신라 하대 황룡사의 역할과 공간의 변화 (Changes in the Role and Space of Hwangryongsa (皇⿓寺) in the Late Period of Silla)

초록

황룡사는 신라 진흥왕대 창건되어 고려 고종대까지 유지되었다. 황룡사는 신라시대 불교계를대표하고 있었는데, 남아있는 역사 기록은 주로 신라 하대의 것이다.
그간의 발굴조사를 통해 황룡사 예불영역은 창건부터 폐사까지 4차례 가량 변화하였음이 밝혀졌고, 동서편의 외곽 공간들이 활성화되었던 시기는 9세기로 파악되었다.
본고에서는 신라 하대 황룡사의 역할과 공간의 변화를 살펴보기 위해 당시 정치 상황과 앞서언급한 발굴조사 결과를 연결해 보고자 한다. 신라 하대 가운데 9세기는 애장왕~진성왕대에 해당한다.
애장왕 7년에 사찰을 새롭게 세우거나, 사찰내 금 ․ 은 용기 사용을 규제하는 교지가 내려졌다.
이는 중대말 경덕왕대부터 행해진 많은 불사활동으로 야기된 경제 및 사회문제를 해결하기 위함이었다. 애장왕의 교지를 이행한 관청은 정법전이었다.
애장왕은 김언승에 의해 피살되었지만, 그가 내린 사찰창건 금지령은 유지되었을 것이다. 하지만 민간에서 자신의 집을 희사하여 불사를 이루는 행위는 제재 받지 않았는데, 이것은 흥덕왕대 홍효사와 진성왕대 양존사를 통해 알 수 있다. 사찰 창건 금지령이 유지되는 동안에도 고승추모비가 만들어지고, 사찰의 유지 보수를 위한 불사는 이루어졌다. 문성왕대에도 불경과 부처의치아가 들어왔듯이 여전히 불교는 신라 사회에 긴밀한 영향을 주고 있었다.
신라 하대 황룡사의 기록은 경문왕대 들어 등장한다. 경문왕은 황룡사 9층 목탑을 수리하고, 그 이후 황룡사에서는 백고좌회와 연등회가 개최되었다. 특히 정강왕과 진성왕대는 6개월 동안2번의 백고좌회를 통해 국정안정을 기원하였다.
황룡사에서 대규모 행사가 개최될 수 있었던 것은 예불영역의 넓은 공간성과 함께 이를 준비할 수 있는 외곽공간이 마련되었기에 가능하였다.
한편, 황룡사의 변화는 발굴조사에서도 확인되었다. 북편의 출입시설인 동문지가 3×2칸으로확장된 시기가 9~10세기경이며, 동회랑 동편지구 역시 이때 조성되었다고 한다. 현재 발굴조사중인 서회랑 서편지구 내 상층 유구들의 시기도 9세기경으로 파악되었다. 9세기 즉 신라 하대의황룡사는 법회와 연회를 개최하기 위한 공간이자 신라사경소와 같은 연구공간으로 활발히 이용되었다. 이러한 종교의식의 대표공간이라는 인식을 바탕으로 황룡사는 고려시대까지도 이어질수 있었다.

영어초록

Hwangryongsa Temple was established during the reign of King Jinheung of the Silla Dynasty and remained active until the reign of King Gojong of the Goryeo Dynasty. Since its establishment, Hwangryongsa played a significant role in the Buddhist community of Silla, although surviving historical records primarily focus on the late period of the Silla Dynasty. Through archaeological excavations, it has been determined that the layout of the Buddhist service area in Hwangryongsa underwent approximately four major changes from its founding to its closure. Particularly, during the 9th century of the late Silla period, considered the heyday of the Silla Dynasty, the outer areas became more active.
To delve into the changes in Hwangryongsa during the Late Silla Period, connecting the political landscape of the time with the findings from excavations is crucial. The 9th century of the Late Silla Period corresponds to the reigns of King Aejang to King Jinsung.
In the 7th year of King Aejang's reign, a temple ban was enforced, and a governmental body was established to oversee its implementation. Towards the end of the mid-period, under the reign of King Gyeongdeok, temple construction was regulated to address the economic and social challenges stemming from extensive Buddhist activities. The governmental institution responsible for executing King Aejang's decree was the Jeongbeopjeon, which was founded during the reign of King Wonseong.
The Jeongbeopjeon was an established organization since the mid-period of the Silla Dynasty. In the late period, it included monks as officials; it also prohibited the establishment of new temples and regulated the use of gold and silver vessels in temples.
Despite King Aejang's demise at the hands of King Seondeok, the temple ban he initiated likely persisted. During King Munsung's reign, Buddhism maintained a significant influence on Silla, evidenced by the importation of Buddhist scriptures and Buddha's tooth into the kingdom. This relationship led to the erection of memorial monuments and the renovation of temples. Moreover, there were instances where individuals donated their homes for religious rituals, but this practice was not officially sanctioned, as exemplified by the cases of Honghyo-sa Temple during King Heungdeok's reign and Yangjon-sa Temple during King Jinsung's reign.
King Gyeongmun repaired the wooden pagoda on the ninth floor of Hwangryong-sa, and since then, Hwangryong-sa has hosted the Baekgosajhoe ceremony and the Lotus Lantern Festival. In particular, during the reigns of King Jeonggang and King Jinsung, two Baekgosajhoe ceremonies were held every six months. It can be seen that they prayed for public sentiment and national stability through the Baekgosajhoe.
The large-scale events held at Hwangryong-sa were made possible by the spacious ceremonial area and the availability of outlying spaces for preparations. The changes in Hwangryong-sa, especially after King Gyeongmun's reign, have been substantiated by archaeological excavations. It is noted that around the 9th to 10th centuries, the Dongmunji, the northern entrance, was expanded to 3×2 compartments, and the eastern section of the East Corridor was constructed during this period. Excavations have also revealed that the upper levels of the western section of the West Corridor, currently under excavation, date back to the 9th century. During the 9th century, known as the Late Silla Period, Hwangryong-sa was actively utilized for hosting ceremonies and banquets, aiming to ensure royal stability. The acknowledgment of Hwangryong-sa as a significant space for religious rituals, established during this period, enabled its continuation into the Goryeo Dynasty.
