법주사 대웅보전의 조영계획 연구 (A Study on the Construction Plan of Daewoongbojeon(the Main Buddhist Temple) of Beopjusa Temple)

초록

본 연구는 현존하는 불전과 불상 가운데 조성과 관련된 자료가 명확한 법주사대웅보전과 내부에 봉안된 삼존불상을 대상으로 불전과 불상의 조영관계를 살펴본 논문이다. 불전과 불상의 조영관계를 살피기 위해 법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상에 대한 기록 자료의 분석을 선행하여 불전 조영에 있어 불상과의 관계성을 찾아보았다. 이를 바탕으로 법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상의 수치적 분석을 통해 불전과 불상의 조영관계를 확인하였다. 나아가 비슷한 시기 조영된 다른 불전들과의 비교검토를 통해 불전의 조영법식을 살펴보고자 하였다.
법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상의 조성 시기는 기록상의 연대만 놓고 볼 때 상당한 기간의 차이(8년)가 있다. 하지만 조성과 관련된 기록 자료와 다른 불전과의비교 분석을 통해 불전과 불상은 별개가 아닌 하나의 계획 속에서 조성되었으며,그러한 과정 속에 나타나는 조성시기의 차이라는 사실이 확인되었다. 따라서 불전을 조영하는 데 있어 불상이 관련 있다면, 불전과 불상이 하나의 조영계획 속에서 이루어진 경우 불전의 설계 당시부터 불상에 대한 계획이 세워졌을 것으로 판단된다.
하나의 조영계획 속에서 조성된 것으로 확인된 법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상을수치적으로 분석한 결과, 대웅보전의 평면과 입면 공간 그리고 불전 내부에 봉안된 불상이 봉안 위치까지 불상의 높이를 기준으로 한 조영모듈(불상의 높이, 불상+불단의 높이)에 의해 설정됨이 확인되었다. 여기서 흥미로운 사실은 좌상인 불상 높이의 2배 크기가 불전 내부의 입면 최소 공간(대들보까지의 높이)과 일치한다는 점이다. 이는 앉은 키의 2배 크기가 일어섰을 때의 크기와 동일한 인체비례와 같이 좌상인 불상이 일어섰을 때를 고려하여 공간을 설정한 것으로 추정된다.
이러한 설정 방식은 휴먼스케일에 의해 공간이 설정되는 일반 주택과 유사한다.
즉, 이와 같은 방식이 불전의 공간을 설정하는 데 적용된 것은 생명력을 지닌 부처로써 불상을 인식했던 당시 사람들이 부처(불상)가 불전의 공간에 저촉 받지 않도록 하고자 했던 의지가 반영되었기 때문으로 생각된다.
또한 법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상의 조영관계를 통해 불상의 전체높이 설정(불상+불단의 높이)과 불상의 봉안 위치 설정에 황금비율과 같은 비례법칙이 적용됨이 확인되었다. 이러한 비례법칙의 적용은 불전 내에서 불상을 가장 이상적이고 안정된 모습으로 예배자가 바라볼 수 있도록 하기 위함이다.
이처럼 법주사 대웅보전과 삼존불상을 통해 확인된 불전과 불상의 조영관계는조선 후기에 조영된 다른 불전들, 그리고 통일신라시대에 조영된 석굴암에서도유사한 설정방식이 확인된다. 이를 통해 고대부터 불전을 조영하는 데 있어 불상은 가장 중요한 요소로 활용되었던 것으로 판단되며, 이에 불전을 조영하는 데 적용되던 일정한 법식이 존재했을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The study examined the constructional relationship between Buddhisttemples and their statues of the Buddha with a focus on the Daewoongbojeonof Beopjusa Temple and the Buddha Triad enshrined inside it, which provideaccurate data about their construction among existing Buddhist temples andstatues of the Buddha.
Before examining the constructional relationship between Buddhist templesand their statues of the Buddha, this study analyzed records regarding theDaewoongbojeon of Beopjusa Temple and the Buddha Triad. This confirmedthat the gap between the construction periods of the Buddhist temple and thestatue of the Buddha(8 years) did not result from their separate construction,but resulted during their construction process within a single construction plan.
Therefore, if the construction of a Buddhist temple is related to its statues ofthe Buddha, it is highly likely that the plan for the statues were establishedduring the planning stage for the temple, and therefore, the temple and thestatues were created within a single plan. The results of a quantitative analysison the Daewoongbojeon of Beopjusa Temple and the Buddha Triad, whichwere built within a single construction plan confirmed that the temple's planeand elevation and even the statue's enshrined location were set according to aconstruction module (height of the statue, height of the statue and the altar)based on the height of the statue. Here, an interesting fact is that the size thatdoubles the height of the seated statue coincides with the minimal elevationspace (height up to the crossbeam). This suggests that the space was designedby considering the size when the seated statue stood up, similarly to human body proportions in which the standing height nearly doubles the sittingheight. This method is similar to the design method for the space of generalhousing based on human scales. Therefore, this may have reflected the intentof people during the respective period, who recognized Buddhist statues as theBuddha with vitality, and thus did not want the Buddha (its statue) to beconfined by the space of a temple.
In addition, the constructional relationship between the Daewoongbojeon ofBeopjusa Temple and the Buddha Triad confirmed the fact that proportionalrules such as the golden ratio were applied in setting the total height of theBuddhist statue (height of the statue and the altar) and its location forenshrinement. This application of proportional rules was to enableworshippers to look at the Buddhist statue within the Buddhist temple as themost ideal and stable appearance.
As the above shows, the constructional relationship between Buddhisttemples and their statues of the Buddha, which was identified based on theDaewoongbojeon of Beopjusa Temple and the Buddha Triad, is also confirmedby similar design methods exhibited in other Buddhist temples constructed inthe late Joseon Dynasty and Seokguram Grotto built in the period of unitedSilla. This shows that since ancient times, statues of the Buddha had been usedas the most important element in constructing Buddhist temples. Therefore,specific rules applied to the construction of Buddhist temples may haveexisted.
