초록

본 논문은 계본(季本:1485~1563)의 『논어사존(論語私存)』을 대상으로 양명의 직전제자인 계본의 『논어』이해와 경학적 태도를 분석하고 이를 통하여 양명학적 경학의 한 유형을 찾고자 하였다. 양명학의 경학은 양명학 자체가 가진 문자의 구속을 멀리하고 마음 본체를 중시하는 경향에 의하여 경학의 저술이 많지 않기에 학술계에서는 명대를 경학의 쇠퇴기라고 명명할 정도로 자료와 그에 관한 연구가 희소하다. 계본은 다른 양명후학과는 다르게 수많은 저술을 남겼는데 특히 『사서사존 』은 양명학적 경학을 파악할 중요한 자료이다. 그 중에 『논어사존』은 계본의 사상을 알 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 『대학사존 』』과 『중용사존 』에서는 직접 언급되지 않았던 계본의 경학 태도를 확인할 수 있다.
“어찌 언어로 도(道)를 다할 수 있겠는가!” 이는 계본이 「어맹사존서(語孟私存序)」에서 한 말이다. 언어는 드러남으로 표현의 한계가 있고, 도는 은미하며 모든 사물에 대응한다. 제한적 언어로 은미한 도를 모두 드러낼 수 없다. 계본은『논어』 또한 성현이 체득한 도의 은미함을 담고 있지만 문자로 기록되어 드러난 것이기에 문자에 구속되지 않고 그 속에 담긴 도의 은미함을 체득해야한다고 강조한다. 『논어사존』은 계본이 언외지의(言外之意)로 파악한 일관지도(一貫之道)를 중심으로 『논어』를 해석하는데, “학(學)”을 형식의 모방이 아닌 그 속에 담긴 은미함을 마음으로 이해로 해석하고, “문(文)”을 육예와 같은 기예가 아닌 은미한 도가 드러난 것으로 해석하며, 효제(孝弟)와 인(仁)을 일관시키고, 박문(博文)과 약례(約禮)를 일관시켜 이해하고 있다. 이는 체용과 본말을 구분한 선유들의 해석을 비판하고 드러남에서 은미함을 궁구하여 마음에 수렴하는 일련의 과정으로 『논어』의 구절들을 재해석한 것으로, 계본은 『논어』의 각 구절을 독립적으로 해석하는 대신, 전체적인 맥락과 일관성을 중시하며, 이를 통해 경전 속에 숨겨진 ‘일관지도’를 드러내려고 한다. 『논어사존』의 언외지의(言外之意)와 일관지도(一貫之道)는 주자학의 『논어』해석과 차별화된 양명학적 『논어』이해를 제시하며 명대 경학의 한 유형으로서 충분히 의미가 있다.

This paper delves into the exegesis of the Analects(Lunyu) and the hermeneutic stance of Ji Ben(季本: 1485–1563), a direct disciple of Wang Yangming, through his work Lunyu Sichun(《論語私存》). The objective is to uncover a distinctive type of hermeneutics within the Yangming School’s philosophical framework. Yangming’s hermeneutic tradition, characterized by its aversion to the constraints of script and its emphasis on the essence of the mind, has resulted in a paucity of scholarly works, leading to a perception of the Ming Dynasty as a period of decline in Confucian scholarship. Ji Ben, in contrast to other post-Yangming scholars, bequeathed a substantial corpus of writings, with Sishu Sichun(《四書私存》) being pivotal for grasping the Yangming School’s approach to hermeneutics. Among these, Lunyu Sichun not only unveils Ji Ben’s philosophical insights but also articulates his stance on hermeneutics, which is not explicitly addressed in Daxue Sichun or Zhongyong Sichun.
“How can words fully express the Dao(道)?” Ji Ben queried in the preface to Yumeng Sichun(《語孟私存序》). Language, with its inherent limitations as a medium of expression, cannot capture the subtlety and universality of the Dao. Thus, Ji Ben’s approach to the Analects advocates for a holistic understanding where the external quest for knowledge(博文) and the internalization of virtue(約禮) are not distinct but are two facets of a unified pursuit of the Dao. This unity reflects the Yangming School’s emphasis on the inseparability of knowledge and action, where learning is the means to embody virtue, and virtue is the end of learning. Ji Ben’s interpretation of the Analects differs significantly from Zhu Xi’s, offering a Yangming-informed understanding that is valuable as an exegetical practice during the Ming Dynasty. Lunyu Sichun presents a Yangming-style interpretation of the Analects, providing fresh insights into Ming Confucian exegesis. This interpretation challenges the academic consensus of the Ming Dynasty as a period of decline in classical scholarship by demonstrating a profound and consistent understanding of the classics that transcends textual analysis. Ji Ben’s writings link the practical application of Confucian principles with the cultivation of the mind, underscoring the individual’s active role in pursuing the Dao.
