북한 문학사와 시조 (Literary History of the North Korea and Their Viewpoing about Sijo)

초록

주체사상 등장 이전의 『조선문학사』(리응수), 『조선문학통사(상·하)』(과학원 언어문학연구소 문학연구실) 등과 주체사상 등장 이후의 『조선문학사(1～5)』(사회과학원 문학연구소), 『조선문학사(1～15)』(사회과학출판사 외) 등을 대상으로 북한의 시조관을 살펴본 것이 본 연구다. 북한의 이념이나 미학은 주체사상의 등장을 경계로 그 앞 시기와 뒷 시기가 구분된다. 맑스·레닌주의에 입각한 사회주의적 사실주의는 전자의 경향이고, 주체적 사실주의는 후자의 경향이다.
북한의 학자들은 조선조 양반 사대부 혹은 그들의 문학에 대하여 비판적이었으나, 피지배 계층이나 진취적인 양반들이 성취한 미학의 전환만큼은 긍정적으로 보고 있었다. 생활에 밀착된 노래, 조국 산천의 아름다움을 구가한 노래, 남녀 간의 애정이나 인정세태 등을 ‘사실적으로’ 그려낸 노래들은 어느 시기에나 찬양되거나 권장되었다. 주체사상 등장 이전 시기의 성향은 이념 중시의 해석 틀과 함께 문학사적 사실의 확인과 해석의 객관성을 얼마간 유지하려는 노력을 보여주었다고 본다.
특히 조선조 후기에 등장한 가집이 歌曲本임을 전제로 의미를 추출하고자 한 점, 서민계층의 구전민요로부터 받은 영향이 전면에 드러나 있는 점, 『남훈태평가』와 같은 가집의 작품들에 종장 끝 귀가 생략되어있는 사실을 근거로 시조창법을 거론한 점, 가곡의 체제와 풍도·형용 등을 들면서 당시의 가집들이 歌譜에 중점을 둔 편찬임을 지적한 점, 이 시기 시조들의 詩語에서 口語化의 경향을 지적했다는 점 등은 시조에 대한 남한 학자들의 관점과 크게 다르지 않고, 오히려 어떤 점에서는 훨씬 객관 타당한 측면이 발견되기도 한다.
주체적 사실주의로 전환된 주체사상 이후 시기의 관점은 이전의 사회주의적 사실주의와 약간의 차이를 보여주는 게 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 이 시기의 저작에서는 시조작품을 미적 소산 아닌 계급투쟁의 산물로 보았기 때문에 지배계층에 대한 적개심을 적지 않게 노출시켰다. 다시 말하여 시조문학사 초·중기의 작품들에 대한 해석은 남한 학자들의 관점과 크게 다른 모습을 보여준다는 것이다. 그러나 후기 작품들로 갈수록 남·북한의 시각차가 좁혀지는 모습을 발견할 수 있는데, 그것은 조선조 후기의 체제나 사회의 모순이 확대되어 남·북한 어느 관점에서 보더라도 일치되는 해석을 도출할 수밖에 없었기 때문일 것이다.
사실 중세적 질서의 해체기인 조선조 후기 평민시인들의 미의식은 북한 지배층이나 학자들의 구미에 맞는 것이었다. 상품 화폐경제의 발달과 신분관계의 변화에 따라 직업적 예술인들의 활동이 활발해졌다는 것, 계층 간·都農 간의 상호교류가 긴밀해지고 민요·판소리·시조·가사·잡가 등 다양한 예술형태들이 서로 영향을 주고받으며 교류관계가 강화되었다는 등의 해석 결과를 보여주었다.
시조가 조선조 서정문학의 대표 장르였던 만큼 서사문학이나 목적문학인 악장 등에 비해 이념적으로 해석될 수 있는 여지는 상대적으로 적었다고 할 수 있다. 주체사상 이후 시조에 대한 해석에서 계급의식이 강하게 드러나긴 하지만, 그 해석의 결과 자체에 공감할만한 부분이 많은 것도 시조가 갖고 있는 서정적 본질 덕분이다. 앞으로 남·북한 간의 시각차를 좁힐 수 있는 단서가 시조에서 마련될 수 있으리라고 보는 것도 바로 그런 이유에서다.

This study was producted from researching about North Korea's viewpoint of Sijo centering around ≪Literary History of Joseon≫(by Lee, Eung-Soo), ≪A Complete Literary History of Joseon≫(by Literary Research Team in Institute of Social Science) before appearance of the Juche Sasang(ideology of self-direction) and ≪Literary History of Joseon(1～5)≫(by Literary Research Team in Institute of Social Science), another ≪Literary History of Joseon≫ after appearance of Juche Sasang. North Korea's ideology or aesthetics can be divided into proceeding part and the latter. Social realism based on Marx-Leninism is tendency of the former, Juche realism is tendency of the latter.
North Korean scholars have criticized Joseon Dynasty's governing class or their literature. However, they thought the turnover the aesthetics accomplished by most of the members belonging to governed class or some progressive governing class as positive phenomenon. They always have praised or recommended the songs close to every day real lives, songs to glorify their country's beauty, songs to depict affection between male and female, songs to express human feelings and the way of the world actually. The scholars before appearance of Juche Sasang had an analytic frame to take a serious view of ideology, and did effort to maintain objectivity of their interpretation. Their viewpoint was not different from that of South Korean scholars. We can find out rather objective side in the North Korean scholars' opinions than that of South Korean scholars.
The viewpoint about Sijo after alteration to Juche realism was a little different from the social realism in the former times. They disclosed not a few hostility to the governing class, because they regarded Sijo works as not aesthetic outcome but a product of class strife. As it were, they show much different viewpoint about early and middle period's Sijo works from South Korean scholars. However, we can find out tendency for difference of viewpoint to narrow toward the latter period. It seems the reason why later Joseon period's governing system or social contradiction enlarged to a big scale, whoever regardless of ideology cannot help drawing a consistent analysis.
As a matter of fact, aesthetics of the later Joseon period's common poets fit to aesthetic taste of North Korean governing class or scholars. Following development of commodity-monetary economy and change of social ranks, action of professional artists became activated. Naturally, mutual exchanges between urban and rural community became close. Diverse art forms like folks songs, Pansori, Sijo, Gasa, and Japga got a lot of mutual influence.
Sijo is a representative genre of lyrical poetry in literary history of Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, it's space to be interpreted ideologically rather than the other genres like that epic poetry and Akjang was small. North Korean literary historians disclosed consciousness of social ranks. Sijo has many parts to be sympathized thanks to its lyrical substance. It is the reason why we can get a clue to narrow difference of viewpoint between South and North Korean scholars in the future.
