내장사의 유래와 ‘내장산 내장사’ 인식 (The Origin of Naejangsa Temple and Recognition of Naejangsa Temple in Mt. Naejangsan)

초록

내장산(內藏山)에는 영은사(靈隱寺)와 내장사(內藏寺), 그리고 벽련사(碧蓮寺)라는 사찰이 있었다. 영은사라는 사찰의 유래는 정확하지 않다. 다만, 구전과 약간의 사료에 의하면, 백제의 승려 영은(靈隱)이 창건한 사찰에서 고려의 지엄(智嚴)이 종파(宗派)를 새로 만들었다고 보는 것이다. 내장산에는 내장사라는 사찰이 언제부터 있었을까? 전언과 약간의 사료에 근거해, 적어도 16세기 전반의 내장산에는 ‘영은사’와 ‘내장사 혹은 백련사’가 함께 있었음이 분명하다.
‘내장산 승도탁란사건’ 이후의 내장산에는 승려 희묵(希黙)이 중창한 내장사가 있었으나, 정유재란(丁酉再亂) 때 불에 타버렸다. 그 이후, 예전처럼 거찰(巨刹)은 아닐지라도 오늘날의 내장사 정도의 사찰이 중건되었을 것이고, 중건된 장소는 지금의 내장사와 벽련암 자리였을 것이다. 조선 후기에도 지금의 내장사를 ‘영은사’라 칭하였다. 하지만 후대로 내려오면서 ‘내장사’라 칭한 사례도 나오는 등 내장사와 영은사는 병칭 또는 혼칭돼 왔다.
억불정책으로 폐허가 되다시피 한 내장산의 사찰을 다시 복원한 이는 승려 백학명(白鶴鳴)이다. 1920년대에 지금의 벽련암 자리에서 복원 불사를 하면서 사명을 ‘벽련사’라 하였다. 하지만 벽련사의 공식 명칭 또는 대외적인 명칭은 ‘내장사’였다. 당시 조선총독부와 한국불교계에서는 내장산의 사찰을 ‘내장사’라 칭했고, 최남선은 지금의 내장사 대웅전 자리의 대웅전을 ‘영은사 대웅전’이라 칭하였다. 이렇듯, 기록하는 주체에 따라서 벽련사, 내장사, 영은사 등으로 칭하였다.
1938년에 승려 매곡(梅谷)은 지금의 내장사 대웅전 자리에다 대웅전을 서둘러 복원하였다. 복원한 사찰의 이름은 ‘내장사’였다. 이때부터 ‘내장사’라는 사명이 갖는 공간적 범위는 오늘날과 같아졌다. 이전에는 내장산의 모든 사찰을 지칭했거나 또는, 오늘날의 벽련암만을 지칭하였다. 하지만, 1938년 대웅전 개축을 계기로 내장사가 지칭하는 곳은 오늘날의 내장사 대웅전을 중심으로 한 공간이었다. 그러나 지역사회에서는 여전히 영은사, 내장사, 그리고 벽련사 등으로 병칭 또는 혼칭하였다. 그런데 매곡이 지은 대웅전마저 한국전쟁으로 불에 타버렸다.
한국전쟁이 끝난 1950년대에 지금의 내장사 대웅전 자리에다 보천교(普天敎) 보화문(普化門)의 자재로 대웅전이 신축되었다. 이때부터 지역사회의 ‘내장산 내장사’라는 내재된 인식은 고착화에 이르렀다. ‘내장산 내장사’는 하나의 관용구처럼 지역사회는 물론 사회 일반에게까지 회자되면서 ‘내장산 내장사’는 ‘정읍(井邑)’과 ‘가을 단풍’, 그리고 ‘고찰(古刹)’을 연상케 하는 기제로 작동하였다.

영어초록

Mt. Naejangsan had Yeongeunsa Temple, Naejangsa Temple and Byeokryonsa Temple. The origin of Yeongeunsa Temple was not clearly known. However, according to the oral tradition and some historical records, it was assumed that it was derived from a religious sect made by a Goguryeo monk named Jium in the temple a Baekje monk named Yeongeun founded. From when has the Naejangsa Temple been in Mt. Naejangsan? Based on the oral tradition and historical records, it was certain that Yeongeunsa Temple, Naejangsa Temple or Baekryonsa Temple were in Mt. Naejangsan at least in the early 16th century.
After the ‘Naejangsan Seungdo-Takran Incident,’ there was a temple named Naejangsa rebuilt by a monk named Heemook, but it was burned down during the Jeongyujaeran. Then, it was assumed that a temple with the same size of the present Naejangsa would be rebuilt at the place where the present Naejangsa and Byeokryonam Monk Cell were placed. In the late Joseon Period, the present Naejangsa Temple was called as Yeongeunsa Temple. However, coming down from generation to generation, Naejangsa was called both as Naejangsa and Yeongeunsa or it was called in a mixed way.
Temples in Mt. Naejangsan which were barely collapsed due to the buddhism suppression policy were rehabilitated by a monk named Baek Hak-Myong. In 1920s, he rehabilitated a temple at the place where the present Byeokryonam was and named it as Byeokryonsa Temple. However, the official or public name of the Byeokryonsa Temple was Naejangsa Temple. At that time, the Japanese Government-General of Korea and Korean buddhism circle called the temples in Mt. Naejangsan as Naejangsa Temple and Choi Nam-Sun called a main building placed in the present Naejangsa main building site as Daeungjeon(Main Building) of Yeongeunsa Temple. Like this, it was differently called Byeokryonsa, Naejangsa or Yeongeunsa according to who recorded it.
In 1938, a monk named Maegok hurried to rebuid a main building at the present main building site. The name of the temple rebuilt was Naejangsa. Since then, the spatial range of the Naejangsa Temple has been the same as present although it indicated all of the temples in Mt. Naejangsa or only Byeokryonam. However, with building the Daeungjeon in 1938 as a chance, Naejangsa means the space centering on the present Daeungjeon of Naejangsa Temple. However, the community called it Yeongeunsa, Naejangsa or Byeokryonsa in a mixed way. Even the Daeungjeon built by Maegok was burned down during the Korean War.
In the 1950s when the Korean War ended, a Daeungjeon was newly built with building materials from Bohwamun of Bochongyo at the present Daeungjeong site. Since then, Naejangsa Temple of Mt. Naejangsan has been generally recognized by community people. As the Naejangsa Temple of Mt. Naejangsan become an idiom both community people and the entire society, it is reminiscent of Jeongeup, autumn red and yellow leaves and ancient temples.
