    초록

    This paper reveals that the trends of novel creation from the 1980s to the late 1990s of Wangshuo have a great connection with his ‘Dayuan(大院)’ experience. Based on this, this paper examines the contents, meanings, and limitations of his ‘viewpoint of popular culture’. His experience of Dayuan seems to have largely influenced his creation in two respects. First, Dayuan injected Patriotism into Wang Shuo, and on the other side he strongly planted elitism in his mind. He published works with strong humanistic character and lyricism around 1980, engraved with patriotic and responsible naval soldiers. Since the mid-1980s, Wangshuo has begun to cast a ‘rogue’ shape that rebels against the established order. However, his rogues are still sincere and noble as a ‘literate man who does not get the time’, revealing his distinction with other people. It shows that in his novels, there is still an elitist consciousness inherited from Dayuan.
    On the other hand, his elitist personality reveals serious intolerance and self-contradiction in the attitude of looking at 'popular culture' and in regard to the popular novelist such as Jinyong(金庸). In spite of the fact that since the late 1980s and until now he has been using 'mass media' such as 'movie', 'drama', and 'news' to make his product value steadily, Strongly appeals to the intention to disparage the meaning and value of 'folk novels' and to separate their creations from them. However, in my opinion, he has taken a very compromising and eclectic position between his elitist literary ideal and the economic reality, which has earned him considerable wealth and reputation. I do not agree with some critics who criticize him wit outdated artistic or moral standards. However, the contradiction of Wangshuo is to use the old standard of criticizing oneself to criticize popular novelists such as Jinyong and Qiongyao(琼瑶).
