백두산: 만들어진 전통과 표상 (Baekdu Mountain: The Invention of Tradition and the emblems)

초록

백두산 관광이 가능했던 2000년대 초에는 ‘백두산’를 보면 ‘관광’ 이 떠올랐고, 1980년대에는 ‘백두에서 한라까지’라는 구호와 더불어 ‘통일’이라는 단어가 쉽게 연상되던 것이 ‘백두산’이였다. 본 논문에서는 이와 같이 ‘백두산 재현’이 백두산을 바라보는 ‘시선의 역학’들 속에서 어떤 변주들을 보이는 지 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 이번 발표에서는 대상을 북한지역에서 제작된 풍경화 작품들로 한정하여 살펴보았다.
‘풍경화’ 장르는, <강산의 저녁 노을>(1975년)이라는 대표작의 탄생과 이 작품에 대한 김정일의 높은 평가와 이를 통한 정영만 작가의 성공을 통해 화가들에게 재인식되기 시작하였다. <전국풍경화전람회> 개최 등과 같은 당국의 노력을 토대로 하여, 1980년대가 되자 풍경화에 대한 논의가 본격화되면서 제작 작품수도 현저히 많아지기 시작하였다.
1980년대 들어오면서 풍경화 제작 목적은, ‘백두산’ 혁명사적지, 혁명 전적지들을 통해 김일성의 혁명업적을 더 깊이 알게 하겠다는 내용이 가장 중요한 위치를 차지하게 되었으며, 이는 ‘숭고한 조국애로 이끌어주는 것’이 가장 중요한 목적이었던 1960년대 풍경화 제작의 목적과 차별화된다.
이후 주체문예이론이 확고히 되면서 풍경화에서는 “자연은 어느 것이나 뜻이 깊고 정서가 차 넘치게 그려야 한다.” 창작 방침이 확고히 된다. 특히 2000년대에 들어오면서 ‘뜻’이라는 용어가 ‘사의(寫意)’라는 용어로 대체되면서 문인화의 준법들이 적극적으로 사용되는 사의적 풍경화들이 본격적으로 제작되기 시작하였다. 이러한 형식적 변화 속에서 북한은 ‘민족의 명산’, ‘조종의 산’이라는 백두산의 상징성을 김일성, 김정일 우상화정책에 적극적으로 활용하고 있다.
주체미술에서, 아름다운 것은 객관적으로 존재하는 사물현상이지만 사람의 주관적 정서를 통하여서만 아름답게 느껴질 수 있다는 점을 강조함으로써 백두산이라는 물성은 인간이 지닌 세계관과 철학을 통해서만 그 아름다움을 논할 수 있다는 점을 명확히 하였지만, 역설적이게도 북한 사회에서 이러한 논의는 주체사상이라는 테두리를 더 명확히 하는 토대로만 작동하고 있다.

영어초록

Baekdu Mountain holds great significance for many Koreans. In the early 2000s, South Koreans were finally able to visit the mountain, which soon became a favorite destination of South Korean tourists. During the 1980s, South Koreans used the slogan “From Baekdu to Halla” on occasions calling for the unification of the Korean nation. This paper attempts to investigate diverse reproductions of Baekdu Mountain based on the dynamics of perspective, and to study Baekdu Mountain's significance for Koreans through North Korean landscape paintings in which the mountain serves as a backdrop.
In North Korea, the painting <Dusk of the Country Land>(1975) by Jeong Yeong-man received praise from the country's leader Kim Jong-il. It served as an occasion to re-establish landscape paintings as a priority among the country's painters. In line with the authorities' efforts to publicize landscape paintings via special events such as the Nationwide Landscape Painting Exhibition in the 1980s, many painters dedicated their efforts to that genre of painting.
The main purpose of encouraging landscape paintings during the 1980s was to propagandize Kim Il-sung's ‘revolutionary achievements’ with paintings about historic revolutionary sites, particularly those in and around Baekdu Mountain, as opposed to the policy of “inspiring sublime patriotism in the minds of the people” pursued in the 1960s.
With the emphasis on the spirit of juche(self-reliance) even in literature and the arts, the country established a guideline for landscape paintings to the effect that: “All natural objects should be portrayed in a way that conveys the full range of meanings and emotions.” From the 2000s onwards, the ‘portrayal of significance’ technique came to be adopted positively in landscape paintings. Amid such changes in the styles of painting, North Korea has used the symbolism of Baekdu Mountain, a mountain cherished by its people, in connection with the country's efforts for idolization of its current leader Kim Jong-il and his deceased father Kim Il-sung.
In North Korea's ‘self-reliant’ fine arts, it is stressed that objects can be felt to be beautiful only through a person's subjective sentiment, although beauty is an objective phenomenon, meaning that the physical quality of objects, including Baekdu Mountain, can be discussed only through people's world view and philosophy. However, it is something of a paradox that such a discussion serves only as a basis for consolidating the ideology of self-reliance in North Korea.
