초록

腆支의 渡倭는 倭와의 군사 협력을 도모해, 불리하게 전개되는 高句麗와의 대결 국면을 전환하려는 百濟 阿莘王의 노력으로 이해되곤 한다. 그런데 『日本書紀』 에서는 이러한 전지의 도왜 소식과 함께 倭가 백제의 영토를 ‘奪’하였으며, 그가 귀국할 때에 이를 ‘賜’하였다는 내용을 수록하고 있다. 당시 백제와 倭의 국가 발전 수준과 倭 중심으로 왜곡･과장하는 일본서기의 서술 경향을 보았을 때, 해당기록은 전지의 도왜 활동을 기점으로 발생한 백제 세력권 관련 현상을 변형한 결과로 이해된다.
도왜하기에 앞서 전지는 태자에 정식 임명되는 동시에 한반도 남부를 관리하는 업무를 부여받게 되었는데, 이는 近肖古王 이래로 백제 국왕들이 후계자들의실력을 축적시켜 그의 정치적 위상을 높여주려는 목적에서 이루어진 관례였다. 당시 백제는 고구려와의 지속되는 전쟁과 북부를 중심으로 출현한 전력 손실로 전쟁을 수행할 군사･경제력 동원에 한계를 느꼈고, 전지는 그 대안으로 추진되었던 한반도 남부에 대한 군사･경제력을 징발하는 임무를 주로 수행하게 되었다. 전지가담당하였던 구역은 백제의 세력권 및 영향권으로 자인된 ‘枕彌多禮 및 峴南･支侵谷那･東韓’으로 설정되었으며, 현실상에서는 주로 오늘날의 忠淸･全羅권을, 관념상으로는 한반도 남부 지역 전역을 포괄하였다.
전지는 부왕인 아신왕의 지시로 한반도 남부에서 倭로 활동 무대를 옮기는 과정에서 이러한 자신의 경력을 倭에 각인시킨다. 그리고 이후 아신왕의 사망으로전지는 후계자로서 자신에게 주어졌던 관리권 보유 권역을 아들과 그를 보좌하는인사에게 맡겨 그와 지지 세력의 본국 내 정치 기반을 마련해주고, 新羅에 대한스스로의 대응에 필요하였던 ‘동한’의 관리권만을 직접 지니고 귀국길에 오른다.
이와 같은 사정들은 훗날 일본서기 편찬 과정에서 각각 ‘奪’과 ‘賜’로 왜곡･변형돼 전지 도왜 관계 기사의 형태로 전해지게 되었다고 정리할 수 있겠다.

영어초록

The Crown Prince Jeonji(腆支)’s movements to Wa(倭) is generally understood as Baekje(百濟)’s King Asin(阿莘王)’s effort taken in an attempt to reverse the confrontation with Goguryeo(高句麗) in its unfavorable circumstances, by seeking military cooperation with Wa. However, in “The Nihon Shoki(日本書紀)”, the story of Jeonji’s movements to Wa is recorded alongside with the entry that writes Wa ‘seized(奪)’ Baekje’s territories, and ‘bestowed(賜)’ them to him when he returned to Baekje.
Considering the states of development of Baekje and Wa at the time and the narrative indications of “The Nihon Shoki” that often distorts and exaggerates in favor of Wa, the records is understood as a distortion of the phenomena related to Baekje’s sphere of power, which occurred at the time Jeonji’s movements to Wa.
Before movements to Wa, Jeonji was officially appointed as the Crown Prince and at the same time he was given the authority to govern the southern part of the Korean peninsula. It was a practice made by the Baekje kings since the reign of King Geunchogo(近肖古王) in order to build up their successors' political skills and enhance their political status. Due to the continuing war with Goguryeo and the loss of power that appeared in the north of the country, Baekje was conscious of the limit in mobilizing military and economic power to carry out the war. So as an alternative, Jeonji mainly took on the mission of requisitioning military and economic power from the southern part of the Korean peninsula. The area in charge of Jeonji was set up, including ‘Hyeonnam(峴南), Jichim(支侵), Gokna(谷那), Donghan(東韓), and Chimmidare(枕彌多禮)', and it was self-acknowledged as being under the power and influence of Baekje. Generally, they mainly covered over today's Chungcheong(忠淸) and Jeolla(全羅) provinces in reality, and over the entire southern regions of the Korean Peninsula in ideology.
Jeonji imprints his position in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula on Wa, while moving his activities to Wa under the direction of his father, King Asin. And when King Asin died, Jeonji entrusted the area of the governing authority that was given to himself as the successor of Baekje’s King to his son and his assistant, providing a political foundation in the home country for his son and supporters. Instead, he made his way back to Baekje with only the governing authority about ‘Donghan’ that was necessary for his dealing with Silla(新羅). It can be concluded that these circumstances were later distorted and transformed into ‘Seizing’ and ‘Bestowing’ respectively in the process of compiling “The Nihon Shoki”, and thus remained in the form of the articles about the movements of Jeonji to Wa.
