양양 낙산사 동종 보살상에 대한 회화사적 고찰 (The Bodhisattva image on the surface of the Naksansa Temple Bell)

초록

이 논문은 조선 전기 왕실에서 발원하여 주성된 낙산사 동종 종신에 표현된 보살입상에 대한 회화사적 고찰이다. <낙산사종>은 1469년 왕실 발원으로 제작된 동종으로서 종신의 상단에 부조로 표현된 보살입상은 조선 전기 도화서 화원인 김중경과 이장손이 그린 것이다. 이처럼 도화서 화원이 제작에 동원되어 선묘의 보살입상 부조는 정교하고 세련된 표현을 특징으로 하며 조형적으로 우수하고 격조 높은 경지를 보여주었다.
<낙산사종> 보살입상은 늘씬한 신체 비례에 방형에 가까운 상호와 또렷한 이목구비의 표현을 보인다. 연꽃 대좌 위에 두 발을 딛고 두 손을 모아 합장 자세를 하고 있다. 화염보주와 영락으로 장식된 화려한 보관을 착용하고, 당당하게 넓은 어깨에 천의를 걸치고 영락 장식과 조백 등 화려한 치장을 더하였으며, 흩날리는 천의에서는 동세가 느껴진다. <낙산사종>보살입상의 양식 특징을 불교 회화와 비교 고찰하여 그것이 고려말 불화의 전통을 계승한 것이기도 하고 동시기 왕실 발원 불화에서 공유되고 있는 것을 확인하였다.
<낙산사종> 보살입상은 동시기에 제작된 왕실발원 동종인 <흥천사종>과 <봉선사종> 보살입상과 함께 화원의 능숙한 필치로 구현된 수준 높은 인물화 양식을 보인다는 점에서 공통된다. 하지만 제작에 임한 화원의 개인 양식 차이 또한 살필 수 있다는 점에서 회화사적으로 흥미있는 자료라 할 수 있다. 특히 <낙산사종> 보살상은 이상적이고 안정된 조형과 시원스러운 힘찬 선묘로 완성된 기품있는 보살상으로서, 독보적 수준을 보여주는 가장 우수한 작품이라 보았다. 이에 주도적 역할을 한 화원은 이장손이었을 것으로 보았으며 특히 동종의 제작 공정과 재료의 성질을 잘 이해하여 이에 적합한 표현을 창출하였다는 점을 주목하였다.

영어초록

This paper studies the artistic style of the Bodhisattva image on the Naksansa Temple Bell from the early Joseon Dynasty. The Naksansa Temple Bell was cast in 1469 under the royal patronage, and the Bodhisattva image, cast in relief on the side of the bronze bell, was designed by Kim Jung-gyeong and Yi Jang-son, who were court painters serving in Dohwaseo, the Painting Academy. The participation of court painters in the production of Buddhist Bell led to a highly refined and sophisticated artistic expression, demonstrating excellence in both form and composition.
The Bodhisattva image on the Naksansa Temple Bell exhibits a slender and well- proportioned figure with a square shaped face and clear-cut features. The figure stands on a lotus pedestal with hands clasped in prayer. The Bodhisattva wears a lavish crown adorned with Cinta-mani and beads, along with a gracefully draped robe over broad shoulders, featuring intricate ornamentation. The flowing drapery imparts a sense of movement. By comparing the stylistic features of the Bodhisattva on the Naksansa Temple Bell with those depicted in Buddhist paintings, it can be confirmed that it inherits the tradition of the Buddhist paintings from Goryeo Dynasty and shares common characteristics with those from the early Joseon dynasty.
The Bodhisattva image on the Naksansa Temple Bell, along with that on other contemporary royal court-sponsored temple bells such as the Heungcheonsa Temple Bell and the Bongseonsa Temple Bell, showcases a high level of figurative artistry executed by the court painters. However, the differences in the individual artistic styles of the painters involved in their creation also offer intriguing insights for art historical analysis. In particular, the Bodhisattva image on the Naksansa Temple Bell stands out as an exceptional work with its idealized and stable form, as well as its refreshing and powerful line work. It is considered one of the most outstanding pieces of its kind. The leading painter in this project is believed to have been Yi Jang-son, who demonstrated a deep understanding of the production process and the nature of the bronze casting, creating an appropriate and exceptional style of expression.
