제너레이티브 디자인의 제품 디자인 프로세스 활용 연구 (A Study on The Practical Use of Generative Design in the Product Design Process)

초록

연구배경 클라우드 컴퓨터와 인공지능을 통해 다양한 디자인 옵션을 제안하는 제너레이티브 디자인은 제품 디자인 개발에 있어서 기업과 제품의 경쟁력을 향상시킬 수 있는 새로운 융합 프로세스의 대안으로 기대되고 있다. 하지만 현재의 제너레이티브 디자인은 CAD 소프트웨어의 기능요소 중 하나로써 특정 시점에서 단순한 결과를 얻어내기 위한 도구로만 사용되고 있기 때문에 다양한 결과물의 도출과 결과물을 활용할 수 있는 융합 프로세스로서의 체계적인 방안이 요구되고 있다.


연구방법 본 연구는 제너레이티브 디자인의 제품 디자인 프로세스 활용 방안을 도출하기 위해 문헌 연구와 사례조사 그리고 전문가 심층 인터뷰 방법으로 진행되었다. 먼저 제품 디자인의 프로세스와 제너레이티브 디자인에 대해 이론을 고찰하여 일반적인 제품 디자인 프로세스의 활동과 제너레이티브 디자인을 이용한 제품 개발 사례를 통해 활용 방안의 시사점을 도출하였다. 다음으로는 제품 디자인 관련 전문가를 대상으로 제너레이티브 디자인의 제품 디자인 활용 방안 및 가능성에 대해 심층 인터뷰를 진행하고 이를 통해 도출된 인사이트를 중심으로 일반적인 제품 디자인 프로세스 각 단계에서의 활용 가능성을 검토해 보았다.


연구결과 제너레이티브 디자인은 위상·형상 최적화의 생성적 디자인을 넘어서 제품 디자인 프로세스의 전 주기에서 계획적으로 활용되며 디자이너의 창의적 조형 연구에 영감을 줄 수 있다는 가능성이 도출되었다. 변수와 옵션에 부합하는 구조와 형태를 얻는 본래의 기능으로도 활용할 수 있지만 향후 디자이너의 의도에 맞춰서 변수와 옵션을 설정하여 다양한 조형을 결과물로 도출하고 이를 디자인에 적용할 기회가 확대될 것으로 예측된다.


결론 제너레이티브 디자인을 활용한 제품 디자인 프로세스의 구축으로 디자이너는 상황과 목적에 따라 제너레이티브 디자인의 결과물을 제품의 구조 개선 뿐 아니라 창의적 조형 탐색의 아이디에이션을 위한 방법론으로도 활용함으로써 새로운 융·복합 프로세스로 활용할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

영어초록

Background Generative design, which presents various design options by using artificial intelligence (AI) software and the compute power of the cloud, is expected to be a new alternative method of a convergent process that can improve the design competitiveness of businesses and products in the product development stage. However, as an adjunct to CAD software, generative design is only being used as a means of obtaining a simple result and at certain points. Therefore, scientific measures to succeed as a convergent process, which can produce and use various outputs, are required.


Methods This study used documentary research and case study methods and carried out in-depth interviews with experts in order to figure out how to make good use of generative design in the product design development process. First, implications of the use of generative design were deduced by considering theories about product design and generative design and by researching actual product development cases, which used generative design and followed general product design process. Second, in-depth interviews with product design experts were conducted. Those interviews dealt with subjects, which are: ways and possibilities of using generative design in the product design process. How generative design can be used in each stage of the product design process was then studied by using comparative analysis.


Results According to the findings, it seems that generative design is more than just an umbrella encompassing topology and shape optimization and can inspire designers to study models creatively by being used deliberately in every stage of the product design process. Generative design can be used not only to create the structure and shape, which match variables and options as usual, but also to create various models by setting variables and options as designers intend. Furthermore, such models can be applied to design.


Conclusions With the establishment of the product design process using generative design, it can be expected that designers will be able to use outputs created using generative design to improve the structure of the product and to ideate and search for creative models depending on their circumstances and goals. Also, the product design processes using generative design are expected to be used as new convergent/composite processes.
