경인통신사의 활동과 일본의 대응 (The Activity Kyongin Tongsinsa and Response of Japan)

초록

히데요시가 對馬島主 宗義智에게 조선 침략의 뜻을 처음으로 표명하는 것은 1586년 6월의 일이다. 규슈를 평정하고 나면 조선으로 들이닥칠 터이니 준비하라는 것이었다. 다음해 6월엔, 20만의 정벌군으로 규슈에 출정나간 히데요시가 대마도주에게 조선국왕의 직접 來朝를 명령했다. 흥미로운 것은 조선국왕이 대마도주에게 복속된 존재로 히데요시가 인식하고 있었다는 사실이다.
조선국왕의 來朝가 불가능하다는 것을 알고 있는 대마도주는 통신사 파견 요청으로 바꿔치기 해 조선에 간청하게 된다. 조선이 이에 전라도 연안을 노략질한 叛民 사화동을 압송해 오면 파견해 주겠다고 조건을 제시했고, 대마도가 이를 이행하자 1590년 5월 경인통신사가 파견된다.
당시 조선은 히데요시가 조선의 권위를 필요로 하고 있는 것으로 인식했다. 그래서 통신사 파견을 새로 즉위한 ‘일본국왕’인 자신에 대한 축하라고 히데요시가 대대적으로 일본 국내에 선전할 것으로 여겼다. 그런 만큼 통신사행의 부사 김성일도 일본정탐이란 측면보다, 100 여년만에 파견되는 이번의 통신사행이 이후의 통신사행에 올바른 모범이 되어야 한다는 신념으로 임했다. 대마도주의 無禮에는 일일이 대응하여 힐책하고, 히데요시의 답서에 있는 부적절한 용어에는 그 수정을 요구했다. 천황이 아닌 ‘關白’ 히데요시에게는 마루 위에서 절하는 楹外拜가 적합하지, 뜰아래에서 행하는 庭下拜가 절대 불가하다고 주장했다.
1590년 7월 통신사가 교토에 체류하고 있음에도 히데요시는 關東지방의 호죠(北條)씨 정벌(小田原 정벌) 때문에 3개월간 출정해 있었고, 교토로 돌아와서도 천황 궁전의 수리 때문에 11월에 가서야 접견을 하게 된다. 이처럼 내란 진압에 분망하고 천황 권위 고양에 진력하는 히데요시를 바라보는 김성일의 눈에 과연 임진왜란이 상상이나 되었을까?한편 대마도는 통신사 파견을 기회로 조선과의 무역관계 확대를 企圖하고 있었다. 특송선의 부활이나 세견선과 圖書의 증가를 획책하였다. 감추고 있던 ‘巨酋’ 쇼니씨와 오우치씨의 멸망 사실을 김성일이 파악하여 힐책하자, 그 땅을 점유하고 있는 고바야카와씨와 모리씨가 멸망한 그 巨酋의 명의를 승계 받아 조선과 무역하고 싶어한다고 다시 속이고 있다. 이로 보면 대마도도 임진왜란의 발발을 아직 예상하고 있지 않다는 것을 알 수 있다. 평화 지속을 전제로 한 무역관계 확대 획책이기 때문이다. 대마도의 이러한 획책을 관찰하고 있는 김성일의 눈에도 다가올 임진왜란이 전혀 그려지지 않았을 것이다.

영어초록

It was in June, 1586 when Toyotomi Hideyoshi expressed his intent to invade Joseon to So Yoshitoshi, ruler of Tsushima island for the first time. His intended to have So Yoshitoshi make preparations for his planned advance to Jeosun soon after his subjugated Kyushu. In June, next year, Toyotomi Hideyoshi went on the war in Kyushu, commanding the expeditionary forces of 200 thousand solders, and ordered the ruler of Tsushima island to request the King of Joseon to pay a personal visit as a official foreign envoy to him.
Interestingly, Toyotomi Hideyoshi recognized the King of Joseon as being subjected to the ruler of Tsushima island. The ruler of Tsushima island already knowing that it is impossible to make the King of Joseon pay a personal visit as a official foreign envoy, entreated Joseon to dispatch the envoy to Japan after unnoticeably changing the scheme originally ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
At this, Joseon suggested a condition to So Yoshitoshi that Joseon would dispatch the envoy if So Yoshitoshi arrest Sa Hwa-dong, rebel of Joseon and send him in custody to Joseon, who pillaged the coast of Jeonra Province so many years. The Gyeongin envoy was dispatched in May, 1590 after So Yoshitoshi fulfilled the condition. At that time, in Joseon, they recognized that Toyotomi Hideyoshi was in need of an authority granted by Joseon, and thought that he would propagandize domestically on a large scale the dispatch of envoy as congratulations on him who became ‘a new King of Japan’. So, Kim Seong-IL, head of envoy group performed his duty with a conviction that the envoy dispatched once in over 100 years should set a good role model rather than in the aspect of spying-out to Japan.
Kim Seong-IL rebuked So Yoshitoshi in response of his discourtesies in every case, and demanded him to correct inappropriate terms stated in the reply letter of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and insisted that Yeongyoibae(kowtow performed on the floor) should be proper for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ganpaku(an assistant to King of Japan in political matters) who was not the King of Japan, and that Jeonghabae(kowtow performed in the yard) must not be accepted in any case.
Although the envoy group stayed in Kyoto in July, 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi went to battle field for 3 months in order to conquer Hyjyo shogun in Kanto Province(Odawara conquest), and even after he returned to Kyoto, the envoy had to wait until November to be granted an audience to Toyotomi Hideyoshi due to repair work of Royal Palace of Japanese King. Looking at Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was busily engaged in suppression of rebellion and committed to the enhancement of dignity of Japanese King, we are wondering if Imjinwaeran(Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) was hardly conceivable to Kim Seong-IL.
In the mean time, the ruler of Tsushima island has intended to expand the trading relationship with Joseon on the occasion of envoy dispatch. He plotted to revive the special carrier, and increase the number of merchant vessels and permission stamps issued by Joseon. When Kim Seong-IL investigated the fall of Shyoni gyochu(shogun in each district) and Ouchi gyochu, which was kept in secret, and rebuked So Yoshitoshi for his concealment of the fact, So Yoshitoshi deceived him again mentioning that Gobayakawa shogun and Mori shogun in possession of the land hoped to trade with Joseon succeeding the name of collapsed gyochu. In view of this, we can see that at that time, the ruler of Tsushima island had not yet expected the outbreak of Imjinwaeran, either. It was because that they plotted to expand the trading relationship based on the continuance of peace. We can sure that Kim Seong-IL never conceived the possibility of coming Imjinwaeran.
