초록

브랜딩(Branding)”이라는 단어는 쓰이지 않는 곳이 없다. 크고 작은 기업과제품은 물론이고 기업의 대표 한 사람에게도 당연시 브랜딩을 하는 시대이며, 일개 개인은 물론, 대학도 브랜딩의 시대에 동참한지 오래된 일이다.
기업이나, 제품 또는 상업적 목적을 갖고 있는 여타 브랜드의 이미지 관리방법과 같이, 브랜딩의 대상이 점점 넓어지고 있는 사회적 실정 속에서, 이미마케팅 시장에 뛰어 든 대학은 어떠한 방법으로 그들의 이미지를 새롭게 구축하고 개선하는가를 각 대학이 내세운 전략적 체계 중 시각적인 부분을 집중적으로 연구 분석해 보도록 한다. 이번 연구에서는 특히, 대학의 얼굴이라 할수 있는 University Identity System이 어떠한 디자인 형태를 뜨이고 있는지 분석하고 또한 이들이 대학의 이미지에 어떠한 효과를 발휘하고 있는지 살펴본다.
2000년을 기점으로 지속적으로 시도되고 있는 University Identity 변화의 배경과 그 의의를 살펴보기 위해, 국내 몇 개의 대학을 선정하고 그에 대한 수용자(학생)들의 태도의 변화를 설문을 통해 알아본다.

An Analysis of Korean Universities’ Visual Identity and their Branding Strategy in UIS (University Identity System) Development Lee, Hyung-Jung The importance of branding has been heightened during the past decade or so, thanks to the growing awareness of ‘marketing communication’. The need for effective brand identity applies across both the public and private sectors, including from SME (small to medium enterprises)s to large corporations, and expanding into CEO branding and recently spreading even to educational institutes, such as universities and colleges around the nation.
There are growing number of universities that are adapting to an ‘identity revision’ as they find it is a viable marketing medium and an excellent brand building tool. Given the recent trends, it is time for us to look deeper into what ‘branding’ really means and what association it has with the university identity system.
University Identity is a visual and a verbal expression of the foundation of the school. Identity supports, expresses, communicates, synthesizes, and visualizes the University. It helps to manage the perception of a school and differentiates it from its competitors (in this case, other Universities). The best brand identity system are memorable, authentic, meaningful, differentiated, sustainable, flexible, and add value.
Every university is founded on their own vision and mission statements, that are clearly defined and articulated. Then, how about their signature visuals? Does it represent the underlying visions as stated? And how does the receiver (in this case, the students) perceive the signature? In our research, we analyze the visual strategy of the university identity system in Korea. The keyquestions focus on providing abetterunder standing of how the receivers perceive of the university identity. In our study, we have conducted a survey of one hundred university students chosen randomly from Seoul.
