해방전후의 현대문학사 연구 - 『신문학사』(임화), 『조선신문학사조사』(백철), 『현대조선 문학사』(박영희)에 사용된 ‘양식’·‘사조’·‘사상’ 개념을 중심으로 (Before and After of Libertation in the Studies on the History of the Korean Modern Literature)

초록

해방 전후 발표된 한국현대문학사 연구는 한국 문학사의 시대를 규정하는 방식을 제시했다. 또한 현대문학사의 변화 양상을 사유하기 위해 ‘양식’, ‘사조’, ‘사상’과 같은 개념들을 정립했다. 이를 통해 문학사 연구자들은 전통과 당대(當代)의 관계, 제국 일본을 경유하여 들어온 서구문화와 식민지 조선문화의 관계에 대해 끊임없이 질문을 던졌다. 한편으로 그 작업은 해방 전후의 현대문학사 연구자들이 1930년대 후반의 파시즘적 분위기와 대면했던 양상들을 보여주고 있기도 하다.
문학사 서술 과정에서 현대문학사 연구자들의 우선적으로 관심을 드러낸 시기는 개항 이후 서구 문명이 유입되던 19세기 후반부터 20세기 초반이었다. 임화는 『신문학사』에서 이 시기를 ‘과도기’로 규정하며 ‘구시대와 신시대’, ‘전통과 외래’의 경계를 탐색하려 했다. ‘과도기’라는 말의 이러한 사용법은 ‘양식’ 개념과도 맞닿아 있었다. 임화는 ‘양식’ 개념을 통해 시민적 문화가 조선 사회에 어떻게 뿌리내리게 되었는가를 근원적으로 살펴보려 했다.
이러한 임화의 문제의식은 해방 직후 집필된 백철의 『조선신문학사조사』와 박영희의 『현대조선문학사』에는 상당 부분 계승되지 않았다. 백철은 임화가 사용했던 ‘과도기’, ‘양식’과 같은 개념을 ‘개화기’, ‘사조’ 등의 용어로 대체한다. 임화는 시민적 문화가 조선사회에 형성될 수 있었던 지반을 탐색하려한 반면, 백철은 조선사회에 유입된 외래사조의 다층적 내용을 정리하고 소개하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.
또한 백철은 ‘근대’와 ‘현대’를 구분한 후 조선문학의 현대는 프롤레타리아운동이 형성되었던 1923년부터 시작된다고 주장한다. 이 시기부터 백철은 조선 신문학에 세계사조와 흐름을 같이 하는 주조(主潮)가 형성되었다고 보고 있다. 그리고 ‘주조’가 상실된 1932,33년을 전후로 세계 각국의 문단에 불안과 위기의식이 싹트게 된 양태를 서술하고 있다. 『조선신문학사조사』의 의의는 백철이 ‘현대’라고 지칭한 시기, 즉 1930년부터 해방 직전까지의 문단 상황을 밀도 있게 증언하고 있는 데 있다.
반면 박영희의 경우에는 ‘근대’라는 용어를 사용하지 않은 채 ‘조선문학의 현대’를 포괄적으로 규정하고 있다. 박영희는 ‘조선문학의 현대’를 규정지을 때 조선어문을 사용하게 된 양태와 민족적 수난의 상황을 중요하게 생각하고 있다. 조선어와 민족의식을 부각시켰기에 박영희는 임화 및 백철과는 달리 세계사조 및 일본문단이 조선문학에 미친 영향에 대해 깊이 있게 탐색하고 있지 않다. 그 대신 박영희는 문학사 서술 과정에서 ‘사상성’이라는 용어를 부각시킨다. 박영희에게 ‘사상성’은 곧 조선민족의 정치적 각성과 맞물려 싹트게 된 민족 감정을 의미했다. 박영희의 『현대조선문학사』는 민족의 위기/극복 과정에서 형성되는 동류의 민족감정을 부각시키는 데 초점을 맞춘 대신, ‘네이션(nation)’ 서사로 수렴되지 않는 다층적 영역을 문학사 서술에서 배재하고 있다.

영어초록

Studies on modern Korean literature history were published before and after the liberation, and they presented the ways to define the era of the Korean literature history. In addition, some concepts such as ‘form’, ‘trends’ and ‘thoughts’ were established to contemplate the aspects of changes in modern literature history. Through this, those who studied literature history continued to ask questions about the relationship between tradition and trends of the age, and the relationship between western literature introduced through the Imperial Japan and colonial Chosun literature.
In particular, researchers of modern literature history focused on the period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century in which western civilization was introduced after the opening of a port. Lim, Hwa defined this period as ‘transition period’ and tried to explore the boundary of ‘old era and new era’ and ‘tradition and foreign culture‘ in <New literature history>. Use of the term of ‘transition period’ met the concept of ‘form’. Lim, Hwa fundamentally examined how civil culture took root in the Chosun society through the concept of ‘form’.
Lim, Hwa’s critical minds were not substantially inherited in “investigation of Chosun new literature history” written by Baik, Cheol and “Chosun modern literature history” written by Park, Young-hee after the liberation. Baik, Cheol replaced terms of ‘transition period’ and ‘form’ which Lim, Hwa used with ‘the time of enlightenment’ and ‘trends’. While Lim, Hwa tried to explore the grounds in which civil culture was formed in Chosun society, Baik, Cheol was concentrated to summarize and introduce multi-layered contents of foreign trends introduced in Chosun society.
In addition, Baik, Cheol claimed that modern Chosun literature started in 1923 when the proletarian movement was formed after he classified the period into ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ times. Baik, Cheol thought that the main trend was formed in Chosun new literature sharing the flow of global trends. In addition, he described that anxiety and awareness of crisis sprang up before and after 1932 and 1933 when a ‘main trend’ was lost. “Investigation of Chosun new literature history” was significant, because he described the detailed situations of literary world during the period from 1930s to the liberation.
On the other hand, Park, Young-hee comprehensively defined ‘Contemporary times of Chosun literature’ without using a term of ‘modern’. When Park, Young-hee defined ‘Contemporary times of Chosun literature’, he thought that aspects and situations of national ordeal using Korean education were important. Unlike Lim, Hwa and Baik, Cheol, Park, as Young-hee highlighted Korean language and national awareness, he did not deeply explore the effects of world trends and Japanese literary circles on Chosun literature. Instead, he highlighted the term of ‘thought’ in the process of description of literature history. He defined the term of ‘thought’ as the national feeling which sprang together with political awakening of Korean people. In “Chosun modern literature history”, he excluded multi- layered areas which did not converge into ‘nation’ from the description of literature history rather than being focused on national emotion formed in the process of overcoming the crisis of the nation.
