초록

우리는 그 동안 서구 교회의 약화, 쇠퇴 내지는 몰락에 대해서 많이 들어 왔다. 서구 교회와 제3세계 교회를 수평적으로 비교하기가 어렵지만 우리 한국 교회가 유럽을 이어 미국에서 나타나는 교회의 약화 추세를 따라 가는 듯한 현상을 부인할 수 없을 것 같다. 유럽 교회가 텅 비고 유럽에 있는 신학교들이 학생이 없어 폐쇄되는 추세를 보이고 있고 미국에서도 그런 현상이 나타나기 시작했으니 한국 교회라고 안전하다고 장담할 수는 없을 것 같다.
이러한 상황 가운데 한국 교회 미래 역사와 운명을 결정짓는 다음 세대 청소년 선교는 반기독교 정서가 팽배하며 자본주의와 다원주의와 포스트모더니즘이 지배적인 가치관을 제공하는 사회 문화에서 중차대한 과제임을 인정한다. 종교 다원주의와 혼합주의가 복음의 정체성과 선교를 위협하는 시대에 과연 청소년 선교는 어디로 가야 하는가? ‘웹2.0세대’ 혹은 ‘미전도 세대’로 불리는 청소년 세대를 향한 사역은 과거 어느 때보다도 중요하고 시급한 과제로 떠올랐다. 과거는 현재를 직시하게 하는 거울이요 미래를 열어 가는 자원이라 할 수 있다. 역사가 카(E. H. Carr)는 역사의 개념 정의를 ‘과거와 현재의 만남’이라 했다. 따라서 과거 교회사 속에 나타난 청소년 선교(혹은 사역)를 이해하는 것은 시의적절하며 의미 있는 일로 생각된다.
이러한 시대적 절박한 도전 앞에서 본 논문에서는 과연 우리는 청소년 선교를 어떻게 정의하고, 그 역사의 흐름은 어떠했는지를 알아보고자 했다. 교회사 속에 나타난 청소년 사역에 대한 자료가 빈약하여 제한된 자료로 연구를 하였지만, 본 논문의 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 크게 두 부분으로 나눌 수 있다. 우선 청소년 선교 운동의 역사를 통해서 청소년이 선교의 대상으로서는 물론 선교 주체로서 점점 그 중요성이 더해진다는 점이다. 두 번째 결과는 19세기 이래로 발전되어 온 청소년 선교 운동, 특히 대학생 선교 운동의 역사적 교훈이다. 그 역사적 교훈은 하나님은 구원 역사에 쓰실 사람들을 부르시고 훈련시키셨다는 점, 기독 학생 운동은 세계 선교라는 뚜렷한 이상과 신학적 정체성을 세우고 그것을 이루기 위해 순교 정신으로 헌신했다는 점, 하나님의 역사에 쓰임받는 조직은 성령 충만했고 자발적이며 창조적이며 깨어 있었다는 점, 기독 학생 운동은 복음적인 교회 연합 운동에 적극 동참한 것과 평신도 선교 사역 및 사회 개혁과 문화 창달에 기여한 바가 크다는 점 등이다. 이러한 연구의 결과를 토대로 향후 한국 교회가 청소년 선교에 더 깊은 관심을 가져야 할 것을 제시하고자 하였다.

영어초록

Korea’s population is forecast to decline beginning in 2020 due to its low fertility rate. If the birth rate stays at its current level, it will drain the nation’s labor pool and create demand for an improved social safety net to cope with the aging population. Not just social problem, but also the challenge to church and mission will be caused due to the declining population, especially because the children and youth population will be reduce rapidly. More critical point for the future Korean church is so to speak ‘the unreached generation’. This means the new generation, who are no more confess christian faith, even though their parents are committed christians. That’s why we have to focus on the theme of youth ministry.
In this research I am studying the historical context of youth ministry, because I want to find out how youth ministry be developed through the christian and missionary history in oder to help church minister and youth worker understand how youth ministry should be defined theologically and so that they facilitate their youth ministry more efficiently and effectively.
The way we outline the historical context of youth ministry is greatly dependent on how we define youth and youth ministry. It is common that youth means teenager, but this research takes the position that youth is to designated as the period of human development sociologically defined as adolescence. For the practical purpose this research takes teenager and student as youth. It also accepts that youth ministry could be defined both youth evangelism and youth education. Youth ministry has multi-dimensional work, on the one hand, it does intentionally evangelize youth and student, on the other hand, it give commitment to the educational components. Youth ministry has to be both missional and educational - concerned with both evangelism and discipleship. Although the history in a sense shows the dichotomy between missions and education, evangelism and discipleship, it is false theological dichotomy. The purpose of youth ministry cannot be one-sided. While it is important to understand this holistic perspective as it is revealed in the christian history, it is equally important to reflect on the impact this perspective has on contemporary youth ministry and on the future history of youth ministry.
This research is composed of two main chapters. At first, it deals the history of youth ministry as evangelism and education. Secondly, the history of the christian student missionary movement is handled as the pivotal power of the modern protestant missionary movement. The limitations of this research is that the history of youth ministry is to be studied mainly by focusing on the English and American missions. Next, the section of the history of youth ministry as evangelism and education use Mark W. Cannister’s research, “Youth Ministry’s Historical Context: The Education and Evangelism of Young People,” (in : Kenda Creasy Dean, Chap Clark, David Rahn(ed.), Starting Right : thinking theologically about youth ministry, Grand Rapids, MI : Zondervan Publishing House, 2001, 77-90) as the primary source.
The main results of this research are summarized, firstly, youth is not just the object of youth ministry, but also its subject. secondly, youth as the agent of God’s mission is filled with Holy Spirit and trained as disciple, and committed themselves totally and voluntarily. Youth ministry has great impact on the formation of the ecumenical movement, the lay missionary work, and social, cultural renewal.
