The meritocracy belief and the role of self-compassion among South Korean young generation

초록

This study compares intergenerational levels by measuring the meritocratic belief and components of self-compassion in Korean adults. Furthermore, it intended to determine whether components of self-compassion affect meritocracy. Since the scale for meritocracy has not been developed, eight items pools were constructed for this research. Responses to the items and self-compassion scales were collected from 800 Korean adults through the online survey method of convenience sampling. The final analysis data consisted of 790 participants; 143 (18.1%) were in their 20s, 145 (18.4%) in their 30s, 173 (21.9%) in their 40s, 181 (22.9%) in their 50s, and 148 (18.7%) in their 60s. Exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, and reliability analyses revealed the one-factor structure of six items of Meritocracy Belief Scale. The results were as follows: First, the level of meritocracy belief does not differ significantly depending on gender, age group, educational attainment, and residence areas. As people’s age groups went up from their 20s to their 60s, their meritocracy belief tended to become stronger. Second, when comparing the components of self-compassion by age group, young people in their 20s had higher negative tendencies such as self-criticism, isolation, and excessive identification. Third, age, gender, and self-compassion components predict meritocracy belief. The higher the age, the firmer the meritocracy belief. Also, the higher the mindfulness, the higher the belief in meritocracy becomes. In addition, the interaction between age and common humanity was significant which showed that, the higher the common humanity, the higher the meritocracy belief in young people in their 20s. The results implied that the more people accept failure or pain and do not see the cause of failure or pain in their abilities or efforts, the stronger the people’s belief in meritocracy. Finally, the implication and limitation of the present study were discussed.
