‘고대사 파동’과 고조선 역사지도

이 글은 1970년대 중반에서 1980년대에 걸쳐 벌어졌던 ‘고대사 파동’이 이후 중고등학교 교과서의 고조선 서술에 끼친 영향을 고조선 관련 역사지도를 중심으로 살피고, ‘고대사파동’이 再燃된 상황에서 진행 중인 국정 한국사 교과서의 고조선 서술에 대한 우려를 표한 것이다.
1) 1974년 국정 국사교과서가 배포된 후 일부 인사들은 고조선이 역사가 오래 되었고, 방대한 영토를 차지하였음에 불구하고, 그것이 교과서에 반영되지 않았다고 비난하고, 이의 수정을 요구하였다. 하지만 그들이 근거하였던 자료는 그 가치를 의심받는 것들이거나 위조된 것들이었다. 따라서 저들의 주장은 받아들여지지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 저들은 시민들의 민족 감정을 부추기면서, 세력 과시도 마다하지 않는 등 공세를 늦추지 않았다.
2) ‘고대사 파동’이 가열되는 가운데, 1990년 국정 국사 교과서가 새로 편찬되었다. 저들의 비합리적인 주장은 받아들여지지 않았지만, 이를 의식한 것으로 여겨지는 부분도 있었다. 특히 ‘동이족의 분포 지역’과 ‘고조선의 세력 범위’를 표시한 지도가 그러하다고 생각되었다. 고조선이 처음부터 만주와 한반도를 아우르는 넓은 지역을 차지하고 있었다는 저들의 주장과 상통하는 면이 있는 지도라고 판단되는 것이다. 그런데 2011년부터 사용된 검정 교과서에는 ‘고조선의 문화 범위’를 표시한 지도가 실려 있다. 이는 ‘세력 범위’를 ‘문화 범위’로 바꾼 것에 불과한 것이었다. ‘고대사 파동’의 여파를 검인정 교과서에서도 찾을 수 있다.
3) 2010년을 전후하여 ‘고대사 파동’이 재연되었다. 일부 인사들이 고조선을 중심으로 한 ‘영광의 한국고대사’를 내세우면서 시민들의 민족 감정을 부추기고 있다. 이런 상황에서 교육부 장관은 한국사 교과서의 검정 강화 혹은 국정 전환을 추진한다고 하면서 현행 교과서가 갖고 있는 문제 중의 하나로 고대사의 부분의 위축을 들고, 그 확충을 앞으로의 과제로 제시하였다. 현재 편찬 중인 국정 교과서의 고대사 서술 특히 고조선 관련 서술에 국수주의적 시각이 반영될 수도 있다는 점에서 한국고대사학계는 엄중한 도전에 직면하고 있다.

This study set out to investigate the effects of "crisis of ancient history," which took place between the middle 1970s and the 1980s, on the narration of Gojoseon in the middle and high school textbooks with a focus on the historical maps related to Gojoseon, thus raising concerns with the narration of Gojoseon in the government-designated Korean history textbook, which is in progress after the "crisis of ancient history" resumed.
1) After the distribution of a government-designated Korean history textbook in 1974, some figures argued that the textbook did not reflect that Gojoseon had a long history and occupied a vast territory of land, criticizing its writers and demanding for its revision. The materials based on which their arguments were, however, had their values in doubt or had been forged. It is no wonder that their arguments were not accepted, in spite of which they instigated the national sentiment of citizens and made no hesitation to display their power, continuing their attacks.
2) As the "crisis of ancient history" escalated, the government- designated Korean history textbook was re-published in 1990. Even though the textbook did not accept their irrational arguments, some of its content seemed to be conscious of them. The examples include the maps of "distribution areas of Dongyi" and "influential areas of Gojoseon." Those maps are in line with their argument that Gojoseon occupied a vast territory encompassing Manchuria and Korean Peninsula from the beginning. The government-authorized and -endorsed textbooks whose utilization began in 2011 contain the map of "cultural areas of Gojoseon," which was slightly changed from the map of "influential areas of Gojoseon" with "cultural areas" replacing "influential areas." The aftereffect of "crisis of ancient history" was also found in government-authorized and -endorsed textbooks.
3) The "crisis of ancient history" resumed around 2010. Some figures are instigating the national sentiment of citizens, highlighting the "glorious ancient history of Korean" around Gojoseon. Under the situation, Minister of Education announced a plan of reinforcing the examination of Korean history textbooks or converting the old ones into government-designated ones, cited the withdrawal of ancient history parts as one of the problems with the current textbooks, and proposed their expansion as a future task. The academic circles of ancient Korean history are facing a severe challenge in that the government-designated textbook, which is in the process of publication, may reflect the nationalistic view in the parts on ancient history, especially Gojoseon.
