[빛] 개념의 의미 확장 양상: 통시적 접근 (Semantic extensions of the concept LIGHT: A diachronic approach)

초록

This study aims to delve into the whole picture of the story of various senses which have developed from the concept LIGHT, especially examining the etymological senses of English words. The metaphor GOOD IS LIGHT has been a topic of interest both in linguistic and non-linguistic research. The metaphoric extension of LIGHT into various senses are noteworthy, since it is not limited to the value GOOD. In cognitive linguistics studies, the issue of LIGHT is often brought up to compare the (extended) meanings of the similiar concept COLOR. The study takes up the etymological issue of a Proto-Indo European root, which is an ancestry of the current sense of a word, giving it a hint of the proto-sense in a way. The study lists up the PIE roots of LIGHT and identifies the various extended senses found in the cognates(i.e., ILLUMINATOR, EAST, SOUTH, DAY, FIRE, APPEARANCE, VISIBILITY, WHITE, RED, BLACK, GOD, GLORY/HONOR, HAPPINESS, GLANCE, ENLIGHTENMENT, UNDERSTANDING, ANGER, and so on). It is found that the synchronic variation is in line with the diachronic change of meaning. Furthermore, the fact that the extended senses of LIGHT are similar in Korean words and Chinese characters indicates that human beings basically share the same experience with LIGHT.
