초록

일제강점기의 한국불교는 전통과 근대의 전환 속에서 진행되었다. 승려의 도성출입이 재개되면서 표면적으로는 그 지위와 인식이 향상된 것으로 보였지만, 변한 것은 아무것도 없었다. 불교가 차지하고 있었던 유구한 전통문화의 가치와함께 사원경제의 근간은 수탈의 대상이 되었다. 통감부와 사회 인사들의 사찰토지 약탈과 환수는 사원경제를 악화시키는 일차적인 요인이 되었다. 조선시대사원의 존립기반이었던 산림과 사원전 환수가 이루어진 것이다. 왕실과 지배층의 원당(願堂)에 소속된 토지와 삼림 역시 갑오개혁과 토지조사사업의 과정에서국유화되거나 이왕직 소유로 전환되었다. 불교가 지닌 정체성과 종교적 공능을도외시한 결과였다. 천년 고찰의 수행과 예배 대상인 성보문화재 역시 몰지각한훼손과 매매로 황폐화 위기에 처하기도 하였다. 일제강점기 한국불교의 종교적사회적 지위를 살필 수 있는 부분이다. 당시 불교계는 호법(護法)의 인식 속에서재산을 지키고자 한 노력도 있었지만, 근대불교의 개혁에 순종하고 자기 존엄에대한 가치에 소극적이었다. 한국근대불교사연구는 그동안 불교정책이나 친일과항일, 인물의 생애와 동향에 대해 살펴왔고, 사찰과 승려가 직면하고 있었던 상황에 대해서는 관심을 주지 않았던 것이 사실이다. 본고가 일제강점기 사원경제의침탈을 살피는 일은 한국근대불교의 본질을 살피는 일이기도 하다.

영어초록

Korean Buddhism during the Japanese occupation progressed in the midst of a transition between tradition and modernity. The resumption of Buddhist Monks Entering Castle Town ostensibly seemed to improve their status and recognition, but nothing had changed. Along with the value of Buddhism's eternal traditional culture, the foundation of the temple economy has become the object of expropriation. The establishment of the modern university, which took place in the whirlwind of modern reforms, was carried out in the recognition that the land owned by the temple was public property. The looting and expropriation of temple land by the Japanese Resident-General(統監府) in Seoul and social figures has become the primary factor in the deterioration of the temple economy. This was followed by the return of land owned by temples during the Joseon Dynasty.
Land and forests belonging to the royal family and the ruling class of Wondang (願堂) were also nationalized or converted into royal ownership in the course of the reform and land survey work. It was the result of ignoring Buddhism's identity and religious effectiveness(功能). The treasures of the historic temple were also in danger of being devastated by the senseless damage and sale. This is a part where we can examine the religious and social status of Korean Buddhism during the Japanese occupation. At that time, the Buddhist world made efforts to protect property in the perception of the Protection of Buddhism, but it was obedient to the reforms of modern Buddhism and was passive in its value of self-dignity. It is true that the study of modern Buddhist teachers in Korea has looked at Buddhist policies, pro-Japanese and anti-Japanese, and the lives and trends of people, but has not paid attention to the situation faced by temples and monks. Examining the encroachment of the temple economy during the Japanese occupation is also examining the essence of modern Korean Buddhism.
