신소설의 문학사적 성격 재론 (Sinsosel as a Modern Korean Novel)

초록

이 논문은 신소설의 문학사적 의미를 어떻게 규정할 것인가 하는 문제를 다룬다. 한국소설사에서 신소설은 고전소설에서 현대소설로 변화하는 과정에서 성립된하나의 과도기적 양식으로 그 독자성을 인정받아 왔으나, 신소설의 양식적 성격을규정하는 것은 간단치 않은 문제이다. 기존에 신소설은 소재 측면에서의 ‘새로움’이 그 특징으로 제시되었으나 근본적으로는 서사적 특성의 새로움을 밝힐 필요가있다. 우리는 고전소설과 그 서사적 특성을 비교함으로써 신소설이 그 내면 구조에 현대소설로서 갖추어야 하는 여러 가지 요소를 통합하여 서사화하고 있다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 즉 장르적인 명칭이 아니라 문단적 개념으로서의 ‘신체시’가‘새로운 형태의 시’를 나타내는 것처럼, ‘신소설’도 ‘새로운 소설’이라는 하나의 문단적 개념으로 볼 수 있으며, 현대소설의 범주 안에 포괄되는 것이다.
일반적으로 하나의 문학 형태가 장르적인 위상을 부여받기 위해서는 다양한 경향의 작품과 함께 그 형태를 공유하는 창조적 주체가 폭넓게 존재해야 하며, 그 형태를 향유하는 사회적 기반이 형성되어야만 한다. 신체시라든지 신소설은 이러한조건을 제대로 구비하지 못하고 있기 때문에 그 양식적 독자성을 인정하기 어려운* 서울대학교 국어국문학과 교수6 인문학연구 제17호것이다. 그러므로 신소설이나 신체시와 같은 명칭은 일종의 문단적 개념으로 이해하는 것이 타당할 것이다. 개화계몽시대에 새롭게 등장한 문학양식과 그 장르 분화 현상은 자연스럽게 현대문학의 성립과 그 전개 양상의 첫 단계로 자리잡는다.
개별적인 문학 현상과 그 장르적 속성에 대한 논의가 하나의 문학적 현상에 대한인식론의 근거를 마련하는 것이라면, 다양한 문학 현상을 체계적 질서에 의해 분별해 낼 수 있는 논리성을 확보해야 한다는 것은 당연한 요청이다.
이러한 관점에서 본다면 신소설은 짧은 단계의 서사적 실험을 거쳐 현대소설의확립 단계로 이어진 셈이다. 신소설은 독자적인 문학양식으로 자리잡은 것이 아니라 현대소설의 초기단계에 속하는 것으로 그 의미를 규정할 수 있다. 현대소설의첫 단계에 등장한 신소설은 국문 글쓰기를 통해 일상생활 속에서 살아있는 언어를그대로 묘사해낸 최초의 현대적인 의미의 소설에 해당하는 셈이다.

영어초록

The modern Korean novel as ‘Sinsoseol’ began to appear from the mid‐nineteenth century. With the decline of ‘literature in Chinese’ during the early modern period, a newly popularized Han-geul emerged and became the medium through which the modern novel was established. The mode of Han-geul writing for the modern novel was the key factor enabling it to be read and enjoyed by an expanded popular readership. It could express all possible discursive forms occurring in the people’s daily language life. Through it, the modern novel realized the ideal of “unity between written and spoken languages”, in other words, writing the living language of daily life. A new prose style aesthetic was thus established.
Different from the classical fiction with its narrative structure rooted in mythic imagination, the modern novel represents daily reality through experiential imagination. Based in experiential time, the modern novel gives importance to human life and its meanings. These are the building blocks of the modern narrative. The reality that the modern novel seeks to represent, recognizes the narrative’s demand that the characters in the novel be allowed to be aware of themselves and live the life given them. As they interact with concrete, realistic conditions, the characters come into clearer focus and achieve greater verisimilitude as subjects.
An important characteristic of the modern novel is defined as the discovery of the individual, or the ‘day‐to‐day man’. This is the hero of the modern novel. But this hero’s status is not a lofty one like the classical heroes created by intervention from the divine world; nor has he descended from heaven to live among man in the realm of mortals. By placing the everyday individual as the central figure of the story, the modern hero’s narrative journey is thus fixed, namely, in the pursuit of his own individual fate. The hero of the modern novel maintains a certain distance from everything surrounding him. He is not bound by mythic taboos and incantatory magic. He lives out his destiny within the domain of the day‐to‐day world. His destiny is not revealed to him by a god, but decided by himself alone. In this way, the hero of the modern novel maintains a marked distance from the objects making up the world. In other words, he defines himself as an individual, and sets up his position as the subject of the narrative.
One notable feature of the modern novel’s narrative structure is the reorganization of experiential time. Experiential time concretizes the existences of the protagonists and the progressions of the narrative action. Unlike the classical fiction in which events and actions are arranged in chronological order, the modern novel reconstructs these according to the logic of the narrative’s own unique understanding of the world. In such cases, changes may occur in the narrative structure, and reordering of chronological events becomes possible. This shows the degree to which natural time can be altered by the logic of human consciousness. This betrayal of natural time marked the birth of human defiance of the natural order governed by the realm of the sacred. Seemingly unable to start from the beginning of anything in accordance with experiential time, the modern novel divorced itself from the fantasy and magic of eternity. And the order of the modern narrative, which arrives at some conclusion according to a set progression, is concretely represented in the story.
