초록

통신사행록에 기록된 大坂은 豊臣秀吉의 도시였다. 그래서 大坂이라는 도시에 대해 적개심을 드러내며 그 발전상을 외면하려는 모습이 그들이 남긴 사행록 곳곳에 등장하고 있다. 그러나 정작 大坂에 도착한 통신사는 大坂 하구에 빽빽하게 들어찬 상선과 수많은 인구에 놀라움과 당혹감을 느꼈다. 그리고 그 모습을 통해 大坂이 일본 물류와 교통의 중심지라는 사실을 깨달을 수 있었다. 또한 大坂의 문인들을 만난 통신사는 일본의 학문이 성장하고 있음을 실감하게 되었다. 한편 통신사는 상업과 교역의 중심 도시 大坂에서 학문이 성장하고 있다는 사실에서 경제력이 학문의 발전과 밀접한 관련이 있다는 사실을, 또 일본 문인과의 교유를 통해 華夷의 구분이 무의미함을 깨닫게 되었다. 결국 大坂에서의 다양한 체험은 조선후기 통신사의 인식을 전환시키는 자극제로 작용하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to explore how ‘the impossibility of love’ is revealed in metaphorical structures of poems in the 1950s, through the poems of Bonggun Jeon and Byunghwa Cho. Jeon existentially likens love, an abstract experience, through a physical combination with a woman‘s body. His poem takes an oppositional metaphorical structure, ’darkness against love.‘ ’Darkness‘ is a point where the impossibility of love is expressed. The structure of ‘darkness against love’ becomes a foundation which enables to actively affirm love, lacking otherness. The subject of love that Jeon offered, accomplishing a perfect sexual union, was a rational human being who creates and proves meaning, and can see through the modernity. This was the appearance of the modern man whom Jeon aspired. In the 1950s, Jeon tried to redefine the problem of corrupt sex and love to the problem of mentality and willingness. He tried to go beyond the impossibility of love, by pursuing eternity of love that transcends time. The poems of Byunghwa Cho directly faced the impossibility of love through the metaphorical structure of spatial dynamics. In his poems, subjects and objects intersect spatially, and possess the common senses of the intersection. Through this, ‘you’ and ‘I’ share the same existing method. “Love for self‘, becoming the way to understand love for others and the era, is a main trait of Byunghwa Cho’s poem. Cho viewed that a man walking ‘alone’ amid a competitive modern civilization, as being a common man of modern times. He suggests to endure ‘without hope’. Fully understanding the impossibility of love is to endure the pain of modern civilization. He attempted to embrace the impossibility of love, by not running away from ideas, but enduring modern civilization. The two poets pondered about the modern man‘s attitude while living amid modern civilization, when love was impossible. This was the poem in the 1950s that sought for modernity, humanism, and ethics for the Universal human beings.
