淸心丸으로 읽은 燕行의 文化史 (Cultural History of the Diplomatic Envoy Displayed in Cheongsimhwan)

초록

본고는 李肇源의 「淸心丸歌」를 바탕으로 관련 연행록 자료를 보충하여, 청심환의 유행과 품귀현상을 살펴보았다. 청심환은 심장의 열을 풀어주고 마음을 안정시키는 처방으로 쓰였고, 中風으로 말을 하지 못하는 증상이나, 어질어질하면서 속에 煩熱이 나고 갑갑한 증상을 치료하는데도 널리 사용하는 약재이다. 그런데, 조선후기 燕行錄 관련 자료를 살펴보면, 조선에서 제조한 청심환이 도리어 원산지 중국에서 유행하고 품귀현상을 일으킬 정도로 대단한 인기를 누린다. 심지어 중국 勅使가 조선을 방문하여 직접 청심환을 요청하는 사건이 있을 정도였다. 이는 조선의 종이․부채․청심환이 중국에서 高麗紙․高麗扇․高麗丸으로 각광을 받은 사실과 관련이 깊다.
조선 청심환은 원산지 중국뿐 아니라 외국에서조차 각광을 받던 대표적인 물품이다. 따라서 조선 사행은 禮單과 情費의 용도로 사용할 뿐 아니라, 중국 명소를 방문할 때 面幣․面皮 명목으로 뇌물로 주거나 중국 문인들과 교유할 때 호의에 대한 답례로 혹은 감사한 마음으로 선물하였다. 더욱이 중국에서 청심환의 流行과 品貴현상은 가짜 또는 저질 청심환이 널리 유통․매매되어, 肉眼․觸診․分解 등의 방법으로 청심환의 진위를 鑑別하는 상황까지 초래한다. 이조원의 표현을 빌린다면, 연행의 현장에서 청심환은 무소불위의 신통력을 여지없이 발휘한다. 따라서 청심환은 조선시대 연행의 문화사를 추적할 수 있는 핵심적인 키워드이다.

This article contemplates the popularity of Cheongsimhwan and the scarcity phenomenon by supplementing the pertinent data on Yeonhaeng-rok (record of diplomatic envoy) on the basis of 「Cheongsimhwan-ga」 of Lee Jo-won. Cheongsimhwan is a herbal material that was used in prescriptions to lower the heat of the heart and stabilize the state of the mind. It was widely used for treating the symptoms of difficulties with speech caused by stroke, dizziness owing to overheating of the body’s organs and suffocating conditions. However, when looking into the data related to Yeonhaeng-rok in the later Joseon, it is seen that Cheongsimhwan produced in Joseon enjoyed great popularity in China, the original place of such production, triggering the scarcity phenomenon. It had such great popularity that, even the envoy from China visited Joseon and personally requested for Cheongsimhwan. This is closely related to the fact that papers, hand-held fans and Cheongsimhwan of Joseon were widely popular in China as Goryeo paper, Goryeo fan and Goryeo tablet.
Cheongsimhwan of Joseon was a representative product that was under the spotlight not only at the original place of production in China but also in other foreign countries. Therefore, the diplomatic envoy of Joseon used it for ritual ceremonies and maintenance as well as gifts of appreciation or reciprocal expression for favorable gestures. It was also used for giving bribes in the name of amicable relationship when visiting well-known places in China or when making friends with scholars of China as return for favorable action. As a result of the wide distribution and sales of fake or low quality Cheongsimhwan, owing to the popularity and scarcity of Cheongsimhwan in China, the Chinese often had to determine the genuineness of Cheongsimhwan by way of visual inspection, sensory inspection or disintegration. To quote Lee Jo-won, Cheongsimhwan in the field of Yeonhaeng asserts the unprecedented insight in full detail. Therefore, Cheongsimhwan is a core part of the keyword that allows us to trace the cultural history of Yeonhaeng under the Joseon Dynasty.
