아버지에 대한 기억의 지도 - 정조의 사도세자 추숭 작업과 事蹟圖 (The Map of Memory from a Father - King Jeongjo's Commemorative Project and Paintings on Historic Sites of Crown Prince Sado)

초록

정조는 재위기간 동안 아버지 사도세자의 지위를 높이기 위한 추복사업을 다양하게 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 그 중에서 사적도가 남아있는 사도세자의 사당과 무덤인 景慕宮과 顯隆園, 태를 묻은 胎室과 온행 사적, 靈槐臺를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 사도세자 사적 정비 사업의 결과로 생산된 사적도는 단지 사적의 모습을 재현할 뿐 아니라, 각 사적의 의미와 의도를 압축적으로 전달하였다.
사도세자의 경모궁과 현륭원 사적은 가장 권위 있는 전례서의 도설 형식을 따랐다. 왕실의 위계를 어기지 않으면서도 사도세자의 권위를 최대한 높이려는 정조의 치밀한 논리와 계획은 절제된 의궤의 규범을 지키면서도 구체적이고 실증적으로 표현된 도설로 뒷받침되었다.
사도세자의 태실은 처음으로 국왕이 아닌 자의 태실이 가봉된 사례이며, <태봉도> 역시 처음 그려진 것으로 추정된다. 지방 화원이 그린 사도세자의 태봉도는 왕실의 의도를 충분히 드러내지 못하였다. 그러나 지방에서 올라온 보고 자료에 불과한 태봉도를 족자에 장황하여 태실비 탁본과 함께 진상하게 한 것은 그 자체로 사도세자의 가봉태실을 왕실 사적으로 공인하고자 했다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
사도세자의 영괴대는 조정에서 편찬한 공식 기록물과 지방에서 올린 보고서 성격의 그림 뿐 아니라 국가에서 개인에게 배포한 기념물로도 그려졌다. 이처럼 사도세자의 사적들은 단지 기존의 전통 안에서 승격될 뿐 아니라, 흩어진 기억을 수합하여 국가에서 공식화하고 이를 다시 개인에게 유포함으로써 지속적으로 발명되었다.
이처럼 사도세자의 사적도가 공적인 기록에 한정되지 않고 민간의 기억에까지 확장되는 것은 사도세자의 문제를 접근하는 정조의 태도에 시사점을 던져준다. 정조는 사도세자의 비행은 인정하면서도 그것이 단지 병(광증)이었는데 억울하게 역모로 사사되었음에 깊이 슬퍼했다. 정조가 집착하였던 것은 사도세자의 국왕 추존보다 그의 인간적인 복권이었던 것이다. 정조는 공식적인 왕실 사적도를 통해 사도세자의 지위를 추숭하는 한편 새로운 사적의 발명을 통해 아버지에 대한 기억을 쇄신하고자 하였다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

King Jeongjo(r. 1776-1800) proceeded numerous tasks on reinstating the position of promoting his father, Crown Prince Sado(1735-1762) during his reign. Among these projects, this paper discusses King Jeongjo’s monumentalization of historic sites related to Crown Prince Sado: 1) Sado’s shrine, Gyeongmogung, 2) Sado’s tomb, Hyunryungwon, 3) chamber that enshrines placentas of the royal family, Placenta Chamber, and 4) Yeonggoedae, the site of the Sacred Locust tree in Onyang Palace. The pictures of the historical sites (Sajeokdo) were the results of the restoration projects of the historical landmark of Sado. This study focuses on the representations of these historic sites, which not only reproduced the appearances of the remains, but addressed significances of the sites and the intention of King Jeongojo’s projects.
Gyeongmogung and Hyunryungwon of Sado followed the illustration of the most authoritative book. Without breaking the rank, King Jeongjo’s elaborate logic and plan to raise authority of Sado kept the norms of the restrained books, yet it supported detailed and objective illustration.
Placenta Chamber of Sado was the first time to allow the chamber to hold a placenta of someone else who was not a king, and Sado’s Taebongdo, the painting of Placenta Chamber, was also the earliest example of its kinds. Unlike the court painters, the artist from the province who was selected to depict the placenta chamber on the spot, was not able to fully deliver the style and message of the Royal family. Taebongdo could have been considered as kind of a report material painted by provincial artist. However, the significant way of enshrining the Taebongdo - mounting it as a scroll and offering to the king it along with the rubbing of the placenta chamber stele written by king himself - enabled Sado’s placenta chamber recognized as an authoritative site of the royal family.
Yeonggoedae, the site of the Sacred Locust tree in Onyang is a kind of discovered remains of Sado. According to the story handed down among people in Onyang Province, Sado planted three locust trees in the garden of Onyang Palace when he visited Onyang for his spa treatment. It is hard to find anything related to this story from the official records of the time. King Jeongjo had his retainer to visit Onyang, gathered tales from the people, and awarded all who engaged in restoring the site and those who travelled with Sado to Onyang 45 years ago. There are several different versions of the Yeonggoedae: a report illustration from the province, an official documentary compiled by the royal court, and a royal gift bestowed to the contributor of the project. These versions represent different function of the Yeonggeodae painting in each phase of the project. Yeonggeodae paintings not only severed their roles as documentation and memorial gift, but also certified the place of folk tale as official royal site.
It implies to King Jeongjo’s morals when it comes to approaching the importance of Sado, considering the fact that historical landmarks of Sado were not limited to official documents but broadened among people’s memories. King Jeongjo was always deeply in sorrow even though he admitted a misdeed of Sado; it was kind of an illness (insanity) and that Sado was unfairly killed with a conspiracy. What King Jeongjo obsessed of Sado was the humane reinstatement, rather than attainment of the King. Through official paintings of historical landmark of the royal family and the monumentalization, King Jeongjo respected Sado’s position, and reformed the memories of his father through discovery of the new historical landmark.
