「붉은 산」의 번역전략 분석: 언어 및 문화적 측면을 중심으로 (The Analysis on the Translation Strategy of English Translation of “Bulkeun San (the Red Hill)” : Focusing on Linguistic and Cultural fields)

초록

본고에서는 김동인의 ‘붉은 산’의 영어 번역물 두 편을 분석해서 두 번역물이 지향하고 있는 번역방식을 도출해 보았다. 이 연구의 목적은 번역물의 번역방식을 구체적으로 분석함으로써 두 번역자가 적용한 번역전략을 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 미래의 문학 번역에 적절한 번역 방식을 제시하려는데 있다. 구체적으로 원문에의 충실성 여부, 배경어 번역의 문제, 은유 표현, 통사적 변이, 일반화의 현상 등에 대한 번역방식을 제시하였다. 분석 대상 번역물은 홍명희가 번역하고 1975년 출판된 ‘Bare Hills -a doctor’s memoir-’와 Skillend, W.E.가 번역하고, 1980년에 출판된 ‘The Red Hills: A Doctor‘s Diary’이다.
자료 분석 방식은 귀납적인 접근 방식을 적용했다. 미리 분석의 근거를 만들지 않고, 우선 각각의 번역물이 갖고 있는 번역 방식을 원문과 비교하면서 기술적인 방식으로 서술한 다음 두 번역물이 보여주는 공통적인 특성을 찾아서 분석의 대상을 선정하였다. 형식의 문제에서는 문단의 배열 방식을 분석 대상으로 삼았으며, 내용에서는 이 작품의 배경을 이루는 여러 표현들의 번역 방식에 초점을 맞추었다. 내용은 문화적 요인과 언어적 요인으로 구분하였다. 문화적 요인으로는 작품의 뼈대를 이루는 주요 표현, 작품의 배경을 이루는 표현으로 구분하였으며, 언어적 요인으로는 원천 언어의 고유표현, 저자의 의도 전달, 작품 맥락의 의미 전달 등으로 분류하였다. 이런 분석을 거쳐서 각각의 항목에서 번역자가 사용한 번역전략을 도출하였다. 그 결과 TT1은 원문 위주의 직역을 하면서도 번역물 독자와의 소통을 위해서 고심한 흔적을 곳곳에서 드러낸다. 반면에 TT2는 독자와의 소통을 위해서 자국화의 전략, 상위어의 사용을 보여준다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the two English translations of “Bulkeun San: Uneu Uisaui Hoesang” and deducts the translation norms the translators have adopted. The TT1, which was published in 1975, was titled “Bare Hills - a doctor’s memoir-”, and was translated by Hong, Myunghee. The TT2, which was published in 1980, was titled “The Red Hills: A Doctor’s Diary” and was translated by Skillend, W.E. The data is categorized based on whether it is a cultural factor or a linguistic one. The analysis is performed using a deductive method. In other words, the ground of the analysis is not prepared in advance. First of all, the strategies of each translation are recorded in descriptive way through a comparison to the source text, then the common features of the two target texts are examined and the fields for analysis are decided.
In terms of form, the analysis focuses on the arrangement of paragraphs while in terms of contents, it focuses on the background of the source text. As for the content analysis, the cultural and linguistic elements of the target texts are identified. Then the cultural elements are further divided into major expressions of the work, and expressions of background knowledge. The linguistic elements are divided into the typical expressions of source language, delivery of the author’s intention, and delivery of the contextual meaning. Through such categorization, the strategies which the two translators have adopted are examined.
As the result, it is clear that TT1 concentrates its effort to communicate with target readers while TT2 adopts delicate translation focusing on the transfer of the message.
The aim of the study is to look at the translators’ strategy for getting norms and suggest a desirable translation method based on the findings. The result will draw translational implication for Korean literary translation into English with detailed discussions on whether the translation is faithful to the source text or not, background translation issues, metaphor expressions, syntactic shift and the phenomenon of generalization.
