예배공간에서 빛과 색에 관한 신학적 의미 (The Theological Meaning of Light and Color in Worship Space)

초록

교회는 건축술과 재료의 발달에 힘입어 빛을 최대한 활용할 수 있는 예배공간을 조성하려는 노력을 한다. 초대교회건축에서 부터 빛과 색은 성서와 그리스 사상을 토대로 하여 하나님과 그분의 현현을 상징했다. 건축술과 재료, 그리고 빛에 관한 신학이 조우하고 미적으로는 조화와 균형이라는 개념으로 건축에서 꽃을 피운 것이 중세 유럽의 고딕양식이다. 모자이크와 색유리를 활용하여 가톨릭 교리의 화체설을 표현한 것이기도 하다. 현대 개신교회의 건축 설계가들은 환경 친화적이며 영적인 예배공간을 마련하기 위해 자연채광과 인공조명을 활용하는 연구를 하고 있지만 개신교의 신학과는 깊이 연결하지 못하고 있다. 이 논문의 목적은 교회건축에서의 빛과 색에 관한 신학적이며 도상학적인 상징적 의미를 밝히고 이를 토대로 하여 현대 한국개신교회건축에서 적절한 예배공간을 구축하기 위한 신학적인 조명이다. 대다수 개신교회는 색 유리창을 신학과는 무관하게 단순히 공간 분위기 창출과 장식용으로 활용하고 있다. 빛과 어둠에 대하여 이원론적으로 공간을 분절해오는 서양교회건축의 도상학과 가톨릭의 화체설을 근간으로 하여 창출된 색 유리창에 관한 신학을 극복하고, 이미지를 배척하는 개신교 예배의 말씀 중심의 신학과 동양 사상에서의 음 양의 조화를 신학적으로 해석하고 이것을 개신교회 공간 안에 어떻게 표현할 것인지는 한국교회건축과 예배학 분야에서 풀어가야 할 토착화의 과제이기도 하다. 최근 개신교회 안에서 예배공간을 극장식 공간으로 재정비하여 ‘빛과 색’ 보다는, ‘말씀’ 보다는, ‘소리’를 우선하는 듯한 '열린예배' 혹은 'emerging worship' 이라는 예배 양태의 유행을 보면서 잃어가는 상징성을 기억하며, 개신교회 예배에 적절한 빛을 활용한 공간분절과 한국의 전통적인 오방색에 대한 신학적 해석을 통해 교회가 이를 활용할 수 있기를 바라는 제안이다.

영어초록

The church makes the best use of light to create worship space with the development of architecture and materials. The combination of light and color has represented the incarnation of God since the early church architecture on the basis of the Bible and Greek thought. It is in Gothicism of Medieval Europe that architecture bloomed in the way of the aesthetic concept of harmony and balance on the back of materials, building, and light. Mosaic and stained glass are a way of expressing transubstantiation in Catholic doctrine. Architectural designers of Modern Protestant church are currently working on natural light and artificial lighting to create spiritual and eco-friendly worship space, but fail to speak fully for protestant theology. This paper aims at discovering the theological, iconological, and symbolic meaning of light and color in worship space, and at providing a theological foundation for methods of constructing the right worship space in Modern Protestant church architecture on the basis of the discovery. The majority of Protestant churches are using the stained glass simply for decorations or interior purposes regardless of theology. For the sake of acculturation which Korean church architecture and liturgics are now faced with, first of all, we need to overcome the stained glass-oriented theology, which derives from the iconology of western church architecture and the Catholic transubstantiation which have contributed to the binary division of space into light and dark. Second, we need to renew the theological interpretation of the harmony of yin and yang in Eastern thought along with word-centered theology of Protestant liturgy exclusive of images. Lastly, we need to embody the interpretations in Protestant church space. The type of 'open worship' or 'emerging worship' is now trendy in Protestant church. The form of worship seems to prioritize 'sound' over 'words' or 'light and color' by turning worship space into theatrical space. Now is the right time to revive the symbolism of light and color that is being forgotten in liturgy. Here the theological interpretation of the Korean five traditional colors, and spatial articulation with the adequate use of light are suggested here for the Protestant worship.
