형용사를 구성 요소로 포함하지 않은 합성 형용사의 특성 연구 (A Study on Compound Adjectives that Do Not Contain Adjectives as Constituents in Korean)

초록

본 논문에서는 『표준』에 등재된, 형용사가 구성 요소로 포함되지 않은 합성 형용사(무형용사 합성 형용사) 126개를 대상으로 그 유형과 의미적 특징 등을 살펴보았다. 먼저 구성 요소들의 문법 범주가 분명한 경우와 그렇지 못한 경우로 나눌 수 있었다. 전자의 경우 ‘명사+동사, 어근+동사, 부사+동사, 동사+동사, 동사+보조 동사, 의존 명사+동사’로, 후자의 경우 선행 요소가 불분명한 경우, 후행 요소가 불분명한 경우와 선․후행 요소가 모두 불분명한 경우로 나누어 보았다.
다음으로 무형용사 합성 형용사의 의미와 각 구성 요소들의 의미적 연관성에 따라 그것이 분명한 경우와 그렇지 못한 경우가 있었다. 후자는 다시 선행 요소 또는 후행 요소의 의미적 연관성이 불분명한 경우, 선․후행 요소의 의미적 연관성이 불분명한 경우가 있었다.
마지막으로 이들을 바탕으로 하여 무형용사 합성 형용사의 문법 범주 결정 양상에 대해 다음과 같은 가설로 살펴보았다. 첫째는 문법 범주적 측면에서 구성 요소 중 어느 하나가 형용사로서의 특성을 나타낸다는 것이다. 둘째는 의미적 측면에서 선․후행 요소의 의미가 전체 무형용사 합성 형용사와 연관성이 없는 경우에는 의미적 전이와 관련된 측면이 있다는 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, I examined the types and semantic characteristics of 126 compound adjectives that do not include adjectives as components(I call these as “adjectiveless compound adjectives”), which are listed in the 『Standard Korean Dictionary』. First of all, depending on the grammatical categories of the constituents, they could be divided into two types where the grammatical categories of the constituents were clear and where they were not. The former were divided into “noun+verb, root of a word+verb, adverb+verb, verb+verb, verb+auxiliary verb, dependent noun+verb”, and the latter were divided into types where the preceding element was unclear, where the succeeding element was unclear, and where both the preceding and succeeding elements were unclear.
Next, depending on the meaning of components and the semantic association of the “adjectiveless compound adjectives”, there were types where the semantic association between the components was clear and types where it was not. The latter was again the type where the semantic association between the preceding or succeeding element was unclear, and the type where the semantic association between the preceding and succeeding elements was unclear.
Finally, based on these, I examined determinants of the grammatical category of the “adjectiveless compound adjectives” with the following hypotheses: First, in terms of grammatical categories, one of the components exhibits the characteristic of an adjective. Second, in terms of semantics, if the meaning of the preceding and succeeding elements is not related to the “adjectiveless compound adjectives”, it may be related to semantic transfer.
