역사적 전경과 상상, 드라마적 장치 － 역사로맨스 드라마 ‘옷소매 붉은 끝동’의 스토리텔링을 중심으로 (Historical Panorama, Imagination and Dramatic Devices - Focusing on the storytelling of the historical romance drama, "The Red Sleeve")

초록

이 연구는 역사적 사실을 토대로 한 장르 소설의 드라마화에 있어서 어떠한 스토리텔링 방식을 사용하였는지 분석함으로써 역사드라마의 시청자 소구 장치와 요소를 밝히고 한국적인 소재의 확산 전략을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 강미강의 역사장르소설 ‘옷소매 붉은 끝동’ 1, 2권과 2021년 11월 12일부터 2022년 1월 1일 MBC TV에서 방영한 17부작 역사드라마 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>(정지인, 송연화 연출)의 정해리 대본집을 중심으로 스토리텔링을 분석하였다. 분석 방식은 쥬네트의 텍스트 교류성 이론을 중심으로 하여 하이포텍스트인 소설과 하이퍼텍스트인 드라마 대본집, 그리고 작가후기, 작가의 말 등 부속텍스트를 포함하였다.
연구 결과 드라마 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 실제 역사적 시기인 1764년부터 1800년을 배경으로 삼고 이야기를 전개함으로써 역사적 사실성을 확보하고 역사적 증거로서의 역사를 재현하여 특정한 사건과 장소를 의미화하는 전략을 구사하였다. 또한, 고어와 현대어를 혼용함으로써 과거와 현대를 병치해 시청자가 과거의 인물에게 감정이입하게 하였으며, 실제 있었던 역사적 사실을 재구성한 역사장르소설을 토대로 등장인물과 역사적 사건을 상상적으로 엮으며 감성과 감각을 자극하는 스펙터클한 영상 언어로 풀어내고 있었다. 더불어 <옷소매 붉은 끝동>은 역사 속 사건과 소품을 소재로 갈등과 위기를 구성해 서사를 지연시키면서 주인공인 덕임과 산이 사랑을 확인하고 로맨스를 이루는데 기여하고 있었다. 특히 영‧정조 시대를 다루기는 하지만, 역사의 뒤란에 갇혀 있던 궁녀 덕임의 관점에서 그 시대를 바라보고, 덕임을 중심으로 서사가 전개된다는 점에서 기존 콘텐츠와 차별성을 지니게 하였다. 실존 인물인 성덕임에 관한 빈약한 기록을 토대로 비어있는 역사의 틈에 상상력을 발휘하여 그녀를 지엄한 영‧정조 시대의 한계를 뛰어넘는 독립적인 여성으로 표현하였으며, 이는 현재를 살아가는 사람들에게 역사를 새롭게 인식하고 재해석하는 동력으로 작용하고 있었다. 향후 스토리텔링을 중심으로 한 역사드라마의 장르적 특성에 초점을 맞추어 K-콘텐츠로서의 역사드라마의 정체성과 중요성을 부각하는 심도 있는 논의가 이루어지길 기대한다.

영어초록

This study analyzed what kind of storytelling method was used to produce genre novels based on historical facts into dramas. With this, the research tried to figure out the audience appeal devices and elements of historical dramas and a strategy for spreading Korean material. To this end, the storytelling of Kang Mikang's historical novel 'The Red Sleeve' and Jeong Hae-ri's script book of 17-episode historical drama <The Red Sleeve>(directed by Jung Ji-In and Song Yeon-Wha) were analyzed. The analysis method included the hypotextuality and the hypertextuality of the novel and drama script book, focusing on Genette's transtextuality theory, including paratextuality such as author reviews and author's words.
<The Red Sleeve> was set in the actual historical period of 1764 to 1800 and through this, it reproduced history as historical evidence and used the strategy of meaning specific events and places. In addition, by mixing ancient and modern languages, the past and the present were juxtaposed, allowing viewers to empathize with the characters of the past. Based on a historical genre novel reconstructed and verified historical facts, this drama imaginatively weaves characters and historical events, and expresses them in the spectacular visual language that stimulates viewers' emotions and senses. In addition, <The Red Sleeve> contributes to the romance and confirmation of love between the main characters Deok-im and San while delaying the narrative by composing conflicts and crises based on historical events and props. In particular, although it deals with Yeongjo and Jeongjo, it is differentiated from the existing contents in that the narrative develops centered on virtue by looking at the era from the perspective of the court lady, Deok-im, hidden in the history. Based on the meager record of her real-life character, Seong-deok-im used her imagination in the void of history to express herself as an independent woman who transcended the limits of the majestic Yeongjo and Jeongjo eras. It was acting as a driving force for people to recognize and reinterpret history anew. In the future, it is expected that an in-depth discussion will take place highlighting the identity and importance of historical dramas as K-contents, focusing on the genre characteristics of historical dramas centered on storytelling.
