조선후기 지식 패러다임의 변화와 몽예 남극관 － 소론 지식인의 지적 산물, 「謝施子」 － (Mongyae Nam Geukgwan and Knowledge Paradigm in the later of Joseon Dynasty - Intellectual Work of Soron intelligent, Sasija(謝施子))

초록

남극관은 지극히 소론 성향을 가진 지식인이었으며, 남극관의 「사시자」는 소론 지식인의 지적 산물이다. 이에 본고는 남극관의 「사시자」를 토대로 조선 후기 소론 지식인의 지적 관심 영역을 살피고, 그것이 가지는 당대 노론 지식인의 지적 관심 영역과의 변별점을 살피는 것을 목표로 하였다.
이에 남극관의 「사시자」에 드러나는 지적 관심 영역을 우리말에 대한 애정, 중국과 동이성 고찰을 통한 조선 인식, 자연과학에 대한 관심으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 남극관은 우리말과 우리글에 대한 깊은 애정과 조예를 가지고 있었고, 중국과 상대적인 관점에서 조선을 의식하고 있었으며, 서학의 영향을 받은 자연과학에 많은 관심을 쏟고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
그런데 남극관의 「사시자」에 드러나는 다양한 지적 관심 영역이 남극관 개인의 관심을 넘어 당대 소론 지식인의 공통된 지적 관심 영역이었다는 점에서 더욱 주목된다. 남극관의 언어, 그중에서도 훈민정음에 대한 관심은 최석정⋅이광사 등 소론계 학자들의 공통된 특징으로 꼽히는 항목이며, 남극관의 역사에 대한 관심이나 악부시 창작도 남구만⋅박세당 등 소론 지식인들의 지적 관심 영역 중 공통 영역이었다. 더불어 남극관의 자연과학에 대한 관심도 최석정, 정제두 등 소론계 지식인들의 그것과 궤를 같이 한다.
또한 소론 지식인의 지적 관심을 대변했던 남극관의 이러한 관심 영역이 당대 노론 지식인들의 지적 관심 영역과는 확연히 다르다는 점이 주목된다. 남극관이 우리말의 언어와 문자에 애정을 보이고 전문적인 견해를 가졌던 것에 반해, 노론 지식인들의 글에서는 언어에 대한 관심이 상대적으로 적었다. 또한 어휘에 대한 관심이 있다고 하더라도 노론 지식인들의 관심은 우리글, 우리말이 아닌 한자에 국한되었다. 또 남극관이 서학의 영향으로 자연과학에 상당한 관심을 보였으며 전문적인 지적 수준을 가지고 있었음에 비해, 노론 지식인들은 주자학적 자연인식에 기반하여 西學에 대해 무관심한 태도로 일관하였다. 이로 볼 때, 남극관의 우리말과 글, 자연과학에 대한 관심은 소론계 지식인의 지적 관심을 대변하면서 동시에 노론의 그것과 변별되는 지점을 보여준다.
본고는 이렇듯 「사시자」에 드러나는 남극관의 지적 관심 영역을 세 분야에서 살펴보았고, 그것이 동시대 소론 지식인의 지식 패러다임의 변화 양상과 궤를 같이 하면서 동시에 노론 지식인의 그것과는 확연히 달랐음을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 조선 후기라는 같은 시대를 살아가면서도, 소론과 노론이라는 당파에 따라 지식 패러다임의 변화 양상이 궤를 달리하였다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Nam Geukgwan was an intelligent who has loyal Soron tendency, and his Sasija was an intellectual work of Soron intelligent. This paper researched intellectual interests fields of Soron intelligentsia based on Sasija in Joseon Dynasty later and aimed at revealing differences between intellectual interests fields of Soron intelligentsia and those of Noron intelligentsia. This paper divided intellectual interests fields of Sasija into the affection on our language, awareness on Joseon through studying China and Dongyi and interests on natural science. Through these fact, this paper revealed that Nam Geukgwan had deep affection and knowledge on our language, he appreciated Joseon with relative view against China and he was interested in natural science especially not that of Neo-Confucianism but natural science influenced by western.
Noting point of variety fields of intellectual interests in Sasija was discrete. It was that his fields of intellectual interest were fields of intellectual interest of Soron intelligentsia beyond his interest at that time. His interest on language, especially about our language, Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音), was a common features of Soron researchers, Choi Seokjeong, Lee Gwangsa, Hong Yangho, Jeong Dongyou, Hong Heejun, You Hee, Jeong Yoonyong and Lee Youwon. Also his interest on history and writing Akbusi(a kind of traditional poems of Korean) were common fields of intellectual interest of Soron intelligentsia. The former was a common features of Soron writers such as Nam Guman and Park Sedang, the latter was a common features of Soron researches such as Nam Guman, Lee Segui and Lee Gwangsa. Nam Geukgwan’s interest on natural had the same way of those of Soron intelligentsia, Choi Seokjeong and Jeong Jedu.
Also, this paper noted at difference between intellectual interests fields of Nam Geukgwan representing intellectual interests of Soron and those of Noron. While he had an interest on Korean language and characters, in works of Noron intelligentsia, interests on language were little relatively. If they had interests on language, it was on China characters. And, Nam Geukgwan had an interest on natural science and technical knowledge while Noron intelligentsia posed consistently an indifferent attitude on western study based on awareness of nature in Neo-Confucianism. Through these facts, Nam Geukgwan’s interests on Korean language and natural science represented intellectual interests fields of Soron intelligentsia and showed differences with those of Noron.
This paper studied three fields of Nam Geukgwan’s intellectual interests fields and showed that they the same way of the change types of paradigm on Soron intelligentsia. Through these fact, this paper demonstrated that the differences between knowledge paradigm change of each part, Soron and Noron in the same period, the later of Joseon Dynasty.
