미디어 아트에서의 시간과 공간의 초월성 : 빌 비올라의 <순교자들-대지, 공기, 불과 물(Martyrs–Earth, Air, Fire and Water)>(2014)을 중심으로 (Transcendence of Time and Space in Media Art: Bill Viola's (2014))

초록

“내 작업은 개인적인 발견과 깨달음의 과정에 집중되어 있다. 비디오는 내 몸의 일부이다. 비디오는 직관적이며 무의식적이다.” 빌 비올라가 작품<순교자들-대지, 공기, 불과 물(Martyrs–Earth, Air, Fire, and Water)>(2014)에 관한 인터뷰 내용이다.
이 연구는 빌 비올라가 2014년 런던에 설치된 비올라의 “순교자들”에 초점을 맞추었다. 미디어아트에서 시간과 공간에 대한 비올라의 예술적 탐구가 2014년 런던의 세인트 폴 대성당에 설치한 작품에서 현시 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 동시대의 미디어비평은 대성당의 중앙 제단의 북쪽에 영구 설치된 그의 “순교자들”을 관조자의 시선을 고요한 명상의 시간으로 초대하여 순교의 의미와 아름다움의 경계에서 부유한다는 것에 시선을 집중한다.
이 연구<미디어아트에서의 시간과 공간의 초월성>는 비올라의 “순교자들”을 분석하여 전통 예술에서 제외되었던 인류학적 질문, 즉 인간 존재의 근원과 미디어아트에서의 초월성에 한 발짝 더 가깝게 들어간다. 비디오 작가 비올라는 하인리히 클로츠(Heinrich Klotz)와 한스 벨팅(Hans Belting)에게 미디어아트에서 설치라는 형식과 시간이라는 개념간의 상호관계에 대한 논쟁마저 초래했다. 기계적으로 조작돼 매우 느리게 흐르는 순교의 이미지로 인해 대성당의 중앙 제단이라는 영성적 공간이 죽음을 초월하는 수용의 방법이 발생했기 때문이다. 비올라의 작품세계에 자주 등장하는 예술적 오브제로서의 인간의 몸 그리고 시간을 현시하는 자연의 4대 원소(흙 공기, 불, 물)는 미디어아트에서 시간적 그리고 공간적 초월성을 이해하는 조건이다. 종교적 어휘를 사용하지 않는 비올라에게 순교의 현시는 기술적으로 조작된 시간이미지와 가상공간으로써 4개의 직사각형 플라스마스크린은 영성적 공간을 미학적 공간으로의 전환이 이루어진다. 전시공간이 아니라 제식공간에서의 대지, 공기, 물과 불의 순교가 각기 현시 방법을 달리하여 미디어아트에서 초월성이 역점을 달리하면서 부각 된다.
비올라의 <순교자들-대지, 공기, 불과 물>(2014)은 우리에게 순교의 예술적 현시가 다양하다는 것을 제시한다. 하나의 작품에도 불구하고 실존적 시간과 가상적 공간에 대한 다양한 수용 방식으로 모아진다. 4개의 자연적 원소들이 4명의 인간의 육체를 요구했다고 하더라도, 또한 인간의 몸이 죽음에 도달하여 마침내 한줄기 빛으로 막을 내린다고 하더라도, 가상공간 속의 순교자들은 우리에게 고통을 선사하지 않는다. 극도로 느리게 조작된 순교의 이미지가 우리에게 존재한 순교의 세계로 침투해 명상이 깊어 진다고 하더라도 실존적 체험은 종교 예술에서 조차도 불가능 하다. 비올라가 인터뷰에서도 밝혔듯이 런던의 “순교자들”은 우리 안에 이미 존재한 순교를 깨닫게 하여 인간의 존재에 대한 근원적 질문으로 예속된다. 미술사에서 불가능하다고 여겨졌던 인류학적 질문 속으로 초대하는 순교의 이미지, 게다가 몸으로 체현 된 순교가 직사각형의 플라스마스크린에 현시 되어 미디어아트에서 가상적 공간과 기술적 시간성이 초월함과 동시에 미적 수용도 달라진다.
비올라의 “순교자들”은 현대사회에서 관조자가 스스로 자신의 존재의 근원에 대한 질문을 선사한다. 인간의 몸으로 체현하는 순교 그리고 죽음을 받아들인 후 삶의 가치가 자아의 희생으로 구현된다는 보편적 진리가 비올라의 미디어아트가 선사한 인간존재의 근원과 다르지 않을 것이다.

“My work is focused on the process of personal discovery and enlightenment. The video is part of my body. The video is intuitive and unconscious.” Bill Viola spoke in an interview about <Martyrs–Earth, Air, Fire and Water>(2014).
The study focused on Viola's "martyrs" in 2014, which was installed in London in London. Viola's artistic exploration of time and space in media art was embodied in his 2004 installation at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Nevertheless, contemporary criticism focuses on the viola's “martyrs”, who are permanently installed at the central altar of the cathedral, inviting the observer's gaze into a quiet time of meditation to be rich on the border of meaning and beauty of martyrs image.
Anthropological questions excluded from art-I would like to draw closer to the origin of human existence and transcendence in media art. Video writer Viola has brought Heinrich Klotz and Hans Belting to a debate on the interrelationship between the concept of installation and time in media art. The image of martyrs that is mechanically manipulated and flows very slowly, and the way in which the spiritual space of the central altar of the cathedral transcends death, is also at issue. The four elements of nature (earth, air, fire, and water) as art objects that frequently appear in the works of viola, and as a way of expressing time, are in contact with temporal and spatial transcendence in media art. For Viola, the expression of martyrdom is a technically manipulated image of time and virtual space, and the plasma screen transforms the physical space where the work is installed into a meditative space. Thus, the martyr's manifestation method that embodies the martyrdom, earth, air, water and fire in the altar space, not the exhibition space, emerges from the media art context.
Viola's <Martyrs—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water>(2014) shows us the variety of artistic manifestations of martyrdom. In spite of one work, various ways of acceptance of existential time and virtual space are called up. Even though four natural elements require four human bodies, and even if the human door reaches death and finally shuts down with a single ray of light, martyrs in virtual space do not suffer us. Existing experiences were impossible even in religious art, even though the image of martyrdom that was extremely slowly manipulated penetrated into the world of martyrdom that existed in us. As Viola said in an interview, London's "martyrs" invite us to realize the martyrdom that has already existed in us and to be the fundamental question of human existence. The image of martyrs inviting into the anthropological question that was considered impossible in art history, and the martyrs experienced by the body are expressed on a plasma screen, transcending the virtual space and technical time in media art, and at the same time, its acceptance is changed.
Viola's "martyrs" present themselves in the modern world with questions about the origin of their existence. The universal truth that the value of life is realized as self-sacrifice after accepting the martyrdom and death experienced by the human body will not be different from the origin of the human being presented by the viola's media art.
