영화에 대한 (불)가능성으로서의 지표성 다시 읽기: 앙드레 바쟁의 논의를 중심으로 (Rereading of Indexicality as the (Im)possibility for Cinema ：Focusing on Andre Bazin’s Theory)

초록

매체특정성의 종말로 특징지을 수 있는 포스트미디엄 시대에 영화이론의 주된 흐름은 경험적인 연구 프로그램에 매달리는 것이었다. 따라서 변화의 양상에 따른 새로운 개념화와 재정립을 둘러싼 논의가 이어졌으며, 이는 영화의 존재론적 변화에 따른 지표성(indexicality)의 위기와 새로운 감각형식의 출현에 대한 주목으로 이어졌다.
본 논고는 여기서 영화를 자율적 실천으로 사고할 수 없게 만드는 지표성의 문제를 돌아본다. 이는 사회를 가능한 동시에 불가능하게 만든다는 측면에서 정치의 지위와 동일한 문제라 할 수 있다. 지표성은 영화에서 세계가 재현되기 이전에 이미 거기에 있다는 것을 증거한다. 하지만 그것은 현실의 이미지와 영화적 이미지 사이의 비대칭적 관계를 드러내는 기제가 되기도 한다. 이를 살펴보기 위해서 『자본』에서 맑스가 전개한 물신주의(fetishism) 이론에서 출발할 것이다. 물신주의 이론은 현실이란 외양이 곧 환영을 통해서만 가능하다는 것을 보여준다. 현실을 지탱하는 것은 분명 초감각적인 요소지만, 그것은 우리가 반성하기 시작했을 때 이미 보이지 않는다. 슬라보예 지젝(Slavoj Žižek)이 봉합(suture) 개념을 새롭게 끌어오며 봉합의 선험론적 불가능성을 이야기한 것 역시 이와 공명하는 것이다.
이러한 관점에서 본고는 환영에 준거할 수밖에 없는 영화적 이미지의 현실 효과가 지닌 존재론적 특성을 살펴본다. 그에 따라 비롯되는 지시대상과 지시된 것의 관계를 검토하기 위해 주관적이며 동시에 객관적이라 할 독특한 현실 개념을 제시하는 앙드레 바쟁(Andre Bazin)의 논의를 살펴볼 것이다. 바쟁의 지표성에 있어 선험적으로 활동하는 것은 주관적 강박관념이다. 그것은 환영을 통해 구성된 현실적 이미지와 영화적 이미지 사이를 조절한다. 동시에 지표성은 여기서 하나의 구조로서 영화가 자기 스스로를 완전히 가능하지 못하게 만드는 조건이기도 하다. 카메라에 밀려들어오는 세계와 그로부터 온전한 구조로 구성되어야 하는 영화 사이의 관계는 모순적 관계라 할 수 있다. 그리고 그 사이에서 만들어지는 모순의 흔적은 지시된 것과 지시대상 사이의 불일치를 드러낸다. 이는 지표성이 사라졌다고 여겨지는 디지털 시대에도 여전히 ‘증거적 리얼리즘’이라는 방식으로 기능하고 있다.
이러한 현실과 영화 사이의 만남에서 발생하는 효과를 통해 그 모순적 관계를 감각하게 하는 것이야말로 우리 시대 영화로부터 얻을 수 있는 정치적 상상력을 이루는 토대일 것이다.

영어초록

In the age of post-medium of which characteristic could be the termination of medium specificity, the main stream of cinematic theories cannot but cling to empirical research programs. As a result, discussions around changing modality- oriented new conceptualization and redefinition have continued, and people have come to pay attention to the cinematic ontological change-oriented crisis of indexicality and the appearance of new form of sense.
This study looked into the issue of indexicality that making impossible to think cinema with self-regulating practice. This issue seems to be identical with the status of politics from the aspect that it makes society possible as well as impossible simultaneously. Indexicality testifies that this issue already exists there even before the world is reproduced in cinema. However, it is also a mechanism that exposes asymmetric relationship between real images and cinematic images. In order to examine this issue, this study first looked into the theory of fetishism developed by Karl Marx in his Capital. The theory of fetishism clarifies the fact that the outward appearance of reality is only possible with hallucination. The thing that sustains reality is definitely supersensual factors, but it is already invisible when we begin to reflect them. This phenomenon is in line with Slavoj Žižek’s transcendental impossibility of suture, introduced in his discussion of a new concept of suture.
In this regard, this study examined the ontological characteristics of cinematic image’s real effects that could not but be based upon hallucination. In addition, in order to look into its relationship with ensued things, this study focused on the theory of Andre Bazin who presented unique conception of reality that could be viewed as subjective as well as objective. The thing that is transcendentally active in Andre Bazin’s indexicality is a subjective obsession. It controls the relationship between hallucination-based real images and cinematic images. In addition, it is a precondition that makes cinema become a structure that is impossible to play a complete function for itself. Therefore, the relationship between the world flooded into a camera and the cinema that must be composed as a complete structure through the world seems to be contradictory. And the trace of contradiction generated here reveals the disparity between the object actually indicated and the object have to be indicated. This phenomenon still exerts its function even in the age of digital in which indexicality is regarded as disappeared.
Making people sense this contradictory relationship through the effects generated from the encounter of this reality with cinema seems to be the very base of political imaginations that can be obtained from cinema in our times.
