시선을 돌려 전국 적인 사건으로 이해해야 한다는 맥락에서도 논산지역의 동학농민혁명 사 연구는 필요하다. 이 연구는 2차 기포 시기에 남북접 연합 동학농민 군이 결성된 소토산과 연산 전투, 노성 봉화산 전투, 소토산·황화대 전투에 한정하고자 한다.
1984년 6월 일본군이 조선 침략을 위해 경복궁을 무력으로 점령하 자 동학농민군은 2차 봉기에 나섰다. 남북접 연합 동학농민군은 논산 소토산에 집결하여 연합군진을 형성하여 서울로 진군했다. 그러나 동 학농민군은 공주 우금치에서 관·일본 연합군에 패해 물러났다.
동학농민군 본진은 노성에 잠시 머물며 전열을 가다듬고 새로운 진격을 준비했다. 대지휘소에서 정치적 선전 작업을 펼치는 한편, 수습 된 동학농민군 두 정예부대를 투입했다. 연산 전투에는 청주에서 패하 고 내려온 김개남군이 합류함으로써, 우금치 전투 이후에 벌어진 첫 번째 전투이자 가장 큰 규모의 전투였다. 그러나 이 전투에서 동학농 민군은 신식 무기로 무장된 관·일본 연합군에 패했고, 계획했던 전투 전략을 변경하는 계기가 되었다.
동학농민군은 관·일본 연합군의 추격을 예상하고 노성 봉황산을 거 쳐 서둘러 논산 소토산으로 본진을 옮겼다. 소토산은 남북접 연합군이 새 진영을 펼치고 대지휘소를 설치했던 곳이다. 관·일본 연합군이 신 식무기를 앞세워 소토산을 향해 세 방향에서 압박해 들어오자 동학농 민군은 방어에 더 유리한 인근의 황화대로 다시 진을 옮겨 항전에 들어 갔다. 그러나 구식무기에, 사기마저 꺾인 동학농민군에게 전투다운 전 투는 수행하기 어려웠다. 전열이 삽시간에 무너지며, 서둘러 전주 방 면으로 퇴각했다. 그리고 동학농민군은 원평전투와 태인전투를 끝으로 해산했다. 그리고 논산 지역 동학농민군은 가혹한 토벌전에서 희생되었다.

영어초록

Nonsan is an indispensable area for systematic understanding of the retreating peasant army around the Second Uprising of the Donghak Peasant Revolution after the Gongju Battle. This article is to be studied being limited only in the Nonsan area. Here, there were big events such as the alliance between the two main camps from the north(currently Chungchung Province)- south(Jeolla Province) region, and the Battle of Yeonsan and the Battle of Sotosan-Suhwadae. The study of this region can be said to be of great significance in that it has the symbolism of the junction between two regions and that of advancement and retreat, while spreading the perspectives on the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which was viewed only in a specific region, nationwide.
In 1984, the Donghak Peasant Army attempted a second uprising, resisting the Japanese military’s armed occupation of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The peasant army from the north and the south gathered at Sotosan Mountain in Nonsan (currently Daelim Apartment and Gwaneumsa Hill), and marched toward Seoul. However, it was blocked by strong resistance from the suppression forces in Gongju.
The main camp of the peasant army stayed in Noseong for a while, as seeking to advance again. While carrying out political propaganda work there, a large-scale elite unit with some of new weapons was put into Yeonsan region. It was the largest battle since the Battle of Ugeumchi, currently Yeonsan region. But it failed, and it changed its strategic route originally planned.
As if it had expected the pursuit of the suppression forces, the government-Japanese combined forces, it moved to Nonsan in haste. The peasant army returned to Sotosan Mountain, where the North-South allied force formed and unfolded their camps at first. The peasant army could not endure their strong pressure from three directions with new weapons at the forefront of Sotosan Mountain. In the end, it hurriedly moved to Hwanghwadae, currently a mountain behind Daegun High School, which is more advantageous for defense, and prepared for the battle. It was no longer easy to expect a meaningful and successful battle for the discouraged peasant army, mostly being equipped with old-fashioned weapons. It collapsed quickly and retreated toward Jeonju in a hurry. (Sotosan·Suhwadae Battle) And after the Battle of Taein, it was disbanded, looking forward to the potential future. At the end of the disappointing year, it had to find a new way to replace the desperation without hope.
