초록

은봉 안방준은 17세기 조선의 대표적인 유학자로서 의리의 실천에 앞장섰던 인물이다. 이 글은 안방준의 의병 활동과 당대사 저술을 통해 안방준 사상의 특징을 구체화하기 위해 작성되었다.
안방준은 왜란과 호란 때 모두 의병을 일으켰다. 비록 빼어난 공적은 세우지 않았으나, 의병을 일으키는데 주저하지 않았다. 특히 두 차례의 호란 때는 의병장으로서 적극적인 모습을 띠었다. 안방준이 평생에 걸쳐 추구했던 ‘절의’가 국난의 시기에 행동으로 표출된 것에 다름 아니었다고 할 수 있다.
안방준의 당대사 저술은 크게 두 종류로 나뉜다. 하나는 안방준의 학맥과 관련된 인물들을 변론하는 내용의 저술이다. 두 번째는 임진왜란 및 의병과 관련된 저술로 총 8편이 있다. 이들 저술은 평전 성격의 글이 대부분이다. 그리고 그가 다룬 인물이 총 38명인데 그 중 호남 출신이 27명에 달한다. 그것은 그가 행적을 분명하게 파악할 수 있는 인물로 서술 대상을 제한한 결과였다.
그는 많은 의병장 중에서 크게 세 가지 원칙을 가지고 인물을 선정하였다. 하나는 진실과 거짓이 섞이면서 정당하게 평가받지 못한 이들을 재평가하는 것이었다. 두 번째는 세운 공에 비해 이름이 알려지지 않은 이들을 발굴하는 것이다. 마지막으로 안방준이 ‘절의’로 평가한 이들의 공통점은 도망가거나 피할 기회가 있었음에도 자발적으로 사지로 향한 것이었다.
이러한 원칙을 가지고 인물을 선정하고 당대사를 저술한 것은 절의를 숭상하는 분위기를 만들어 국가의 원기를 북돋아주기 위한 것이었다. 안방준은 절의가 갖는 가치와 의미를 백성들이 인식하기 위해, 절의를 실제로 실현한 인물들에 대한 예우를 강조하였다. 다만 실제로는 절의를 행한 인물이 아닌데도 외람되게 그 명성을 차지하고 있거나, 혹은 충분한 자격이 됨에도 불구하고 제대로된 평가와 대우를 받지 못하는 현실을 목격하였다. 이러한 상황을 방관하면 그것은 오히려 절의에 해가 되는 것이고 요행을 바라는 풍조가 만연하는 결과를 낳을 수 있다. 이 때문에 안방준은 자신이 객관적으로 인정할 수 있는 증거가 충분한, 자신이 많은 사례들을 찾을 수 있는 전라도의 주변 인물들의 행적을 조사하고 이를 바탕으로 절의를 실천하였음이 분명한 의병장의 행적을 저술하였던 것이다. 나아가 이들에 대한 포상과 그 후손들에 대한 우대 조치를 이끌어냄으로써 절의를 중시하는 분위기를 만들려고 하였다. 바로 여기에 안방준이 당대사를 저술한 목적과 동기가 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

Ahn Bang-jun was a prominent Confucian scholar of 17th-century Joseon who exemplified the practice of loyalty and righteousness. This article aims to elucidate the characteristics of Ahn Bang-jun's philosophy by examining his activities as a leader of righteous armies(義兵) and his contemporary historical writings.
Ahn Bang-jun organized righteous armies during both the Japanese invasions of Korea(Imjin War) and the Manchu invasions of Korea. Although he did not achieve extraordinary military feats, he never hesitated to raise forces in defense of the nation. Notably, during the two Manchu invasions, he took an active role as a righteous army leader. His lifelong pursuit of jeolui (moral integrity and righteousness) was visibly demonstrated during these national crises.
Ahn Bang-jun’s writings on contemporary history can be categorized into two main types. The first type defends figures associated with his academic lineage, while the second pertains to accounts related to the Imjin War and righteous armies. In total, there are eight works of this nature, most of which take the form of biographical sketches. He documented the lives of 38 individuals, of whom 27 were from the Honam region. This focus reflected his decision to limit his subjects to figures whose actions he could clearly verify.
Ahn Bang-jun employed three key principles in selecting individuals for his historical writings: Reassessing figures who had not received due recognition because their deeds were obscured or mixed with falsehoods.
Unearthing lesser-known individuals whose contributions were significant but underappreciated.
Highlighting those who, despite having opportunities to escape danger, voluntarily chose to face life-threatening situations for the sake of righteousness.
By applying these principles, Ahn sought to promote the value of jeolui(節義) and reinvigorate the nation's moral and spiritual vitality. He emphasized honoring those who exemplified righteousness so that the public could understand its significance. However, he observed two concerning phenomena: unworthy individuals unjustly gaining reputations for righteousness and deserving figures being neglected or misjudged. Ahn believed that ignoring such issues would ultimately undermine the essence of jeolui and foster a culture of opportunism.
To counter this, Ahn meticulously researched the deeds of local figures in Jeolla Province whose righteousness he could substantiate with clear evidence. He documented the actions of righteous army leaders who had undeniably practiced jeolui, advocating for their recognition and rewards. He also called for preferential treatment for their descendants. By doing so, Ahn Bang-jun aimed to establish a societal atmosphere that revered jeolui. This mission encapsulated the purpose and motivation behind his contemporary historical writings.
