초록

The study of local history is not unrelated to natural environment and people's lives. The winter temperature for Hongsung where the cold treatment climate is started is yearly average -3˚C. Thus it naturally makes people concern about the cold rather than the heat. Hongsung is 30 minutes away from the West-coast and surrounded by high mountains like Mt. Osu, and the rest areas are formed with the low-end hilly ground of sea level 40~60m. There are also many streams such as Geumma, Waryong, Kwangchun, and Muhan and they wander over the wide plain. These environmental features are deeply involved with various historical events that took place in Hongsung area.
Hongsung functioned as a central place of West-northern Chungnam where Hongjumok and Kyulsunghyun was set up in Joseon era and Unju-dodanryunsa(→Hongjumok) and Kyulsunghyun in Goryeo era in spite of difference in domain. So, a lot of historical events occurred in Hongsung area. At Goryeo era, for instance, there were not only the battles staking the national destiny between post-Bekje and Goryeo but the violent collision between Choi-u and Choi-hang during the Military reign, the attack of Sambyulcho, and Japanese invasions and so on. At Joseon Dynasty era, There were various events like Hongju banishment of Leebanggan, the birth of Sungsammun, Kwanghaegun's attempt to double the government and the erection of South-government building, Chungnangognsin that quelled disturbance of Leemonhak, Hongju army in the cause of justice, Hongju-palace's battle of Donghak peasant movement that took place in Naepo area, and Catholicism pressure at Hongju. Moreover, there was a movement of Bekje reconstrution as well as the birth of poet Hanyongun and General Kimjuajin in Hongsung area. And a lot of people in Hongsung participated in 3·1 Movement and national independence movements.
The natural environment and the historic occasions of Hongsung area were reflected on the study of local history. As 'The Workshop for Hongju's local culture' was organized in 1987 and a local magazine, 『The local culture of Hongju』was published in 1991, many articles with various subjects have been presented. For example, it listed the articles regarding history and local status of Hongsung, Bekje reconstruction movement based on Jurew-palace story, antique remains, movement of Confucianism, Catholicism, and Donghak peasant, great men of Hongju, 3·1 Movement, and customs of the people and so on.
Besides, works related to local history were published by Hongsung Culture Center and Hongsung Office of Education. Hong-seong Culture Center searches and reports mostly customary things, the life of Hongsung people. And it published books, 『A Study of the Old Name of a Place in Hongju』, 『The Cultural Relics of Hongsung』, 『A study of Jurew-palace in Hongju and Bak-cheon River in Dang-jin』 and so on. Hongsung Office of Education has published teaching materials for a local history to inherit and develop 'the spirit of Hong-ju'. Its books, 『Learning Hongjumok of Cho-seon Dynasty with Maps』 and 『Experiential Learning with Themes, Our Home Hongsung』, create each topic and contain wide researches about the surface of the earth and cases of actual excavation.
As above, it is out of question that a lot of achievements are recognized from the study of Hongsung' s local history. However, despite the increase in quantity, we still have more problems awaiting to be solved both in quality and in quantity and this is a challenge that local historians should encounter to upgrade the level of the research. Above all, the most urgent thing is the local historians' effort to promote their professionalism, which means the ability as a one's specialty in specific area. One researcher cannot deal with all part of local history. One must open and develop a new field on one's interest and ability. There is a saying 'You can see what you only know.' You cannot find the materials for local history unless you know them and you will be able to achieve the high quality outcome
