곤륜산과 백두산에 관한 한국의 유선문학과 수근목간 형세론 (On the mystical images of the Kunlun Mountains in Korean fairyland expedition literature(遊仙文學) and the topographical features of Baekdu mountain system(白頭大幹) in Korean geographical history.)

초록

단군신화의 태백산 이미지는 현실적인 정치적 정통론이 강하기 때문에 그에 관한 묘사는 동이족의 삼신산 신화를 비롯하여 서쪽 곤륜신화의 신선세계 또는 불교 수미산의 신화와 다르다. 따라서 태백산은 한국의 유선문학에서 크게 활용하지 않았다. 또한 한국문화의 도교와 신선사상이 속세를 초탈하고 이상향에 관한 종교적 동경을 전개하는 과정에서, 오히려 봉래산과 곤륜신화는 중요한 소재가 되었다. 한국의 유선문학은 늦어도 최치원부터 시작되었다. 고려말기와 조선시기의 유선문학에서는 삼신산과 곤륜산의 이상향을 상상하였고 이상향의 동경을 곤륜산에 기탁하였다. 이러한 이상향 동경은 고려말기부터 청학동을 찾아내어 구체화시켰다.
백두산에 관련하여 신라말기와 고려시기의 한반도 지리학을 대표하는 것은 도선국사의 수모목간(水母木幹) 형세론이다. 이것은 송악산의 산맥이 백두산에서 내려왔고 평양 대동강과 개성 송악산의 지리적 상호보완관계를 설명한 형세론이다. 그렇지만 도선국사의 형세론은 다시 백두산에서 지리산까지 전국의 형세론으로 발전하였고 동시에 고려왕조의 덕운이 수근목간(水根木幹)이기 때문에 복색을 청색으로 바꾸어야한다고 정치적으로 해석되었다.
그러나 조선시기 성리학자들은 오덕종시설을 믿지 않았기 때문에 왕조의 덕운론을 무시하였지만, 형세론을 발전시켜서 한반도 주변의 일본열도와 바다까지 확대시켜 동북아시아의 지리를 이해하였다. 남사고는 남해바다를 비롯하여 일본열도와 류큐열도의 지리를 이해하였다. 그런데 서양의 지리학 지식이 도입된 뒤에 이익은 「만국전도」에 근거하여 도선국사의 수근목간 형세론을 버리고 남북국경지역을 이해하는 목간수근의 형세론을 제시하였다. 이와 같이 도선국사의 수모목간 형세론은 고려시기와 조선시기의 지리학에서 끊임없이 개선되고 발전되었다. 따라서 도선국사의 수모목간 또는 수근목간 형세론은 한국 전통적 지리학의 커다란 발명이며 창견이라고 높이 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

The image of Taebaeksan Mountain in Dangun(檀君) mythology, because of its strong political orthodoxy, differs from that of Samshin(三神山) in the northeast asia, the supernatural being’s world in the mythology of the Kunlun Mountains, or the myth of Mt. Sumi in Buddhism. Thus, the fairyland expedition literature of Korea(遊仙文學) did not make much use of Taebaeksan Mountain. In addition, Bongrae Mountain(蓬萊山) and the Kunlun Myth have become an important subject in the process of shedding the secular world and developing a religious desire to live in an ideal world. Korea's fairyland expedition literature began with Choi Chi-won(崔致遠) at the latest. During the late Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, the fairyland expedition literature has entrusted the ideal of Samsinsan and Kunlun Mountain. This idealized fairyland was discovered and embodied in Cheonghak-dong(靑鶴洞) from the end of the Goryeo Dynasty.
In relation to Mt. Baekdu, Doseon legate(道詵國師)’s the topographical feature that interpromotes the relation of water and wood in five elements theory(水根木幹論) is a creative geographical argument that represents the geography of the Korean Peninsula during the late Silla Dynasty and the Goryeo Dynasty. Its original theory(水母木幹) explains that the mountain range of Mt. Songak came down from Mt. Baekdu and also in the Goryeo Dynasty explains the geographical complementarity relationship between Mt. Songak in Gaeseong and the Daedong River in Pyongyang.
The theory of Doseon legate was developed into the geographical theory of the situation of the whole country from Mt. Baekdu to Mt. Jiri. And it was politically interpreted that the fortune of the Goryeo Dynasty is equal to the relation of water and wood in five elements theory, so the color of the costume should be changed from white to blue because the blue color of the Goryeo Dynasty is wood element.
On the basis of this, they insisted on the restoration of territory of the Goguryeo Kingdom to the Khitan and the Yeojin peoples.
However, Neo-Confucians in the Joseon Dynasty ignored the fortune of the dynasty because they did not believe in the five elements theory, but they on the basis of Doseon legate’s theory expanded the understanding of the geography of Northeast Asia to the Korean East sea and the Japan Islands. The geographer Namsago(南師古) understood the geography of Northeast Asia including the Korean Eouthern sea, saying that both the Japanese islands and the Ryukyu Islands were extended in the Baekdu Mountains.
After Western knowledge of geography was introduced, Lee Ik(李瀷) accepted the globe of earth and abandoned Doseon legate’s topographical feature of the Korean Peninsula. He presented the north and south national boundaries of Korea according to the Map of the World. He changed Doseon legate’s topographical feature of the interpromoting relation of water and wood in five elements theory to the topographical feature of the interpromoting order of wood and water.
As such, the topographical feature of Doseon legate has been continually improved and developed in the geography of the Goryeo and Joseon periods. Therefore, it is highly regarded that the theory of Doseon legate is a great invention and creation of traditional geography in Korea.
