유·불·선(儒佛仙) 삼교(三敎)의 주체적 수용을 통한 원불교 개체성 확립을 위한 소고 (A Study on the Notion of Individuality in Won-Buddhism in Relation to the Subjective Acceptance of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism)

초록

이 글은 원불교 교학이 타 종교의 개념이나 이론적 틀을 이용하여 원불교의 핵심개념을 이해하고자 할 때, 원불교 교학의 고유한 개체성을 훼손할 여지가 있다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 원불교는 그 핵심 개념과 교리를 우선 교학의 체계 내에서 생성하고, 소화하고, 양성하면서 이를 이해할 때만이 그 온전한 개체성이 인정될 수 있기 때문이다. 필자는 이러한 문제의식에 근거하여 먼저 원불교가 온전한 개체로서 창시되어 기성의 다른 종교적 교지들의 모범이 되고자 하는 소태산 박중빈 대종사(1891-1943)의 의지를 교법의 총설( 『정전』제1 「총서편」제2장)을 통해 확인하고 일원상 법어『( 정전』제2「 교의편」제1장 제5절)의 이해를 통해 원불교의 유불선 삼교의 주체적 수용의 주체를 확인하고자 하였다.
소태산은 교법의 총설에서 세계의 모든 종교가 그 근본되는 원리가 하나인 것을 간과하여 각종각파로 분립하고 교문을 별립하여 제도와 방편을 달리함으로써 교파들 사이에 융통을 보지 못하고 있다고 지적하였다. 그는 모든 종교의 근본원리를‘심인(心印)’으로 깨달아 이를 ‘일원(一圓)’이라 형상화하면서 일원에 기반하여 기존의 종교들을 원융회통하는 원불교의 교학을 수립하였다. 그는 모든 종교의 근본원리를 심인으로 파악했으며 심인은 곧‘제불제성’의 근원이다. 근원적 진리인 일원은 역사의 흐름 속에서 깨달음의 선각자와 그들의 가르침 즉, 제불제성을 매개체로 구체화 된다. 심인의 자기분열의 기능은‘공적영지(空寂靈知)’를 통해 이해될 수 있다. 심인은 내적으로 상호연관 되어 있는 유·불·선 삼교간의 역사를 형성하면서 동시에 종교 역사 서술 주체의 역할을 한다. 따라서 심인을 근거로 삼교가 상호작용하여 종교의 역사를 형성한다는 소태산의 통찰은 매우 중요한 통찰이라 할 있다. 그는 이러한 통찰에 근거하여 삼교를 일원으로 통합하고자 한다. 따라서 원불교의 일원은 삼교의 교지를 포괄하면서 동시에 과거종교와 구분해주는 원불교 개체성을 의미한다.

영어초록

The Founding Master of Won-Buddhism in Korea, Pak Chungbin(朴重彬, 1891-1943), discerned that Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism do present a common history of religious philosophy by displaying their reciprocal inner conflicts. According to Pak, this would result from the fact that“ the mind seal (心印, Xin Yin) [is] the original source of all the buddhas and sages, the original nature of all sentient beings”. The “mind-seal”thus highlights a tradition within Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism consisting in the manifestation, i.e. the individualization, of the “mind-seal”. For a better comprehension of the individualization of the mind seal, one first has to understand what function the“ mind-seal”has. Pak stated that“ the mind-seal serves as a light in the void for pursuing the calm, numinous awareness (空寂靈知, Kong Ji Ling Zhi)”. This aspect is common to both Western and Eastern philosophy, but Hegel oversaw it in his swift analysis of the so-called“ Oriental philosophy”. Both Eastern and Western philosophy tend towards achieving the aim of self-awareness. However, the religious philosophy from East Asia intends to attain this target by using another terminology, i.e.“ the void and calm, numinous awareness”(空寂靈知, Kong Ji Ling Zhi). This encompasses the main philosophical topics such as the relation between the Mind (心) and Qi (氣) or the relation between freedom and nature.
I therefore contend in this article that the history of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism and their reciprocal inner conflicts do strive for attaining the goal of self-awareness and that Korean Won-Buddhism contributed vastly to this endeavor by synthesizing Buddhist, Confucianist and Taoist concepts. This article intends to analyze the problem of interpretation of the individuality of Won-Buddhism in relation to other religions that may only be situated within the scientific system of Won-Buddhism by an external and conceptual way of comparison. The Founding Master of Won-Buddhism synthesized three different religions into one Il-Won (一圓, Yi Yuan). By using this method of synthesization, is becomes impossible to depict Won-Buddhism from a reductionist point of view as a transient religious theory or practice. Finally, I contend that reducing Won-Buddhism to the old, preceding religions is opposed to the central idea of synthesization.
