초록

종교간 소통과 평화를 위해 작성된 이 논문은, 부제 ‘종교간 대화를 위한 기초’가 말해 주듯, 종교간 소통과 평화를 위한 임시적인 방법보다 이를 위해 선행되어야 하는 기초를 제시하고 있다.
종교간 대화하고 소통하려면 단순히 교리를 이해하는 일에 그치서는 안 된다. 종교는 제도이고 문화이고 감성이기 때문이다. 교리의 옳고 그름을 따져가며 대화를 할 수도 있겠지만, 교리는 제도화되고 문화화되고 감성화되어 있기 때문에 옳고 그름을 따지는 일이 쉽지도 않거니와 옳고 그름을 가려보는 일이 아무 의미가 없을 수도 있다. 자신들이 믿는 종교의 교리는 옳고 그름을 이치적으로 따져보기 전에 무조건 믿는 경향이 강하기 때문이다.
또 어떤 종교든 자신들이 믿는 절대자를 두고 있고 이 절대자의 보편성을 강조하면서 자신도 모르게 다른 종교의 절대자를 배척하고 있다. 사실 절대자를 보는 종교적 체험은 유사할 수 있는데, 각 민족이 처한 상황에 따라 이 절대자를 다르게 해석해 왔고 이로부터 대립과 갈등이 비롯되기도 했다.
그런데 이런 문제는 각 개인의 대립에서 비롯된다고 할 수 있다. 각 개인은 누구나 시작이 없는 때로부터 내려오는 아집과 법집을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 특정한 종교에 대한 믿음에는 이러한 아집과 법집이 내재해 있다. 각 개인이 아집과 법집을 제거하려고 노력해 가면서 남을 이해할 수 있게 되듯이, 내가 믿는 종교와 다른 종교도 이해할 수 있게 된다. 설사 절대자를 중심으로 한 특정 종교의 교리 체계가 옳지 않더라도 말이다. 아집과 법집을 제거해 가려고 노력하면서 종교의 다양한 면, 즉 의식(儀式), 언어, 예술 등을 이해할 수 있는 능력과 인내력이 형성되고 배양될 수 있다.
다른 사람의 종교와 진정으로 대화하려면 부단히 나의 아집과 법집을 제거하려는 노력을 하지 않으면 안 된다. 이렇게 제거해 가려는 노력을 불교 용어로 계, 정, 혜의 삼학이라 말할 수 있다면, 계학은 종교마다 문화적 배경이 다르기에 다를 수 있겠지만 정학과 혜학은 다를 수 없다. 정학과 혜학은 과학적, 철학적 토양에 굳고 깊게 뿌리를 내리고 있기 때문이다. 이 논문은 과학적, 철학적 기반을 갖고 있는 불교의 정학과 혜학의 수행방법과 이들의 관계를 다른 종교인들이 쉽게 알 수 있도록 설명하는 일을 목적으로 하고 있다. 사마타와 위빠사나를 수행할 때 우리는 진정으로 나의 평화를 찾을 수 있고 남과 대화하고 소통할 수 있으며 남을 평화를 이끌 수 있다.

영어초록

This thesis, which has been written for the communication and peace between various religions, is presenting the basis to be preceded more than the temporal method.
The conversation and communication between various religions must not be limited to the mere understanding of their doctrines, because religion is a kind of system, culture, and sensibility. Even though we can converse with others who believe in other religions, the systemization, culturalization, and sensiblization of their doctrines make it difficult to judge whether it is right or wrong. We tend to believe it before we judge whether it is right or wrong on the ground of reason.
While they believe and worship the Absolute and emphasize the universality of the Absolute, they exclude the Absolutes of other religions. Even though they share the religional experience of intuiting the Absolute, they have been making different interpretations according to the situation in which each nation has been in. The oppostion and conflict come from it.
It can be said that these problems are originated from the opposition of each individual, because every one has been possessed of the attachment of ego and things. The attachment of ego and things are inherent in the belief in a certain religion from the time that has no beginning. As each individual would be able to understand others, so we would be able to understand other religions which are different from mine, even though a certain religion is wrong with its doctrine system. On the process of eliminating the attachment of ego and things, we can form and foster the ability of understanding the rituals, languages, arts of other religions.
We need to endeavor to eliminate the attachment of ego and things unceasingly to gain the real conversation with other's religion. The effort to elimintate them can be referred to three learnings of Buddhism, that is, precept learning, concentration learning, wisdom learning. Precept learning can be different between various religions because of the cultural background, but the concentration learning and wisdom learning cannot be different. This thesis aims at explaining the method of concentration learning and wisdom learning which is based on science and philosophy, for the purpose of helping other religions understand Buddhism and themselves practice those learnings. It can be encompassed within the name of samatha and vipasana. Practicing the samatha and vipassana, we can obtain the peace of our mind, and communicate with others, and help others enter into peaceful world.
