변증법적 종합의 (불)가능성 – 김훈의 『남한산성』을 중심으로 (The (Im)Possibility of Dialectical Synthesis - Focusing on Kim Hoon’s Namhansanseong)

초록

이 글은 소설 『남한산성』에 드러나는 변증법적 구도를 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 소설에는 변증법적 발전이 사회적·역사적으로 가능한지, 가능하다면 그것은 어떤 방식이어야 할지에 대한 질문이 담겨 있다. 그리고 이 질문에 대한 답변은 텍스트에서 변증법적 구도를 동반한 내용이 반복, 재현되면서 이루어진다.
『남한산성』에서 두드러지는 것은 변증법적 종합에 이르지 못하는 내용 없는 말들, 독백적인 목소리들 간의 대립 그 자체이다. 이러한 양상이 압도적으로 표현됨으로써 『남한산성』은 변증법적 발전에 대한 회의 내지는 비판을 담고 있는 텍스트로 읽히기도 한다. 그렇지만 이것이 소설의 전부는 아니다. 이 소설에서는 ‘조선-묘당-내부’와 ‘청-오랑캐-외부’가 대립한다는 사실적 차원을 넘어 ‘내부’에 ‘외부’의 시선이 적극적으로 개입해 들어온다. 그럼으로써 ‘내부’를 반성적으로 사유케 하는 텍스트 차원의 담화적 장치가 가동된다.
『남한산성』에서는 텍스트의 또 다른 ‘외부’를 통해 조금 더 적극적인 차원에서의 변증법적 발전 가능성이 모색되기도 한다. 그것은 서날쇠라는 창조적 장인의 노동 행위와 그가 맺는 긍정적 관계를 통해 이루어진다. 그러나 가능성과 함께 그가 지니는 한계 역시 분명하다. 이는 서날쇠가 특이하고 고립된 인물로 형상화되고 있다는 점, 무엇보다 그가 펼쳐나가는 가능성을 담기에 그에 관한 텍스트에서의 비중이 그리 크지 않다는 점과 관련된다.
『남한산성』에 드러나는 변증법의 의미를 텍스트의 구도에 주목하여 독해하는 것은 우선 소설 텍스트 자체의 의미를 풍부하게 하면서 해석의 지평을 넓힌다는 데 의의가 있을 것이다. 나아가 소설에 드러나는 변증법적 발전의 가능성을 살피는 것은 기존의 고착화된 현실을 넘어 어떤 식의 세계를 생성할 수 있을지를, 텍스트에 기대어 상상해 본다는 의의도 지닐 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to understand the dialectical structure revealed in the novel Namhansanseong. This novel contains questions about whether dialectical development is socially and historically possible and, if so, what method it should take. And the answer to this question is achieved by repeating and reproducing the content accompanying the dialectical structure in the text.
What stands out in Namhansanseong is the conflict itself between contentless words and monological voices that do not reach dialectical synthesis. As these aspects are overwhelmingly expressed, Namhansanseong can be read as a text containing skepticism or criticism about dialectical development. But this is not all of the novel. In this novel, beyond the factual dimension of the conflict between ‘Joseon-Myodang-internal’ and ‘Qing-Barbarian-external’, the gaze of the ‘external’ actively intervenes in the ‘internal’. As a result, a discursive device at the text level that enables reflective thinking of the ‘internal’ is activated.
In Namhansanseong, the possibility of dialectical development at a more active level is explored through another ‘external’ of the text. This is achieved through the labor activities of a creative craftsman named Seo Nalsoe and the positive relationship he forms. However, along with his potential, his limitations are also clear. This is related to the fact that Seo Nalsoe is portrayed as a unique and isolated figure, and above all, the importance of him in the text is not that large to contain his unfolding possibilities.
Reading the meaning of dialectics revealed in Namhansanseong by paying attention to the structure of the text will be meaningful in that it enriches the meaning of the novel text itself and broadens the horizon of interpretation. Furthermore, examining the possibility of dialectical development revealed in the novel will also have the meaning of relying on the text to imagine what kind of world could be created beyond the existing fixed reality.
