한국불교사 기술의 사관과 주체 - 서술의 특징과 사관을 중심으로 - (Historical View and its Subject in Describing the History of Korean Buddhism)

초록

한국불교사는 한국의 역사 속에 불교라는 한 부분의 역사이다. 한국에 불교가 전래된 역사가 오래됨에도 불구하고 1,700년의 불교사를 서술한 통사는 그리 많지 않다. 그 가운데 대표적인 사서로 권상로의『조선불교약사』, 이능화의『조선불교통사』, 우정상·김영태의 공저인 『한국불교사』, 김영태의 『한국불교사』등을 검토하였다.
권상로의『조선불교약사』는 최초로 국한문 혼용체로 쓰여진 한국불교사이다. 그렇지만 삼국시대 서술에 있어 지나치게 신라 중심으로 서술되었다는 점과 중요한 역사적 사실을 간과하였다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이 책은 보수적인 관점에서 사실 기술에 충실하면서 저자의 평가는 유보하는 모습을 보이고 있다.
이능화의 『조선불교통사』는 오랜 세월의 준비기간을 거친 방대한 자료집적 성격을 띤 계몽주의 역사서이다. 첫째, 우리 문화에 대한 강한 애착에서 오는 민족주의적 시각을 엿볼 수 있다. 둘째, 서술하는 나라의 연호를 맨 앞에 기술하고 맨 끝에 중국 연호를 언급한 점에서 자존의식이 강하였음을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 기술한 역사적 사실이 수록된 전거를 밝혔다는 점에서 실증주의적 관점을 볼 수 있다. 넷째, 사회진화론을 수용하여 민족주의 관점에서 역사를 서술하였다. 다섯째, 서술시기를 이 땅에 불교가 전래된 고대부터 『조선불교통사』가 발간되기 2년 전인 1916년까지 방대한 사료를 집대성함으로써 자료집으로서의 성격을 띠고 있다. 여섯째, 중요한 역사적 사실에 ‘상현왈’이라는 논찬을 실어 자신의 견해를 밝혔는데 그 가운데 많은 내용이 민족문화의 우수성을 계도하는 계몽주의적 사서이다. 일곱째, 사실의 인과관계를 해명하려 하였다는 점에서 과학적인 서술방법을 택하였다. 이능화는 과학적인 역사서술 태도를 지향하면서도 신비주의적인 요소를 버리지 않고 수록함으로써 후세의 평가를 기다리는 여유로움을 보여주고 있다.
우정상·김영태의 공저인 『한국불교사』는 지금까지 연대순으로 역사를 기록한 편년체 방식에서 탈피하여 분류사 형식을 취하였다. 이 책은 대한불교조계종 종립대학인 동국대학교에서 한국불교사 강의 교재로 저술되었기 때문에 한국불교사 서술에 표준이 되고자 하였다고 한다. 그런 까닭에 한국불교사의 시기구분을 시도하였고, 각 시기별 불교의 특성을 언급하였다. 뿐만 아니라 불교 미술과 음악까지도 언급하였고, 제도사와 법령 및 교육기관의 변천까지도 서술하고 불교계의 잡지까지도 소개하였다.
김영태의 『한국불교사』는 스승인 우정상과 함께 공저로 1969년에 발간한『한국불교사』를 28년간 숙성시킨 책이라고 하겠다. 이 책의 특징은 종래 역사학계의 시기구분을 그대로 수용하지 않고 불교사의 내용에 맞게 장과 절의 제목을 수정하였다는 점이다.
네 가지 한국불교 통사는 나름대로 각자의 장점과 단점을 가지고 있다. 다만 한 가지 공통적인 약점이 있다면 저자의 현실인식이 책 속에 잘 드러나지 않는다는 점이다. 이것은 이 불교사들이 출간되던 시대가 우리 역사의 시련기이기 때문에 오는 한계였다고 하겠다.

The history of Korean Buddhism is a part of Korean history focusing on Buddhism. Although Buddhism was accepted in Korea very long time ago, there is few historical publication thoroughly describing the 1,700 years of history of Korean Buddhism. I examined some of representative work such as Chosun Buddhism History Abstract by Sangroh Kwon, Chosun Buddhism Thorough History by Neunghwa Lee, History of Korean Buddhism co authored by Jeongsang Woo & Youngtae Kim, and History of Korean Buddhism by Youngtae Kim, etc.
Sangroh Kwon's Chosun Buddhism History Abstract is the first work on the history of Korean Buddhism written in both Korean and Chinese character. However, when describing the three-kingdom period, it was biased to the Shilla-centered perspective, and missed some important historical facts. This work is written in conservative style focused on describing facts while reserves the author's own evaluation.
Chosun Buddhism Thorough History by Neunghwa Lee is a type of Enlightenment history showing vast range of accumulated data via long period of preparation time. First, it expresses the nationalist perspective that was originated in the deep attachment to our culture. Second, it tries to express national autonomy by writing the year of the described country while locating the chinese year at the back. Third, it shows positivist perspective in terms of suggesting evidence and reference that originally documented the historical facts. Fourth, it accepts social Darwinism based on the nationalist perspective. Fifth, the author compiled the vast range of historical documents from the ancient time to the 2 year before the publication of itself, which shows its characteristic as a source book. Sixth, the author expresses his own opinion by adding 'Sanghyeonwal' on the important historical facts, and many of them tries to disseminate the superiority of our national culture in Enlightenment perspective. Seventh, it adopted a scientific description that tries to suggest causal relationship. Neunghwa Lee harmonized the scientific attitude toward history with its mystical components, as if he lets descendants evaluate it in their own way.
History of Korean Buddhism, coauthored by Jeongsam Woo and Youngtae Kim, dramatically escaped from the chronological form to the categorized historical writing. This book was written for the textbook used in University of Korean Buddhist Jogyejong, so the authors claimed and tried this book to be the standard of the history of Korean Buddhism. For this reason, they tried the categorization of periods, and mentioned each period's characteristics in Buddhism. Moreover, it is extended to Buddhist arts and music, described the institutional changes including policies or educational facilities, and also introduced the magazines and journals related to Buddhism.
History of Korean Buddhism written by Youngtae Kim is the result of what he tried for 28 years to develop the book of the same title which he coauthored with his teacher. The main characteristics of this book is that the author did not accept the conventional categorization of periods in historical studies, and tried to modify the names of chapters and sections in accordance with Buddhist understanding of history.
Each of four work I examined turned out to have its own pros and cons. However, the common weakness was that none of them clearly shows the author's understanding of their contemporary reality. I suggest that this represented the limitation from the sad history of our nation at the moment when these historical writings were published.
