조식 敬義思想의 철학사적 함의 (The Implication of Jo Sik’s Gyeong-Ui Ideology in the History of Philosophy)

초록

남명 조식은 敬義로 학문의 요체를 삼았는데, 그의 敬義思想은 이론과 실제의 두 방면으로 나누어 연구할 수 있다. 첫째, 조식의 경의사상은 先秦 儒學과 宋代 性理學에 그 이론적 연원을 두고 있다. 『周易』에는 “敬으로 안을 곧게 하고, 義로 밖을 가지런하게 한다”는 말이 있는데, 여기에서 敬은 내적인 입신의 근본이고, 義는 외적인 처세의 준칙이다. 이 敬義의 개념은 性理學에서 큰 발전을 이루어, 도덕수양 과정에서 敬을 위주로 한다는 主敬工夫論의 이론적 의거가 되었다. 朱熹는 敬을 중시하여, “敬의 공부는 성인문하에서 제일로 중요한 의무이다. 철두철미하여 잠시라도 중단해서는 안 된다”고 말하였다. 조식은 『주역』의 內敬外義 사상의 영향을 받아서, “안으로 마음을 밝히는 것은 敬이요, 밖으로 행동을 결단하는 것은 義이다”라고 주장하였으며, 또한 성리학의 主敬工夫論의 영향을 받아서, 敬을 위주로 심신을 수양할 것을 강조하였다. 둘째, 조식은 선진 유학과 송대 성리학을 학문적 기반으로 삼았으면서도, 그것을 이론적으로 분석하거나 발전시키기보다는, 敬義의 정신에 입각하여 心性을 수양하고 義理를 구현하는데 진력하였다. 그는 이치를 궁구하는 목적은 실제생활에서의 쓰임을 극진히 하는데 있다고 강조하였는데, 이것은 敬으로 마음을 밝히고 義로 세상일을 결단할 때에만 가능한 것이다. 그러므로 조식은 당시의 부조리한 정치현실 속에서 仕路를 걷는 대신 山林에 거처하면서, 한편으로는 치열하게 자신을 연마하고, 다른 한편으로는 시대의 모순을 통렬하게 비판하면서, 그에 대한 구체적인 대안을 제시하였다. 敬과 義를 함께 견지함으로써 內外가 統合되고 上下가 整齊되며 天人이 合一하게 되는데, 이것이 바로 조식이 갈망했던 경의사상의 실제적 구현이다. 결론적으로, 조식의 경의사상은 위로는 선진 유학을 사상적 종주로 삼았고, 아래로는 송대 성리학을 이론적 핵심으로 삼았는데, 이론에 있어서는 성리학에 머물렀지만, 실천에 있어서는 성리학자들을 넘어섰다고 할 수 있다. 이것이 바로 조식의 경의사상이 갖는 철학사적 함의이다.

영어초록

Nammyeong Jo Sik found the cardinal point of science in Gyeong-Ui. His Gyeong-Ui ideology can be approached in two aspects of theory and practice. First, his Gyeong-Ui ideology has its theoretical origin in pre-Chin Chinese Confucianism and Sung Confucianism of Song Dynasty. There is a phrase, “Making the inside straight with Gyeong and the outside even with Ui” in the Book of Changes. Here, Gyeong is the foundation of an internal rise in the world, whereas Ui is the standing rule of external conduct of life. The Gyeong concept in the Book of Changes made tremendous growth in Sung Confucianism and became a theoretical ground for the theory of Jugyeonggongbu, which means focusing on Gyeong and gathering Ui in the process of moral cultivation. Placing emphasis on Gyeong, Zhu Xi said “Studying Gyeong is the most important duty under the guidance of sages. One must not stop studying Gyeong even for a minute, being thorough with it.” Influenced by the ideology of internal Gyeong and external Ui in the Book of Changes, Jo Shik argued that “Gyeong lights up the inside of the mind, while Ui takes an action on the outside.” He also emphasized that one should cultivate his or her body and mind with a focus on Gyeong, being influenced by the Jugyeonggongbu theory of Sung Confucianism. Second, Jo Sik took pre-Chin Chinese Confucianism and Sung Confucianism of Song Dynasty as his academic foundation and devoted himself to cultivating the mind and implementing righteousness based on the spirit of Gyeong-Ui rather than analyzing and developing them theoretically. He highlighted that the goal of pursuing reason was to put it to utmost use in daily life, which is possible by lighting up the mind with Gyeong and taking an action for worldly matters with Ui. That is why he decided to live in the mountains and forests, train himself intensely, criticize the contradictions of the times fiercely, and propose specific alternatives for them instead of taking the path of government service in the absurd political reality of the times. Adhering both to Gyeong and Ui will lead to the integration of in and outside, the purification of up and down, and the union of heaven and man, which is the actual implementation of Gyeong-Ui ideology yearned by Jo Sik. In short, Jo Sik’s Gyeong-Ui ideology had pre-Chin Chinese Confucianism as the suzerain on the upside and Sung Confucianism of Song Dynasty as the core on the downside. Even though his Gyeong-Ui ideology remained in the scope of Sung Confucianism in theory, it went beyond Sung Confucian scholars in practice. That is its implication in the history of philosophy.
