초록

Bingdian(Freezing point in Chinese), a weekly supplement magazine to China Youth Daily in the People's Republic of China, was temporarily shut down by officials 24 January 2006, but was allowed to reopen in March that year. The scandal over Bingdian was originated from an article, modernization and history textbook in it by philosophy professor Yuanweishi of Zhongshan University.
The article dissented from the official view of the second Opium war and the Yihetuan(the Boxer Rebellion). He challenged the textbooks for portraying the 1900 Boxer Rebellion as a magnificent feat of patriotism without describing the violence committed by the rebels or their extreme anti-foreign views. He also criticized the books for blaming the second Opium War of the mid-1800s entirely on foreign nations, without mentioning the Qing government's record of violating treaties by refusing foreign merchants access to Chinese cities. He wrote the article in the name of “telling true history to the youth”.
The Chinese government has suspended Bingdian and outspoken newspaper sections, accusing its editors of viciously attacking the socialist system. The decision to stop Bingdian was made by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the China Communist Party. The Publicity Department was formerly the Propaganda Bureau, and is responsible for supervision of all news and publication activities in China.
Great controversy about the article broke out in China. Many critical readers, netizens and intellectuals were mostly supportive Yuanweishi and criticized Publicity Department of Central Committee, asking for the liberty of the press. In addition, many foreign press reported the suspending of Bingdian. Public opinion of in and out made Bingdian recover by the Chinese government reluctantly on the condition that there should be an article criticizing the Yuanweishi’s article by Zhanghaipeng.
This scandal symbolically shows that there would be political oppression in case of different interpretation of history from Chinese Communist Party. There is the possibility of the second or the third Bingdian scandal in China.
